Chapter 8: The Account Claire Discovered

Nobody spoke after Lily finished.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

My seven-year-old daughter stood in the doorway of the room where I had hidden from my own memories for eight years, carrying the one piece of information that could break everything we thought we knew.

Claire knew.

Claire suspected Vanessa.

And somehow, Lily remembered.

I walked toward her slowly.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked up at me.

“Come here.””

She ran into my arms.

The second I held her, I realized something I had been avoiding all day.

Lily wasn’t just a witness.

She was a child who had been carrying pieces of this secret alone.

I held her tighter.

“You should have told me.””

Her voice was small.

“Mommy said not to unless something bad happened.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she said grown-ups can make mistakes when they’re scared.””

I closed my eyes.

That sounded exactly like Claire.

Always protecting everyone.

Even when she was the one in danger.

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time since she entered my house, she looked powerless.

Not innocent.

Not angry.

Powerless.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“What?””

“What did Claire find?””

Her lips pressed together.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling the truth.””

The words felt almost insulting.

After everything.

After the cameras.

The lies.

The fake accusation.

The stolen letters.

I turned to the officer.

“She needs to answer questions.””

The officer nodded.

“She will.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I’m not a criminal.””

“No,” I said quietly.

“You’re just someone who thought she could control my family.””

Her face hardened.

“You have no idea what I’ve done for this family.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“I know what you did to this family.””

She flinched.

It was the first time I saw something behind her anger.

Regret.

But it disappeared quickly.

“I loved Claire.””

“Then why did she hide things from you?””

Vanessa had no answer.

That silence told me more than words could.

The officer collected the letter from Claire and placed it carefully into an evidence bag.

“We need to verify everything before making assumptions.””

“I understand.””

But I didn’t need anyone to tell me what I felt.

The truth was already moving toward me.

I just had to catch it.

An hour later, the house was finally quiet.

The police had taken statements.

The footage had been copied.

Vanessa and Michael were asked to remain available while the investigation continued.

They were still in the guest room downstairs.

I sat in my office with Claire’s letter in front of me.

Elena sat across from me.

For the first time all day, neither of us spoke.

There was too much damage between us.

Not because she had betrayed me.

Because she had been afraid to trust me.

And I understood why.

That hurt.

“Elena.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“Why did you really keep the letters?””

Her eyes dropped.

“I told you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You told me you were protecting Lily.””

She stayed quiet.

“But there’s more.””

Her fingers tightened around her coffee cup.

“I was scared you would blame me.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire asked me to protect Lily from someone close.””

I waited.

“And I thought if I told you everything, you would ask why Claire trusted me instead of you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Elena looked surprised.

“I know that sounds terrible.””

“No.””

I leaned back.

“Explain.””

She took a breath.

“The night Claire called me, she said she couldn’t tell you yet.””

“Why?””

“She said you were too close to the situation.””

I felt a sting.

“Too close?””

“She said you loved people so deeply that you sometimes ignored what they were capable of.””

I looked down.

Because again…

Claire knew me.

Better than anyone.

Elena continued.

“She said Vanessa had been changing.””

“How?””

“She became obsessed with Lily.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

Elena looked at me.

“You know she wanted time with Lily.””

She paused.

“But Claire thought it was something else.””

“What?””

“She thought Vanessa wanted to replace her.””

The words landed heavily.

Replace her.

A thought I had never allowed myself to have.

Because it sounded cruel.

But now I remembered things.

Small things.

Vanessa wearing Claire’s favorite perfume.

Vanessa buying Lily dresses that looked like ones Claire used to choose.

Vanessa correcting Lily when she said, “Mommy would like this.””

“She said, ‘Your mommy isn’t here anymore. You need someone who is.’”

My blood went cold.

“When did she say that?””

Elena looked down.

“Six months after Claire died.””

I stood up.

“She said that?””

Elena nodded.

“Lily was five.””

I walked toward the window.

The entire time.

All these years.

I thought Vanessa was grieving.

I thought she was trying to help.

Maybe she was.

Maybe somewhere in all of this, there was still a part of her that cared.

But love without boundaries could become something dangerous.

My phone rang.

A familiar name appeared.

My accountant.

I answered immediately.

“Robert.””

“Daniel, I got your message.””

“What message?””

There was a pause.

“The one asking about the old investment account.””

I looked at Elena.

“What account?””

Robert lowered his voice.

“The account Claire found.””

My heart stopped.

“You know about it?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Claire told me not to.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Another person who knew.

Another secret.

“Robert, I need everything.””

“Daniel—”

“Now.””

Silence.

Then:

“I’ll send it.””

A few seconds later, my phone received a file.

I opened it.

The documents loaded.

At first, they looked normal.

Investment reports.

Transfers.

Tax records.

Then I saw it.

A name.

A beneficiary.

My entire body went still.

Because the account wasn’t connected to Vanessa.

It wasn’t connected to Michael.

It wasn’t even connected to Claire.

It was connected to me.

But the person making withdrawals…

Was someone else.

I scrolled down.

There were years of transactions.

Small amounts.

Carefully hidden.

Money moved through different accounts.

Thousands at a time.

And every withdrawal had one authorization.

One signature.

I stared at the screen.

I knew that signature.

I had seen it on birthday cards.

On holiday invitations.

On documents inside my home.

I whispered the name.

“No.””

Elena looked at me.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward her.

Her face changed.

Because she knew the handwriting too.

The signature belonged to…

Michael.

The man who claimed he was only helping Vanessa.

The man who said he was afraid of her.

The man who claimed he didn’t know what Claire discovered.

I scrolled further.

There was one final transaction.

A large withdrawal.

Made two days before Claire died.

The description was simple.

*“Final payment.””*

My hands started shaking.

I looked at the date.

Then at Michael’s signature.

And suddenly every piece of the puzzle shifted.

The fake accusation.

The letters.

The stolen evidence.

The fear.

Maybe Vanessa wasn’t the person controlling everything.

Maybe she was just one piece.

I stood up.

“Where is Michael?””

Elena looked toward the door.

“He was downstairs.””

I walked out.

But before I reached the stairs, I heard the front door open.

I stopped.

A cold breeze entered the hallway.

Someone was leaving.

I rushed downstairs.

The guest room was empty.

The front door was wide open.

Michael was gone.

But on the table where he had been sitting was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

*“Daniel, I tried to stop her. But Claire found out what I did before she died.””*

My hands froze.

Underneath was a second line.

*“The person you should be afraid of is not Vanessa.””*

I looked at the empty doorway.

Then I saw what was written at the bottom.

Three words.

May you like

Words that made my entire body go cold.

*“Ask your father.””*
