Chapter 5: The Man Behind The Wall

The wall moved.

Not cracked.

Not shook.

Moved.

Like something on the other side had been waiting years for someone to finally unlock the door.

Dust poured from the ceiling as the old wooden panels shifted apart.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared.

I stood frozen, staring at the opening.

Behind it was darkness.

But not empty darkness.

Someone was breathing.

My breathing stopped.

Because the voice that came from inside that wall had been mine.

“Ryan…”

Ava grabbed my hand.

“Daddy, please.””

I looked down at her terrified face.

Then at the opening.

Every instinct in my body told me to run.

But another part of me — the part that had spent years searching for answers without knowing what questions to ask — pulled me forward.

Thomas stepped in front of me.

“Don’t.””

I stared at him.

“You heard that voice.””

His face was pale.

“Ryan, you don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s the one thing everyone keeps telling me.””

My anger rose.

“You don’t understand.””

I pointed at the wall.

“You don’t understand.””

I pointed at Ava.

“You don’t understand.””

Then I looked at Thomas.

“You don’t understand.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than any scream.

Daniel moved beside me.

“Ryan, whatever is in there—”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Whatever is in there knows my name.””

The voice came again.

This time clearer.

“Ryan…”

Ava covered her ears.

“Make it stop.””

I immediately pulled her close.

“It’s okay.””

But my own voice sounded uncertain.

Because I didn’t know if anything was okay anymore.

Emma stepped forward.

“Ryan.””

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“I need to tell you something.””

I laughed quietly.

“Another secret?””

Her face tightened.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked down.

I already knew.

Never.

I turned away.

“Not now.””

“Please.””

“No.””

My voice softened when I looked at Lily and Ava.

“Not in front of them.””

For a moment, Emma looked ashamed.

Then Thomas spoke.

“We don’t have time.””

I turned toward him.

“You’re the last person who gets to tell me what we have time for.””

He ignored my anger.

“The people who created the treatment are still looking for Ava.””

The name immediately changed the atmosphere.

Ava froze.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“You said they were gone.””

“I was wrong.””

“You knew they survived?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“You knew.””

I watched the two men.

There was history between them.

Something they weren’t telling me.

Again.

I stepped closer.

“What are you both hiding?””

Nobody responded.

The wall behind us creaked.

The opening widened.

A hand appeared.

Everyone stepped back.

Except me.

Because the hand looked familiar.

Same scar.

Same fingers.

Same small mark near the thumb.

My hand.

My skin went cold.

A man pulled himself out from the hidden space.

And I stared at myself.

Not a reflection.

Not a photograph.

A person.

A person who looked like me.

Older.

Exhausted.

His hair was longer.

His face had deeper lines.

But his eyes…

They were mine.

Lily screamed.

Emma covered her mouth.

Ava whispered:

“No…”

The man looked at me.

And tears filled his eyes.

“You found me.””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

My mind rejected what I was seeing.

Then he said something that broke through everything.

“I’ve been waiting twelve years.””

The room went silent.

Thomas whispered:

“Ryan…”

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He looked at the other man.

Then at me.

His face showed something I had never seen before.

Guilt.

“This is the real Ryan.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

I looked back at the man.

“No.””

The man’s expression shattered.

“I know this is hard.””

“No.””

I stepped backward.

“No.””

The other Ryan looked at Ava.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Ava.””

The little girl froze.

Her lips trembled.

“Daddy?””

My heart stopped.

Because she wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at him.

The man who had been behind the wall.

The man she recognized.

I felt something inside me break.

The stranger moved toward her.

But Ava didn’t run.

She ran to him.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because I understood.

She had been waiting for him too.

He held her tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

His voice cracked.

“I’m so sorry.””

Ava buried her face against him.

“You said you’d come back.””

He closed his eyes.

“I tried.””

I stood there watching another version of myself hold the daughter I had just discovered.

A daughter who had spent years waiting for someone else.

Emma walked toward me.

“Ryan…”

I moved away.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But final.

“Who am I?””

Nobody answered.

The real Ryan looked at me.

And somehow, seeing my own face look at me with sadness was worse than any enemy.

“You’re me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He looked around the basement.

“This was the last part of the procedure.””

“What procedure?””

His eyes moved to the files.

“The memory reconstruction.””

I felt sick.

“What does that mean?””

He took a breath.

“It means they didn’t erase my memories.””

He pointed at me.

“They moved them.””

The room went completely silent.

I stared at him.

“What?””

“They created a second identity.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.””

The real Ryan looked at him.

“You helped design it.””

Daniel went pale.

I looked between them.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked away.

My stomach turned.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

The real Ryan continued.

“When the experiment failed, they needed someone to carry the memories.””

He looked at me.

“So they created you.””

I felt the world tilt.

“No.””

“You lived my life.””

“No.””

“You married Emma.””

“No.””

“You raised Lily.””

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

“No…”

The real Ryan stepped closer.

“But you’re not fake.””

Those words stopped me.

He looked at me.

“That’s what they never expected.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

“They thought you would just be a copy.””

He touched his chest.

“But you became your own person.””

I stared at him.

The idea was impossible.

But somehow…

It felt right.

Because I loved Lily.

I loved Emma.

Those feelings weren’t borrowed.

They were mine.

Then the real Ryan said something that made everyone freeze.

“There’s one thing they never told you.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His expression turned serious.

“The memories they put inside you weren’t mine.””

A cold silence filled the basement.

“What are you saying?””

He looked toward Thomas.

Then Daniel.

“They weren’t trying to save my memories.””

His eyes returned to mine.

“They were trying to hide someone else’s.””

A sound came from upstairs.

The front door opened.

Again.

But this time, there were multiple footsteps.

Not one person.

Many.

Thomas looked toward the stairs.

His face drained of color.

“They found us.””

Daniel immediately moved toward the exit.

“We need to go.””

But before anyone could move, a voice echoed from the hallway.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar.

“Ryan.””

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“You finally opened the basement.””

Emma whispered:

“No…”

I turned toward her.

“You know that voice?””

She couldn’t answer.

The woman called again.

“Bring Ava to me.””

Ava grabbed the real Ryan’s hand.

The real Ryan looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Because he knew exactly who was standing outside.

I looked at him.

“Who is she?””

He stared at the basement door.

Then whispered:

“The person who made you.””

The doorknob began to turn.

And then the woman said my name.

Not Ryan’s.

Mine.

The name only my family knew.

“Come out, son.””

The door opened.

And the woman standing there was holding a photograph of me as a newborn.

May you like

With her name written on the back.

*Mother.*
