Chapter 9: The Man Beneath the Mansion

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the voice coming from the basement belonged to a man who was supposed to be gone forever.

Edward Whitmore.

Margaret stood frozen in the middle of the library.

The letter in her hand trembled slightly.

For twenty years, she had imagined this moment.

She had imagined finding answers.

She had imagined discovering where Edward went.

She had imagined hearing his voice again.

But she never imagined hearing it after discovering a room full of people who had betrayed her.

“Edward?”” she whispered.

The intercom remained silent.

Then the voice returned.

“Margaret, if you can hear me, you need to leave the room.””

Thomas looked toward the basement door.

“Dad?””

His voice cracked.

“Dad, are you down there?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Thomas.””

The young man covered his mouth.

It was him.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

His father had said his name.

Richard stepped backward.

For the first time, real fear appeared on his face.

“No.””

Margaret noticed.

“You knew.””

Richard looked at her.

“No.””

“You knew Edward was alive.””

Richard shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

But his eyes told a different story.

Victor noticed too.

And suddenly, the balance of power changed.

Because Richard was no longer the person with all the answers.

He was someone who had just discovered he had missed something.

Margaret turned toward the basement.

“Open the door.””

Nobody moved.

Rachel looked nervous.

“Margaret…”

“Open it.””

Her voice was quiet.

But nobody dared argue.

Thomas walked toward the basement entrance.

The old lock was covered in dust.

A symbol had been carved into the wood.

The Whitmore family crest.

Thomas touched it.

“My father sealed this.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how is he speaking?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas entered the code on the old keypad beside the door.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Richard said nothing.

“Why, Richard?””

He looked away.

And that was enough.

Margaret stepped closer.

“You knew this door existed.””

Richard’s silence confirmed it.

Thomas looked disgusted.

“You knew my father was here?””

Richard finally looked at him.

“I knew he had something hidden.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“I thought he was dead.””

Margaret stared.

“Then why are you afraid?””

Richard had no answer.

The basement door finally opened.

Not because of the keypad.

Because the mechanism had been unlocked from inside.

The heavy wooden door slowly moved.

Cold air rushed upward.

A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.

Nobody wanted to go first.

Until Margaret stepped forward.

Thomas immediately followed.

“Margaret, wait.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I waited twenty years.””

And then she walked down.

The others followed.

Even Richard.

Even Rachel.

Even Victor.

Because everyone needed to know what was waiting below.

The basement was not like the rest of the mansion.

It was not abandoned.

It was a hidden office.

A secret command center.

Computers.

Files.

Security monitors.

Thousands of documents.

Edward had been watching everything.

Margaret stopped.

On one wall were photographs.

Of the family.

Of the company.

Of every person involved.

Thomas stared.

“He knew.””

Margaret walked closer.

“He knew everything.””

A monitor suddenly turned on.

Edward appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Everyone froze.

“Margaret.””

Her eyes filled instantly.

Even after everything.

Even after the lies.

Hearing his voice still broke through every wall she had built.

“If you are seeing this message, then I was unable to return.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Unable?””

The video continued.

“I need you to understand why I stayed hidden.””

Edward looked directly into the camera.

“Richard was not the only threat.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

His face changed.

Edward continued.

“The person helping him was someone I trusted completely.””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

The letter.

The warning.

Everything was coming together.

Edward continued.

“She had access to the house.””

A pause.

“She had access to my documents.””

Another pause.

“And she had access to Margaret.””

Rachel looked around nervously.

Victor stepped backward.

Richard looked confused.

Edward continued.

“I spent years trying to understand why the information kept reaching Richard.””

The screen flickered.

“I eventually discovered the truth.””

The video paused.

Then resumed.

“The person helping Richard was not doing it for money.””

Margaret frowned.

“Then why?””

Edward looked at the camera.

“Revenge.””

The word echoed.

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“Who?””

Edward continued.

“The person who destroyed this family was someone who believed they had been wronged.””

The screen went black.

Then a new video appeared.

A woman’s face.

Everyone froze.

Because it was someone they all knew.

Someone they had trusted.

Someone who had spent years inside the mansion.

Clara.

The housekeeper.

Thomas stared.

“No.””

Clara stepped backward.

“Margaret…”

Nobody looked at her.

They looked at the screen.

The video showed Clara younger.

Standing beside Richard.

Handing him documents.

Talking quietly.

The room went silent.

Rachel whispered:

“I knew it.””

Clara closed her eyes.

Margaret slowly turned toward her.

“Explain.””

Clara looked at the floor.

For the first time in thirty-two years…

She looked like a stranger.

“I never wanted this.””

Thomas looked hurt.

“Then why?””

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Edward destroyed my family.””

Margaret stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Clara looked at her.

“My father worked for Whitmore Industries.””

A pause.

“He was blamed for a financial mistake.””

Thomas frowned.

“Your father?””

Clara nodded.

“Everyone believed he stole money.””

Margaret remembered.

A scandal.

A missing employee.

A case Edward had closed quickly.

Clara continued.

“He lost everything.””

Margaret whispered:

“Your father was Daniel Bennett.””

Clara looked surprised.

“You remember.””

“Yes.””

Margaret’s voice became quieter.

“He was innocent.””

Clara’s face changed.

“What?””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Edward knew.””

Silence.

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

“He told me.””

Clara looked confused.

“Then why didn’t he help?””

Margaret had no answer.

Because she did not know.

And that was the first time Clara saw uncertainty in Margaret.

Not because Margaret was weak.

Because the truth was bigger than anyone expected.

Victor suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You see?””

He looked around.

“This is why families are easy to destroy.””

Margaret stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

Victor smiled.

“Everyone has a reason.””

He looked at Clara.

“Everyone has pain.””

Then at Richard.

“Everyone has anger.””

Then at Rachel.

“Everyone has greed.””

Rachel looked away.

Victor continued.

“And everyone thinks they are the hero of their own story.””

Margaret looked at the monitors.

At the evidence.

At the lies.

At the people around her.

She finally understood.

This was never about one betrayal.

It was about decades of wounds left untreated.

But there was still one question.

She looked at Clara.

“If you helped Richard…”

Clara lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you save me?””

The room went silent.

Because that was the question nobody could answer.

Clara looked at Margaret.

“Because I realized I was wrong.””

A tear fell.

“I spent years blaming you for something Edward did.””

Margaret watched her.

“And when Rachel locked you away…”

Clara looked toward the floor.

“I saw the same cruelty that destroyed my father.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Edward’s video suddenly restarted.

Everyone turned.

A hidden file had opened.

A final message.

Edward appeared again.

But this time…

He was speaking directly to Clara.

“If you are watching this, Clara…”

Her face went pale.

Edward continued.

“I know what you did.””

Clara stopped breathing.

“But I also know why.””

Everyone listened.

Edward’s voice softened.

“You were hurt.””

A pause.

“But pain does not excuse betrayal.””

Clara closed her eyes.

Edward continued.

“However…”

The screen flickered.

“I also know the person who manipulated you.””

Margaret looked at Richard.

Edward’s voice became serious.

“Clara was not the beginning.””

A pause.

“She was only another victim.””

The basement went silent.

Then the final sentence appeared on the screen.

*THE TRUE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING IS STILL IN THIS MANSION.*

Everyone looked around.

At each other.

And then the basement door slammed shut.

Locked from the outside.

A shadow appeared behind the glass window.

Someone was standing there.

Watching.

Waiting.

And Margaret realized the worst truth of all.

They had finally found the hidden room.

May you like

But the person controlling the game…

Was still above them.
