The House That Remembered / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Truth Thomas Died For

I thought losing Maya once was the worst pain a mother could experience.

I was wrong.

The second time was different.

The first time, I was terrified.

The second time, I was furious.

Because now I knew someone was using my daughter as a weapon.

And I was done playing.

“Where is she?””

My voice echoed through the dark room.

Daniel searched the hallway.

“She couldn’t have gone far.””

“She was holding Maya.””

“No.””

He stopped.

“What?””

“She didn’t take her.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel pointed.

The crib.

Empty.

But the window was open.

Again.

My heart sank.

“She planned this.””

Daniel nodded.

“She wanted us to follow.””

“Then we follow.””

He grabbed my arm.

“Elena.””

I looked at him.

“No more.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You hid my husband’s secrets.””

“Yes.””

“You watched my mother destroy my family.””

His face broke.

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you failed.””

“Yes.””

I pulled away.

“Then help me fix it.””

For a moment, Daniel just stared.

Then he nodded.

“I know where she went.””

The old estate had underground tunnels.

I learned that ten minutes later.

Because apparently my husband’s family had secrets buried literally beneath the house.

We entered the basement.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

And one picture stopped me.

Thomas.

Rachel.

Maya.

And another person.

Me.

Except the photograph was taken before I met Thomas.

I touched the image.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“It’s me.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“It can’t be.””

But it was.

A younger version of me.

Standing beside Rachel.

Holding baby Maya.

My hands shook.

“I don’t remember this.””

Daniel whispered:

“Because someone erased it.””

The tunnel suddenly felt freezing.

“What?””

Daniel looked at the photo.

“Thomas found evidence that your mother manipulated memories.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She didn’t erase your memory.””

“Then what?””

“She controlled what you knew.””

I remembered.

The missing years.

The stories Diane told me.

The way she always answered questions before I could.

The way she described my childhood.

“You mean…”

“Yes.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your mother separated you from Rachel.””

The pieces fell into place.

Rachel wasn’t a stranger.

She was connected to me.

To Maya.

To Thomas.

But how?

Then I saw another document.

A birth record.

My name.

Elena Morgan.

And Rachel Vale.

Mother.

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

Daniel whispered:

“Elena…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

The truth was too big.

Too impossible.

But the paper didn’t care.

The paper didn’t lie.

Rachel was not just Maya’s mother.

Rachel was mine.

My biological mother.

The woman I was told abandoned me.

The woman Diane said never wanted me.

The woman who was supposedly dead.

A sound came from behind us.

Diane.

Clapping slowly.

“You finally found it.””

I turned.

She stood at the entrance.

Maya in her arms.

My daughter was crying.

But safe.

For now.

“You lied to me my entire life.””

Diane looked almost sad.

“I protected you.””

“You stole my mother.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I saved you from her.””

Rachel’s voice came from the tunnel behind her.

“You poisoned her against me.””

Everyone froze.

Rachel stepped forward.

Alive.

Real.

Angry.

Diane looked at her.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“You should have learned that monsters don’t disappear when you bury them.””

I looked at Diane.

“Why?””

She stared at me.

“Because I loved you.””

I laughed.

A broken laugh.

“No.””

“You were my daughter.””

“Not by blood.””

Diane’s face changed.

The first crack.

“You think blood matters?””

She stepped closer.

“I raised you.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Maya.

“And then you tried to take my daughter.””

Silence.

Diane looked away.

For the first time, she had no argument.

Rachel moved toward Maya.

Diane tightened her grip.

“Don’t.””

Everyone stopped.

Daniel whispered:

“Diane.””

She looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then hear it.””

Her eyes filled with something I had never seen before.

Regret.

“Thomas didn’t die because of me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He died because he found out who was really behind everything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Diane.””

She ignored him.

“Thomas discovered the person who had been controlling all of us.””

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

And Daniel went pale.

“No.””

Diane whispered:

“It was you.””

The tunnel went silent.

I turned slowly.

Toward the man who had protected me.

The man who had helped Thomas.

The man who had spent every day pretending to be my ally.

Daniel.

He looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

May you like

Because whatever Diane had just said…

He knew it was true.
