Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Money

The voice disappeared.

But the fear it left behind remained.

Nobody in the east wing moved.

The mansion, which had always been filled with elegant conversations and quiet footsteps, now felt like a battlefield.

Thomas stared at Margaret.

“Victor Hale?””

Margaret didn’t answer immediately.

Her eyes remained fixed on the speaker above them.

She looked like someone who had just found the missing piece of a puzzle she had spent months trying to solve.

Rachel, however, looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Thomas noticed.

And that scared him more than the voice itself.

“You knew he was involved,” Thomas said.

Rachel looked away.

“Thomas…”

“No.””

His voice was louder now.

“You knew.””

Rachel’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

Margaret slowly turned toward her.

“Then explain.””

Rachel looked at Margaret.

For the first time since this began, she looked small.

Not because Margaret was threatening her.

Because the truth was finally catching up.

“I was trying to protect myself,” Rachel said.

Thomas stared at her.

“By working with him?””

Rachel didn’t respond.

Margaret stepped forward.

“Victor Hale does not protect people.””

Her voice was calm.

“He uses them.””

Rachel looked angry.

“You don’t know him.””

Margaret gave a quiet, bitter smile.

“I know exactly who he is.””

The memory came back.

Eight months earlier.

A business meeting in New York.

A man in an expensive gray suit sitting across from Margaret, smiling politely while offering to “help” Whitmore Industries survive a difficult financial year.

Victor Hale had been charming.

Respectful.

Patient.

But Margaret had learned something during her decades in business.

The most dangerous people were not the ones who demanded power.

They were the ones who offered help.

Victor had asked for access to financial records.

Then company strategy reports.

Then private information about shareholders.

Each request had sounded reasonable.

Until they weren’t.

Margaret had refused.

And after that, the problems began.

Small problems at first.

A delayed contract.

A missing payment.

A rumor about company instability.

Someone had been trying to weaken Whitmore Industries from the inside.

And Margaret had spent months searching for the person opening the door.

She never imagined the person would be standing beside her at the family table.

Rachel.

“You made a deal with him,” Margaret said.

Rachel’s silence answered.

Thomas looked disgusted.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because I was tired.””

“Tired?””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“Tired of being invisible.””

Nobody spoke.

Rachel continued.

“Do you know what it’s like living in this family?””

Thomas stared.

“You had everything.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I had a last name.””

She looked around the mansion.

“But everything belonged to Margaret.””

Margaret said nothing.

Rachel laughed softly.

“You were always the genius. The leader. The woman everyone respected.””

Her eyes moved toward Thomas.

“And I was always the person standing behind you.””

Thomas looked hurt.

“That doesn’t justify this.””

Rachel’s expression became colder.

“Maybe not.””

A pause.

“But it explains it.””

Margaret studied her.

“Victor promised you control.””

Rachel looked away.

“Yes.””

“And what did he promise you in return?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

Margaret already knew.

“Whitmore Industries.””

The room went silent.

Thomas stepped back.

“You were going to give him the company?””

Rachel looked at him.

“I was going to take my share.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You were going to hand him everything.””

Suddenly, the mansion speakers crackled again.

Victor’s voice returned.

“I’m disappointed, Margaret.””

Everyone looked upward.

“You always did underestimate how easy it was to divide people.””

Margaret walked toward the speaker.

“Victor.””

“Yes?””

“Did you enjoy watching this?””

A pause.

Then a soft laugh.

“Actually, I enjoyed watching you realize you couldn’t trust your own family.””

Thomas looked down.

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Victor continued.

“Margaret, you built a company. But you forgot one thing.””

“What?””

“People change.””

Margaret’s expression remained calm.

“No.””

She looked at Rachel.

“People reveal themselves.””

Rachel looked uncomfortable.

Victor laughed.

“You still think you’ve won.””

Margaret looked around.

At the cameras.

At the hallway.

At the frightened faces around her.

Then she said:

“I know I have proof.””

A long silence followed.

Then Victor spoke again.

“Do you?””

Margaret’s expression shifted slightly.

Only slightly.

But Thomas noticed.

Something was wrong.

“What is it?”” he whispered.

Margaret didn’t answer.

Victor continued.

“You recorded Rachel.””

His voice became amused.

“Very clever.””

Rachel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor ignored her.

“You have footage of the cold storage room.””

Margaret stared at the speaker.

“Yes.””

“But you don’t have the original files.””

The air changed.

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“What does he mean?””

Margaret remained silent.

Victor continued.

“Because the security system was connected to my server.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“What?””

Victor laughed.

“You thought you were working with me.””

He paused.

“You were working for me.””

Rachel’s eyes widened.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The word echoed through the mansion.

“You were useful because Margaret trusted you.””

Rachel looked furious.

“You said I would get control.””

“I said many things.””

The cruelty in his voice made everyone uncomfortable.

Margaret watched Rachel’s reaction.

And for the first time, she saw something unexpected.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

Rachel had believed she was the partner.

She had no idea she was only a tool.

Victor continued.

“Now, Margaret, I suggest you hand over the remaining documents.””

Margaret looked toward the hallway.

“No.””

A pause.

Victor sighed.

“You really haven’t changed.””

“Neither have you.””

“Meaning?””

“You still believe money is the only thing people care about.””

Victor laughed.

“Isn’t it?””

Margaret looked at Thomas.

Then Clara.

Then Rachel.

And finally back at the speaker.

“No.””

Her voice was steady.

“Sometimes people care about the truth.””

The mansion lights suddenly returned.

But something was different.

A screen on the wall flickered on.

Everyone turned.

The security system.

A video appeared.

Rachel’s face filled the screen.

The footage showed the dining room.

The night before.

Rachel taking the documents.

Rachel ordering the guards.

Rachel locking Margaret away.

Everyone watched in silence.

Thomas looked horrified.

Clara covered her mouth.

Rachel stepped backward.

“No.””

Margaret looked at the screen.

The video continued.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Rachel leaned toward Margaret in the dining room and said:

“You think everyone still sees you as the powerful woman who built this company? They don’t. They see an old woman who can barely walk across the room without help.””

The hallway became silent.

Because now everyone heard it.

Not Margaret’s version.

Not an accusation.

The truth.

Rachel looked at the screen.

Then at Margaret.

“You tricked me.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

Rachel’s voice rose.

“You knew this would happen.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“I knew someone would try.””

The screen suddenly changed.

The video froze.

Then went black.

Victor’s voice returned.

“You see?””

Everyone looked upward.

“This is why I respect you, Margaret.””

A chill moved through the room.

“You prepare for everything.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“What do you want?””

Victor answered immediately.

“The one thing you refused to give me.””

“What?””

“Control.””

The screen changed again.

This time, a document appeared.

A digital copy of a transfer agreement.

Thomas stepped closer.

His face drained.

“No…”

Margaret looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas stared at the screen.

“That signature.””

Margaret followed his gaze.

A name appeared at the bottom.

Thomas Whitmore.

His signature.

His approval.

His authorization.

But Thomas looked terrified.

“That's impossible.””

Rachel looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I didn’t sign this.””

Margaret looked carefully at the document.

Because she knew one thing.

The signature was not fake.

It was perfect.

Too perfect.

Someone had copied it from somewhere.

And then she noticed something else.

A date.

A date from three months earlier.

A date when Thomas had been nowhere near the company.

Margaret slowly looked at him.

“Thomas.””

He swallowed.

“Yes?””

“Where were you on this date?””

Thomas hesitated.

And that hesitation changed everything.

Because before Victor betrayed the family…

Before Rachel opened the door…

Before Margaret was trapped…

Someone else had already been moving pieces across the board.

May you like

And that person…

Had Thomas’s name attached to the evidence.
