Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back
I didn’t sleep.
Not after hearing that name.
My father.
The man who disappeared when I was twelve.
The man my mother told me had abandoned us.
The man I spent my entire life believing was selfish.
Gone.
Until now.
At six in the morning, I sat across from Martha at her kitchen table.
Neither of us touched our coffee.
“Tell me everything.””
She looked exhausted.
“I haven’t seen him in years.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your father came back after Leo was born.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“When?””
“About six months after.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Money.””
Of course.
Money.
The thing everyone seemed to use as an excuse.
“What did he want?””
“He wanted to reconnect.””
I laughed.
“After fifteen years?””
“He said he changed.””
“And you believed him?””
Martha didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“What did he do?””
She whispered:
“He met Sarah.””
The room went silent.
I found Sarah sitting on the balcony with Leo that afternoon.
The sun was setting behind the buildings.
For a moment, everything looked peaceful.
Then I remembered my life had never been as simple as it looked.
“Sarah.””
She turned.
“What happened?””
I sat down beside her.
“My father came back.””
Her expression changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know him.””
She looked away.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How?””
Sarah took a breath.
“He found me after I left.””
The world seemed to stop.
“What?””
“He knew where I was.””
“When?””
“Three days after I moved.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked at me sadly.
“Because I tried.””
I felt sick.
“Explain.””
Sarah looked at Leo.
Then lowered her voice.
“He told me you knew the truth.””
“What truth?””
“He said you didn’t want me back.””
My hands went cold.
“He said that?””
Sarah nodded.
“He said your mother was trying to protect you from me.””
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Another person pulling strings.
“What else?””
Sarah hesitated.
“He offered me money.””
My jaw tightened.
“How much?””
“Enough to disappear.””
I stood.
“He tried to buy my son.””
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
“He wasn’t just trying to buy me.””
“What?””
“He was trying to buy Leo.””
I found my father’s name in an old file from Michael’s office.
Richard Hayes.
The man who left us.
The man who came back.
The man who somehow appeared every time my life changed.
Michael looked through the records.
“Your father owns several businesses.””
“I didn’t know that.””
“He kept a low profile.””
“Why?””
Michael looked at me.
“Maybe because he had something to hide.””
I stared at the documents.
Then I saw something.
A transfer.
A payment.
A large amount of money sent two years ago.
Recipient:
Elena’s former law firm.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Michael leaned closer.
“That’s interesting.””
“Interesting?””
“Your father paid a legal firm connected to Elena.””
The room went quiet.
“No.””
Michael looked at me.
“You know something?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know anything anymore.””
That evening, Elena called.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
“Why did my father pay your lawyer?””
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
“You found out.””
My stomach dropped.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know who he was at first.””
“At first?””
She started crying.
“Daniel, I need you to understand.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“I need you to explain.””
She took a breath.
“Your father approached me before we met.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why?””
“He wanted information.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because he wanted to come back into your life.””
I felt something break inside me.
“How long?””
“Daniel—”
“How long have you known my father?””
“Two years.””
The same two years.
The same time everything changed.
I walked outside because I suddenly couldn’t breathe.
“So my mother manipulated me.””
“Yes.””
“Sarah was threatened.””
“Yes.””
“You helped my father.””
Elena cried.
“I didn’t know what he was planning.””
“But you knew enough.””
She didn’t answer.
The next day, I went to see Richard Hayes.
I found him at a private office downtown.
A place filled with glass walls and expensive furniture.
He looked exactly like the pictures I barely remembered.
Older.
Gray hair.
Same eyes.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Daniel.””
I hated that he knew my name.
I hated that he sounded like a father.
“You have some nerve.””
He stood.
“I know you’re angry.””
“You have no idea.””
He sighed.
“I made mistakes.””
“You abandoned me.””
“I was young.””
“You were my father.””
The smile disappeared.
“I came back.””
“After fifteen years.””
“I wanted another chance.””
I stepped closer.
“Did that chance involve destroying my family?””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked toward the window.
“Your mother always had control over you.””
“And you thought you could take it?””
“No.””
He turned.
“I thought I could save you.””
I laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Your mother made you weak.””
I stared at him.
There it was.
The same belief.
The same obsession.
Everyone wanted to be the person who rescued me.
Nobody cared that I never asked to be saved.
Before I left, Richard said:
“Ask your mother why she never told you what happened the night I left.””
I stopped.
“What?””
May you like
His expression hardened.
“Because she wasn’t the victim either.””
