Chapter 5: The Name on the Adoption Papers

I didn’t open the envelope until the next morning.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I needed one night where Maya was just my daughter.

Not evidence.

Not a mystery.

Not a secret.

Just Maya.

I sat beside her crib and watched her sleep.

Her tiny hand was wrapped around my finger.

The same way she had done since birth.

Thomas used to say she recognized me before she recognized the world.

I believed that.

I needed to believe that.

At six in the morning, Daniel came back.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

Neither had I.

“You should leave,” I said.

He stopped.

“Elena.””

“I mean it.””

“I understand why you’re angry.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t.””

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

Daniel Cho always defended himself.

Always had an explanation.

Not today.

“I should have told you more,” he said.

“Yes.””

“But Thomas asked me not to.””

“And you obeyed him.””

“Yes.””

“Even after he died?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Especially after he died.””

I hated that answer.

Because part of me understood it.

Thomas had been my husband.

He had loved me.

But he was gone.

And I was the one standing in the wreckage.

I placed the envelope on the table.

“Open it.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“You know more than I do.””

“No.””

“Open it.””

Slowly, he picked it up.

The envelope was sealed.

No name.

No date.

Only one word written across the front.

*ELENA.*

Daniel opened it.

Inside were several documents.

The first page was an adoption agreement.

My hands went numb.

I grabbed it.

I read the name.

*Thomas Morgan.*

*Legal Father.*

Then another name.

Not Maya’s.

A name I had never seen before.

*Rachel Vale.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Rachel.””

He nodded slowly.

“She was Maya’s biological mother.””

The room tilted.

“No.””

“Elena—”

“No.””

I stood.

Pain shot through my leg.

I ignored it.

“You’re telling me Thomas had a child with another woman?””

“No.””

“Then explain this.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Rachel was involved with Thomas before he met you.””

I felt sick.

“How long?””

“Years.””

I looked away.

Every memory rearranged itself.

Every conversation.

Every unexplained phone call.

Every business trip.

I hated my own mind for trying to fill in gaps.

“Did he cheat on me?””

Daniel answered immediately.

“No.””

The certainty surprised me.

“He ended that relationship before he met you.””

“Then why adopt Maya?””

“Because Rachel died.””

The room became quiet.

“How?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Her death was connected to Diane.””

Again.

That name.

Always that name.

“What does my mother have to do with everything?””

Daniel sat down.

“Rachel discovered Diane had been moving money through fake accounts connected to Thomas’s father’s company.””

“And?””

“She threatened to expose her.””

I felt cold.

“So Diane killed her?””

“No.””

Daniel’s answer was firm.

“But she allowed things to happen.””

I looked at Maya.

My daughter.

My little girl.

The child everyone had been fighting over.

“Thomas adopted her to protect her.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Because Rachel made him promise.””

“Promise what?””

“That Maya would never know her past until she was old enough.””

I closed my eyes.

All this time.

I thought Thomas had hidden things because he didn’t trust me.

But maybe…

Maybe he was carrying something he believed was too dangerous to share.

A noise came from the front door.

Daniel stood immediately.

Someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Not a neighbor.

Not a delivery person.

A warning.

I opened the security camera.

A woman stood outside.

Older.

Dark hair.

Wearing a gray coat.

And around her neck—

A silver tree pendant.

My breath caught.

“Rachel.””

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Like she knew we were watching.

Then she spoke.

The camera captured her voice.

“Elena Morgan.””

I froze.

“My daughter is inside your house.””

Daniel stepped closer.

The woman continued:

“And your mother knows exactly where she came from.””

My hand covered my mouth.

Daniel whispered:

“Rachel died twelve years ago.””

The woman outside raised her hand.

She held a photograph.

A photograph of Thomas.

Then she said:

May you like

“He lied about my death.””

The camera screen went black.
