Chapter 6: The Secret Elena Carried

The message was still glowing on my phone.

*“Ask Elena what happened the week before Claire died.””*

I read it again.

Then again.

Each time, the same question became louder in my head.

What happened?

And why did Elena know?

I looked at her.

She didn’t look confused.

She didn’t look shocked.

She looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

That scared me more than anything else.

“Elena.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

The room became completely silent.

Even Vanessa stopped talking.

Even Michael looked nervous.

Elena lowered her head.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

My stomach tightened.

“Find out what?””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked exhausted.

Like she had carried something heavy for years.

“Before Claire died, she asked me to watch over Lily.””

I frowned.

“I know that.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

She looked at the photograph on my phone.

“Claire didn’t just ask me to take care of Lily.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“What did she ask?””

Elena swallowed.

“She asked me to protect Lily from someone.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Of course.””

Everyone looked at her.

She gave a bitter smile.

“This is convenient.””

“What is?”” I asked.

“This story.””

She pointed at Elena.

“First she’s innocent because of a camera. Now she suddenly has secret information about my sister’s death?””

Elena looked hurt.

But she didn’t answer.

I noticed that.

She didn’t defend herself.

She just looked at me.

Waiting.

And somehow that made me more afraid.

“Who?”” I asked.

Elena’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Claire never said the name.””

“Why not?””

“Because she was scared.””

The word stayed in the air.

Claire.

Scared.

I had spent years remembering my wife as brave.

The woman who handled every problem.

The woman who smiled through exhaustion.

The woman who stood between Lily and every bad thing in the world.

The idea of Claire being afraid felt impossible.

“What did she say?”” I asked.

Elena looked toward the window.

Like she was seeing something from years ago.

“She called me late at night.””

“When?””

“Five days before the accident.””

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

“I almost didn’t answer because it was after midnight.””

Elena paused.

“But Claire sounded different.””

“Different how?””

“Like she was trying not to cry.””

The room went quiet.

“She asked me if I trusted her.””

I frowned.

“Why would she ask that?””

“Because she said someone close to her was lying.””

A silence followed.

Then Vanessa laughed.

A sharp, uncomfortable laugh.

“This is absurd.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because Claire trusted me.””

The confidence in her voice almost sounded desperate.

“She loved me.””

I stared at her.

“Did she?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

The officer noticed too.

Elena continued.

“Claire told me she had found something.””

“What?””

“She wouldn’t say.””

“Why?””

“She said if she was wrong, she would destroy someone’s life.””

I looked at the photo again.

Claire outside the building.

Worried.

Secretive.

Not the woman I remembered.

A woman who knew something.

“She told me one thing,” Elena said.

“What?””

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t let Lily be taken away from Daniel.’”

My chest tightened.

Taken away.

The exact words from the message.

The exact goal behind today’s attack.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”” I asked.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Claire made me promise.””

“You promised?””

“She said you would try to find answers.””

“I would have.””

“No.””

Her voice became firmer.

“She said you would blame yourself.””

That stopped me.

Because Claire knew me.

She knew exactly how I worked.

I carried every mistake.

Every regret.

Every moment I thought I could have done more.

“She said you would destroy yourself trying to find out the truth.””

I looked down.

Because she was right.

Michael stepped closer.

“Elena.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“You knew?””

The question sounded strange coming from him.

Like he wasn’t asking about Claire.

Like he was asking about something else.

Elena’s expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

Michael looked nervous.

“You knew about the building?””

My eyes moved between them.

“What building?””

Neither answered.

That was enough.

“Michael.””

He looked at me.

“What building?””

He exhaled slowly.

“The one in the picture.””

I held up the phone.

“You recognize it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Because I was there.””

The room exploded.

“What?””

My voice echoed.

Michael lifted his hands.

“Not with Claire.””

“Then why?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because Vanessa asked me to follow her.””

Everyone turned toward Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Michael continued.

“She thought Claire was hiding something.””

My heart pounded.

“You followed my wife?””

“I didn’t know what she was doing.””

“But you followed her.””

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

Honest.

And somehow worse.

I stepped closer.

“What did you see?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“I saw Claire meeting someone.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

He looked at the photo.

“That’s all I saw.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

Fear.

Fear of Vanessa.

Fear of the truth.

Fear of losing everything.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I never asked him to hurt anyone.””

The room went still.

I looked at her.

Nobody had accused her of that.

But she had just defended herself.

Too quickly.

The officer noticed.

“Ma’am, no one said anything about hurting anyone.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

I watched her carefully.

For years, I thought I knew Vanessa.

I thought she was emotional.

Lonely.

Overattached.

But now I wondered if those were just softer words for something much darker.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching all of us.

Confused.

Scared.

I immediately walked over.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked up.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But then she asked something that made my heart break.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Is Aunt Vanessa bad?””

I froze.

Children don’t ask questions like that unless they already feel the answer.

I sat beside her.

“I don’t know yet.””

It was the hardest thing I had ever admitted.

Because I wanted to protect her from uncertainty.

But I couldn’t protect her with lies.

Not anymore.

A few minutes later, the officer pulled me aside.

“Mr. Carter, we need to talk about what happens next.””

I nodded.

“We’ll need copies of the security footage. The letter. The messages.””

“Fine.””

“And everyone involved needs to remain available.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was standing near the window.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another unknown number.

Another message.

This time, there was no photo.

Only a sentence.

*“You’re looking at the wrong betrayal.””*

I frowned.

Before I could respond, another message appeared.

*“Elena did not tell you the most important part.””*

I looked up.

Elena was standing across the room.

She saw my face.

And immediately knew.

“What did they send?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly I realized something.

The person sending these messages wasn’t just exposing secrets.

They were controlling the order in which I discovered them.

They wanted me to distrust Vanessa.

Then Michael.

Then Elena.

They were leading me somewhere.

And the most terrifying part was…

I was following.

I turned toward Elena.

“What didn’t you tell me?””

Her face went completely still.

Then she whispered:

“The night Claire died…”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I was the last person who spoke to her.””

The room disappeared.

“What?””

Elena looked at me.

“And Claire didn’t sound like someone who was afraid of dying.””

She paused.

“She sounded like someone who knew someone else was going to die.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Elena looked toward Lily.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

“She said if anything happened to her, you had to check one place.””

“What place?””

Elena hesitated.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your old office.””

I stared at her.

My old office.

The room I had stopped using after Claire died.

The room nobody entered anymore.

The room where I kept the things I couldn’t bear to touch.

And suddenly I understood.

Someone hadn’t stolen Claire’s letters because they wanted to hide the past.

They had stolen them because they were afraid I would find what Claire left behind.

May you like

Something she had hidden.

Something that could finally explain why she died.
