Chapter 5: The Letters Claire Left Behind

The message stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.

I didn’t move.

I didn’t blink.

I just stared at those words.

*“If you want to know why Claire really died, stop protecting the wrong people.””*

The room around me disappeared.

The voices.

The footsteps.

The officers asking questions.

Everything became distant.

Because there was one thing I had never allowed myself to question.

Claire’s death.

Not because it didn’t hurt.

Because it hurt too much.

Eight years ago, I watched the woman I loved disappear from my life in a single night.

A car accident.

A wet road.

A phone call at 2:17 in the morning.

That was the story I had been given.

The story everyone accepted.

The story I had forced myself to accept.

Because the alternative was unbearable.

I looked at the empty wooden box on Claire’s dresser.

The place where I kept the last pieces of her.

Her handwritten notes.

Her birthday cards.

The small things that still carried her voice.

Someone had taken them.

Someone had entered my house and stolen memories from a woman who couldn’t defend herself.

My hands curled into fists.

“Daniel?””

Elena’s voice pulled me back.

I turned around.

She looked worried.

Not curious.

Not excited by the mystery.

Worried.

Like she understood what those letters meant.

“You knew about Claire’s letters?”” I asked.

Elena hesitated.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

She looked down.

“Because I found them.””

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

The room became silent.

“Two weeks ago?”” I repeated.

Elena nodded.

“I was cleaning Claire’s room.””

“That room is never cleaned.””

“I know.””

Her voice softened.

“But Lily had spilled something near the dresser. I was moving things carefully, and I found a loose panel behind the wooden box.””

I walked toward her.

“What was inside?””

“The letters.””

My heart started beating faster.

“How many?””

“Six.””

“Six?””

She nodded.

“They were all written by Claire.””

I looked at the empty box.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because I read the first one.””

My expression changed.

“You read my wife’s letters?””

“I’m sorry.””

She immediately looked ashamed.

“I shouldn’t have. But I saw your name on the envelope. I thought maybe it was something important about Lily.””

She paused.

“Then I realized they weren’t just letters.””

“What were they?””

Elena looked at Vanessa.

That was enough to make me understand.

“They were about her.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Don’t do this.””

I turned.

“What?””

“You’re going to believe her now?””

I stared at her.

“You mean the person who was framed by a fake assault?””

Vanessa’s mouth closed.

For once, she had no answer.

I looked back at Elena.

“What did Claire write?””

Elena took a breath.

“The first letter was about Vanessa.””

My stomach dropped.

“Tell me.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t remember every word.””

“Tell me what you remember.””

Elena looked toward Lily.

“Claire was worried.””

“About what?””

“About Vanessa becoming too attached to Lily.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa laughed.

A short, bitter sound.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Elena ignored her.

“She wrote that Vanessa loved Lily, but sometimes the way she acted didn’t feel normal.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She said Vanessa wanted to be needed.””

Michael looked away.

That reaction didn’t escape me.

“Michael,” I said.

He looked up.

“What?””

“You knew.””

He shook his head.

“Not about this.””

“Then why did you react like that?””

Michael swallowed.

Because he knew something.

Maybe not everything.

But something.

“I knew Vanessa had trouble accepting Claire was gone.””

“Meaning?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Meaning she never stopped acting like Claire was coming back.””

Nobody spoke.

The sentence hung in the air.

Vanessa looked furious.

“You’re making me sound insane.””

“No,” Michael said quietly.

“I’m saying you were hurting.””

She stared at him.

“You’re taking their side?””

“I’m taking the truth’s side.””

That was the first time Michael sounded like he meant it.

I turned back to Elena.

“The other letters?””

She looked down.

“I didn’t read all of them.””

“Why?””

“Because I felt guilty.””

“You hid my wife’s letters for two weeks.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I didn’t hide them from you. I hid them because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked at the empty box.

“Because after I read the first one, I noticed someone had been searching Claire’s room.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

“The room wasn’t the same.””

“What do you mean?””

“The books were moved. The drawer wasn’t closed properly. The wooden box had scratches.””

I looked at the dresser.

“You’re saying someone else found them?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before I did.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Why didn’t you report this?””

Elena looked embarrassed.

“Because I didn’t know what to do.””

“You should have told Mr. Carter.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“I thought if someone was searching for Claire’s letters, they might hurt Lily.””

That sentence hit me.

Because it was the same fear she had carried all day.

Protect Lily.

Always protect Lily.

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

The weight of everything pressed down.

Vanessa had lied.

Michael had helped.

Someone had stolen Claire’s letters.

And now I was questioning the one thing I thought I knew.

Claire’s death.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where were you the night Claire died?””

The question surprised everyone.

Especially Vanessa.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Her expression changed.

“Daniel, that was eight years ago.””

“Answer.””

“I was at home.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

Michael suddenly looked uncomfortable.

I noticed.

“Michael?””

He didn’t answer.

“Where were you?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“I don’t remember.””

That was impossible.

Not because eight years was a long time.

Because Claire’s death was the kind of night nobody forgot.

“You don’t remember?””

Michael looked down.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

I looked at her.

“Because someone just stole letters from my dead wife’s room and sent me a message about her death.””

The officer raised a hand.

“Everyone needs to stay calm.””

But I couldn’t.

Not anymore.

For eight years, I had lived inside a story someone else told me.

And now every piece of it was falling apart.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, there was a photo attached.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of Claire.

Not an old family photo.

A picture taken secretly.

Claire was standing outside a building.

Looking worried.

And beside her was someone I recognized immediately.

Someone standing in my house right now.

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Because the person in the picture was not Vanessa.

Not Michael.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been pretending to help me uncover the truth.

Someone who had known about Claire’s secrets all along.

May you like

And underneath the photo was a second message.

*“Ask Elena what happened the week before Claire died.””*
