Chapter 7: The Brother Who Returned From the Dead
The library door closed behind Richard Whitmore.
The sound was quiet.
But to Margaret, it felt like the entire mansion had just locked itself around them.
For twenty years, she had believed Richard was gone.
Dead.
A painful memory buried with the rest of the past.
But he was standing in front of her.
Older.
Colder.
And alive.
Thomas stared at the man who was supposed to exist only in old family photographs.
“I don’t understand.””
Richard smiled slightly.
“That has always been the problem with this family.””
He walked farther into the room.
“You believed what you were told.””
Margaret’s eyes remained fixed on him.
“You let us mourn you.””
Richard looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A strange silence filled the room.
Then Richard placed his cane against the table.
“Because dead men are underestimated.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“You abandoned everyone.””
Richard looked at him.
“No.””
His eyes moved across the room.
“I was abandoned first.””
Rachel watched carefully.
She had spent the entire day trying to control the situation.
But now she looked completely lost.
“Who are you really?””
Richard looked at her.
The question amused him.
“I’m the man who should have owned Whitmore Industries.””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“Still protecting the illusion.””
“You were never meant to own it.””
“Why?””
“Because Edward built it.””
Richard laughed.
“And there it is.””
He pointed at her.
“The same sentence you always used.””
Margaret didn’t move.
“Because it was true.””
Richard’s smile faded.
“Truth depends on who controls the story.””
Thomas looked between them.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Richard turned toward him.
“You want to know why your father disappeared?””
Thomas froze.
“Yes.””
“Ask Margaret.””
Everyone looked at her.
Margaret’s face changed.
Not fear.
Pain.
Because there was a part of the past she had never spoken about.
A part she thought was gone forever.
“Richard was Edward’s older brother,” Margaret said.
Thomas listened carefully.
“They built Whitmore Industries together.””
Richard nodded.
“Finally.””
Margaret continued.
“Then Richard started making decisions without Edward’s approval.””
“Because Edward was afraid to take risks,” Richard interrupted.
“Because you were reckless.””
Richard laughed.
“There.””
He looked at Thomas.
“That’s what she told everyone.””
Margaret ignored him.
“Richard wanted control of the company.””
“And I deserved it.””
“No.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“I created half of what this family owns.””
Edward’s voice from the past suddenly echoed in Margaret’s mind.
The arguments.
The late nights.
The fear.
She remembered the night Richard left.
Or the night everyone thought he left.
“Richard,” she said quietly, “you weren’t forced out.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I was betrayed.””
Thomas looked confused.
“By who?””
Richard looked directly at Margaret.
The answer came without hesitation.
“Your stepmother.””
The room went silent.
Thomas turned.
“Margaret?””
She looked at Richard.
“You’re still lying.””
Richard smiled.
“Am I?””
Margaret’s hands tightened.
“Yes.””
Richard reached into his coat and removed a small folder.
He placed it on the table.
“I kept everything.””
Thomas looked down.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
Margaret did not touch it.
She knew better.
Richard had always been dangerous because he understood one thing.
People wanted simple answers.
A villain.
A hero.
A clear side to choose.
But real betrayal was never that easy.
“What proof?”” Thomas asked.
Richard opened the folder.
Inside were old financial records.
Letters.
Contracts.
Photographs.
“Edward and Margaret secretly transferred company ownership away from me.””
Thomas looked shocked.
Margaret stared at the documents.
“They’re fake.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s what you’ll say.””
“Because it’s true.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at one page.
“This signature…”
Margaret turned.
Rachel continued.
“I recognize it.””
Thomas frowned.
“Whose?””
Rachel looked at Margaret.
“Edward’s.””
The room went quiet.
Margaret took the document.
Her eyes scanned the page.
The signature looked real.
Too real.
Her stomach tightened.
Because she knew Edward’s handwriting.
And this was almost perfect.
Richard watched her reaction.
“You remember.””
Margaret looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
Richard leaned back.
“From Edward.””
Thomas looked shocked.
“My father gave you these?””
Richard nodded.
“Before he disappeared.””
Margaret stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Edward never trusted you.””
Richard smiled.
“Maybe he trusted me more than he trusted you.””
The words cut deeper than Margaret expected.
Because for a moment…
She wondered.
What if?
What if Edward had hidden something from her?
What if she had spent twenty years defending a man who had not told her everything?
Richard saw the doubt.
And he used it.
“You always believed you knew Edward completely.””
He stepped closer.
“But you didn’t.””
Margaret remained silent.
Thomas noticed.
“Margaret?””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Even Richard.
Because Margaret Whitmore admitting uncertainty was something nobody had ever seen.
Richard smiled.
“There she is.””
Margaret looked at him.
“What?””
“The woman beneath the confidence.””
Thomas immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Richard looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she’s still my family.””
Richard laughed.
“Family.””
He looked around.
“This mansion was built on that word.””
Rachel suddenly spoke.
“Then why are you here?””
Everyone looked at her.
Richard smiled.
“Good question.””
He turned toward her.
“You wanted control.””
Rachel said nothing.
“You betrayed Margaret.””
Her face tightened.
“You used me.””
Richard smiled.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked her.
Rachel looked furious.
“You admit it?””
“Of course.””
He walked toward her.
“You were never my partner.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with anger.
“You promised me the company.””
“I promised you exactly what you needed to hear.””
She stepped back.
“You’re insane.””
“No.””
Richard looked at Margaret.
“I’m patient.””
Margaret understood.
Everything.
Rachel.
Victor.
The documents.
The security footage.
It was all connected.
Richard had not rushed.
He had spent years building a trap.
A trap where everyone would destroy each other.
Margaret looked at Victor.
“And you?””
Victor remained silent.
Richard answered for him.
“Victor helped me recover what belonged to my family.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still don’t understand.””
She stepped closer.
“Your family?””
Her voice became sharper.
“You abandoned your family.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Only briefly.
But it was there.
Pain.
Then anger.
“You have no idea what I lost.””
“Neither do you.””
The room went still.
Richard stared at her.
Margaret continued.
“You lost your brother.””
A pause.
“You lost your place.””
Another pause.
“But you never lost your pride.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
Thomas watched the two of them.
For the first time, he realized this battle was much older than him.
He was not the beginning.
He was not even the center.
He was just another piece.
Then Clara suddenly spoke.
“Margaret.””
Everyone turned.
She was looking at the folder Richard had brought.
“There’s something wrong.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
Clara pointed.
“The paper.””
Margaret looked.
Clara stepped closer.
“I worked for this family for thirty-two years.””
She touched the document.
“I know the company records.””
Richard’s expression changed slightly.
“These pages…”
Margaret looked at her.
“What?””
Clara picked up one document.
“They’re old.””
“Yes.””
“But the ink isn’t.””
Silence.
Thomas moved closer.
“What does that mean?””
Clara looked at Richard.
“It means these documents were recreated recently.””
Richard’s face hardened.
For the first time…
He looked surprised.
Margaret saw it.
And she smiled.
Because Clara had found the crack.
The first crack.
Richard stepped forward.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Margaret.
“Someone wanted us to believe these were twenty years old.””
Margaret looked at Richard.
“And they aren’t.””
Victor suddenly moved.
Fast.
He reached for the folder.
But Thomas grabbed his arm.
Everyone reacted.
Victor pulled away.
And something fell from his coat.
A small device.
A recording device.
Margaret picked it up.
Her eyes narrowed.
“What is this?””
Richard said nothing.
Thomas looked at him.
“You recorded everything.””
Richard’s silence confirmed it.
Margaret held the device.
And then she noticed something.
A blinking red light.
Still active.
She pressed the button.
A voice came through.
Not Richard.
Not Victor.
Edward.
Twenty years younger.
And terrified.
“If you are hearing this…”
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“…then I failed.””
Margaret’s face went pale.
Because after twenty years…
She was finally hearing her husband’s last message.
And the next words changed everything.
“Margaret, if Richard comes back…”
A pause.
A sound of someone breathing.
“Do not trust him.””
Richard’s expression collapsed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Because Edward’s final secret…
May you like
Was not protecting Richard.
It was exposing him.
