Chapter 9: The Wife Who Was Never Supposed To Remember

Nobody moved.

Not after hearing her name.

Not after the recording accused her.

Emma stood beside Lily, frozen like someone had taken away the ability to breathe.

I stared at her.

My wife.

The woman who had held my hand through every nightmare.

The woman who knew every scar on my body.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and promised she loved me.

And now there was a voice from my forgotten past saying she was the first person they erased.

“Emma…”

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

She looked at me.

And I saw the answer before she spoke.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Ryan…”

I took a step back.

“No.””

She started crying.

“Please.””

I shook my head.

“Not another secret.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

“But I need you to understand something.””

I looked around the basement.

“At this point, I don’t even know if my own memories belong to me.””

My voice broke.

“But the one thing I thought I knew…”

I looked at her.

“Was you.””

Emma closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I wanted to tell you.””

Everyone reacted to those words.

Because everyone was tired of hearing them.

Thomas looked away.

Daniel clenched his jaw.

Even Evelyn remained silent.

I laughed softly.

“You all say that.””

I pointed around the room.

“You all wanted to tell me.””

My eyes returned to Emma.

“But nobody ever did.””

She stepped closer.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Lily.

Then Ava.

Then me.

“Of losing you.””

The answer hurt because it sounded honest.

But honesty after years of lies was a strange thing.

It didn’t heal anything.

It only showed you how deep the wound was.

The man in the black uniform watched us.

He smiled.

“This is exactly why memory manipulation fails.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

“People think memories are information.””

He tapped his temple.

“They aren’t.””

He looked at Emma.

“They are attachments.””

Then at me.

“They are weaknesses.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew about her.””

He nodded.

“Of course.””

“Who is Emma?””

The man smiled.

“That depends.””

“Depends on what?””

“Which version of her you want to know.””

The basement became colder.

Emma whispered:

“Stop.””

The man ignored her.

“Your wife was part of the original research team.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

Emma’s face collapsed.

“She was one of the people who designed the memory reconstruction process.””

My stomach twisted.

“Emma?””

She couldn’t deny it.

Because she didn’t.

“I was.””

The confession was quieter than a scream.

I stared at her.

“How?””

She wiped her tears.

“Before I met you, I worked in the research department.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You never told me.””

Emma gave him a broken smile.

“Because you weren’t the only one keeping secrets.””

I looked at her.

“What happened?””

She swallowed.

“I was assigned to monitor Subject One.””

The real Ryan stiffened.

“Me.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava held his hand.

Emma looked at her.

“I was supposed to study how your memories changed after the procedure.””

My chest tightened.

“But then?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“Then you woke up.””

I whispered:

“Me.””

She nodded.

“You weren’t supposed to be aware.””

The words felt like a knife.

“They expected a blank personality.””

She looked at me.

“But you opened your eyes and asked me if I was okay.””

I said nothing.

“I was supposed to record your behavior.””

Her voice shook.

“But I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because you weren’t a project.””

A tear fell.

“You were a person.””

The room went quiet.

“I watched you learn everything again.””

She looked at Lily.

“Your first laugh.””

“Your first steps.””

“Your first memory that belonged only to you.””

Her voice broke.

“And I realized something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“They didn’t create a replacement.””

She touched her chest.

“They created someone new.””

I looked away.

Because hearing that from her hurt more than hearing it from anyone else.

“Then why hide Ava?””

Emma closed her eyes.

“I didn’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued:

“Not at first.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Ava.

“When I discovered Ava was alive, I wanted to bring her to you.””

The real Ryan stared at her.

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

Emma’s face filled with regret.

“Because I learned the truth.””

“What truth?””

She looked at Evelyn.

“The organization wasn’t trying to hide Ava.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“They were trying to use her.””

Ava moved closer to me.

Emma continued:

“They knew Ryan would do anything to protect her.””

The real Ryan looked down.

“So they created a choice.””

She nodded.

“They gave him a way to save Ava.””

“And the cost?””

Emma looked at me.

“You.””

The room became silent.

“They told him he could preserve Ava’s memories, her safety, her future…”

She swallowed.

“But he had to sacrifice his own identity.””

I looked at the real Ryan.

“You chose.””

He nodded.

“I did.””

Emma continued.

“But they lied.””

“About what?””

“They didn’t just transfer Ryan’s memories.””

Her eyes met mine.

“They copied them.””

My breath caught.

“The procedure created you.””

She looked at me.

“But it also left Ryan alive.””

The real Ryan closed his eyes.

“I wasn’t supposed to wake up.””

Emma nodded.

“No.””

She looked toward the hidden walls.

“They kept him hidden because they were afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That two versions of the same person existed.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“And one of them proved their theory wrong.””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

The man in the black uniform suddenly laughed.

“You’re all still thinking too small.””

Everyone turned.

He stepped forward.

“The experiment was never about Ryan.””

He looked at Lily.

“It was never about Ava.””

Then his eyes landed on Emma.

“It was about her.””

Emma went pale.

“No.””

I immediately moved in front of her.

“Why?””

The man smiled.

“Because she was the first successful transfer.””

My body froze.

“What?””

Emma shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

The man looked at her.

“You don’t remember, do you?””

Silence.

Emma’s face changed.

“What?””

He reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a photograph.

And handed it toward me.

I looked at it.

A young Emma.

Standing beside a hospital bed.

On the bed was a woman.

Emma.

But younger.

Unconscious.

The date was twenty years earlier.

My hands trembled.

“What is this?””

The man answered:

“Your wife died twenty years ago.””

Nobody spoke.

Emma looked like the world had ended.

“No.””

He continued.

“And the woman standing here…”

He pointed at her.

“Is the first person they rebuilt.””

I looked at Emma.

She whispered:

“No.””

But her voice didn’t sound certain.

The man stepped closer.

“You thought your memories were stolen?””

He smiled.

“So were hers.””

The basement lights flickered.

Then the hidden walls around us began opening.

One by one.

Behind them were more rooms.

More files.

More photographs.

More experiments.

Emma covered her mouth.

Because on one of the walls was a picture of her.

A picture taken before she remembered being born.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

I walked closer.

My heart pounding.

The note said:

*Subject Three: Emma Carter. Memory restoration incomplete.*

I turned around slowly.

“Carter?””

Emma stared at the paper.

Then at me.

The man in uniform smiled.

“Now you understand.””

The real Ryan stepped forward.

“Ryan…”

But nobody knew which Ryan he was talking to.

Because the truth had changed again.

Emma wasn’t just the woman who knew my secrets.

She was another secret.

And before anyone could speak, a final file slid out from the hidden room.

It landed at my feet.

On the cover was a name.

My name.

And beneath it:

*PROJECT FAMILY: FINAL PHASE*

I opened it.

The first page contained one sentence.

Written in my handwriting.

*If you are reading this, then Emma and I failed to protect Lily from what she really is.*

I looked at my daughter.

My heart stopped.

Because Lily was standing beside the wall.

Staring at the file.

May you like

And whispering:

“I remember too.””
