Chapter 6: The Woman Who Created Me

The woman standing at the basement door did not look like a monster.

That was the most terrifying part.

Monsters were supposed to look dangerous.

They were supposed to have cold eyes, cruel smiles, something that warned you to run.

But she looked ordinary.

An elegant woman in her sixties.

Gray hair neatly tied back.

A dark coat hanging over her shoulders.

A calm expression.

Like she had walked into a family gathering instead of a room filled with broken secrets.

Her eyes moved across the basement.

First to Thomas.

Then Daniel.

Then the real Ryan.

Finally…

To me.

And she smiled.

“Hello, son.””

My entire body went rigid.

I hated that word.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it felt familiar.

A part of me reacted before my mind could.

A strange warmth.

A buried memory.

A feeling of being held.

A lullaby.

I hated it.

Because I didn’t know if it belonged to me.

The real Ryan stepped forward.

“Evelyn.””

The woman’s smile faded slightly.

“So you remember my name.””

His face hardened.

“I remember enough.””

She looked at him sadly.

“That’s unfortunate.””

I stared at her.

“You’re my mother?””

Her eyes returned to me.

“Yes.””

The answer came too easily.

No hesitation.

No explanation.

Just certainty.

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“I don’t know who I am anymore.””

Evelyn tilted her head.

“That’s because they made you believe you were someone else.””

I clenched my fists.

“You made me.””

“Yes.””

No denial.

No shame.

The honesty was worse.

The basement became silent.

Emma stepped closer to Lily.

Protecting her.

Ava stayed beside the real Ryan.

And I stood in the middle.

Between the person I had been told I was…

And the person everyone claimed I replaced.

“Why?””

My voice barely worked.

“Why did you create me?””

Evelyn looked around the room.

At the photographs.

The files.

The evidence.

Then back at me.

“Because my son was dying.””

The real Ryan looked away.

“I wasn’t dying.””

She looked at him.

“You begged me to save you.””

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Isn’t it?””

Their eyes locked.

And for the first time, I saw something between them.

Not just anger.

Pain.

A mother and son who had destroyed each other.

Evelyn stepped into the basement.

Nobody stopped her.

Not because we trusted her.

Because everyone was afraid of what she knew.

“The accident damaged your brain,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You told me it was a memory problem.””

“It was.””

She walked toward the files.

“But not the way you think.””

She picked up one folder.

“When you discovered the research facility, you found out what we were doing.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And what were you doing?””

Daniel stayed silent.

Evelyn answered.

“We were studying memory transfer.””

My stomach tightened.

“Moving memories from one person to another?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

She smiled faintly.

“So was walking again after a spinal injury. So was communicating across continents instantly. Humans call things impossible until someone proves them wrong.””

I hated how calm she was.

Like she was discussing science.

Not people.

Not lives.

Not children.

“You experimented on me.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

“Yes.””

The word landed like a punch.

I looked at Emma.

She closed her eyes.

She knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

“What did you do?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“We saved you.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You stole my life.””

Her face softened.

“That was never the intention.””

“Then what was?””

She looked at the real Ryan.

“Your brother was dying.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at her.

“My brother?””

She nodded.

The room became completely silent.

The real Ryan looked at me.

And I understood.

The photograph.

The child beside me.

The missing memories.

A family I never remembered.

Evelyn continued.

“Before Ava was born, Ryan had a younger brother.””

My mind felt like it was breaking apart.

“No.””

The real Ryan whispered:

“Ethan.””

The name hit me strangely.

Like a door opening somewhere deep inside.

A boy running through a backyard.

A voice saying:

“Don’t tell Mom.””

A hand holding mine.

Then gone.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

Images flashed.

Not mine.

Not his.

Something else.

A memory.

A life.

Evelyn noticed.

“You’re remembering.””

I looked at her.

“What did you put inside me?””

Her silence answered.

“Whose memories?””

She didn’t respond.

The real Ryan did.

“Ethan’s.””

My heart stopped.

I stared at him.

“You transferred someone else’s memories into me?””

He looked devastated.

“Yes.””

I backed away.

“No.””

Ava looked confused.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

And that hurt most.

Because I didn’t know which father she was calling.

The real Ryan stepped toward me.

“Listen.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No more.””

My voice rose.

“No more secrets.””

I pointed at Evelyn.

“You created me.””

I pointed at Thomas.

“You hid me.””

I pointed at Daniel.

“You helped them.””

Then I looked at Emma.

“You knew.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“How long?””

She whispered:

“Since before we got married.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“You married me knowing I wasn’t…”

I couldn’t finish.

Emma stepped closer.

“Knowing you were still you.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She cried.

“It means I fell in love with you.””

The room went quiet.

“I knew the truth before you did. I knew about the procedure. I knew about Ava. I knew about Ryan.””

She looked at the real Ryan.

“But I also knew something they didn’t.””

“What?””

Her voice broke.

“You weren’t a copy.””

I stared at her.

“You were the man who held my hand when my mother died.””

“The man who sat beside Lily’s crib every night.””

“The man who sang when she couldn’t sleep.””

“The man I married.””

She touched her chest.

“I don’t care what name they gave you.””

Those words almost broke me.

Almost.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“You see?””

Everyone looked at her.

“This is why the experiment succeeded.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

She smiled slightly.

“Because he developed independent emotional memory.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re proud of this?””

Evelyn ignored him.

“The original goal was simple. Preserve a person’s consciousness.””

She looked at me.

“But Ryan became something unexpected.””

“What?””

“A new person.””

The words hung there.

Not a copy.

Not a replacement.

A new person.

Then the real Ryan spoke quietly.

“And that’s why they wanted him destroyed.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He looked toward the basement door.

The answer was obvious.

“The organization.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“They’re here.””

Everyone froze.

Ava immediately grabbed my hand.

Not his.

Mine.

The realization hit me.

She had been afraid.

But she still reached for me.

My chest tightened.

The basement windows suddenly shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Everyone dropped.

A man outside shouted:

“Secure the basement!””

Footsteps surrounded the house.

Not one person.

Dozens.

Thomas grabbed a weapon from beneath the table.

I stared at him.

“You had a gun?””

He looked embarrassed.

“I knew this day might come.””

Daniel moved toward the back exit.

“We need to split up.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at me.

“They’re not here for Ava.””

My blood ran cold.

“Then who are they here for?””

Her eyes met mine.

“They’re here for the memories inside you.””

The basement door shook.

Someone was trying to break in.

Ava whispered:

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“But if they take them…”

She swallowed.

“Will you disappear?””

I opened my mouth.

I didn’t know the answer.

Because for the first time, I understood the real danger.

It wasn’t losing my past.

It wasn’t discovering I wasn’t who I thought I was.

It was losing myself.

The door upstairs exploded open.

Voices filled the house.

Evelyn grabbed a hidden folder from the cabinet.

Then she looked directly at me.

“There is one final memory you need to see.””

I stared at her.

“What memory?””

She held out a small device.

A recording.

One made twelve years ago.

“It’s the moment you asked us to create you.””

I shook my head.

“I would never ask for that.””

Evelyn pressed the button.

The basement filled with static.

Then a voice came through.

My voice.

Younger.

Broken.

Terrified.

“If something happens to me…”

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“Don’t save me.””

My heart stopped.

“Save him.””

A pause.

Then my voice whispered:

“Create someone who can be the father Ava needs.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

I wasn’t created because Ryan Carter was weak.

I was created because he loved his daughter enough to sacrifice himself.

Then the basement door finally broke open.

And a group of armed strangers entered.

The man leading them looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Finally.””

He raised a photograph.

A photograph of me.

Before I existed.

May you like

And said:

“Bring Subject Two home.””
