Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Rachel Vale was gone.
No footprints.
No car.
No evidence she had ever been there.
Except one thing.
The photograph she left behind.
The officer placed it inside a plastic evidence bag.
“Where did you get this?””
I looked at the picture.
Thomas.
Rachel.
A baby.
A hospital room.
And Diane standing beside the bed.
“I don’t know.””
The officer looked confused.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Because I didn’t know anything anymore.
Not about my husband.
Not about my mother.
Not even about the house I had lived in for six years.
After the officer left, Daniel stayed.
I wanted him gone.
But I also needed answers.
Both things could be true.
“Tell me about Rachel.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“She was the reason Thomas started investigating Diane.””
“Not money?””
“Money was part of it.””
“What was the real reason?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Rachel found proof that Diane had been manipulating Thomas’s family for years.””
“How?””
“She created conflicts between people. She controlled information. She made sure everyone depended on her.””
I almost laughed.
“That sounds exactly like her.””
Daniel nodded.
“Thomas realized too late.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the neighborhood looked normal.
Children riding bicycles.
People walking dogs.
A man washing his car.
Normal.
That was the cruelest part.
The world kept moving even when yours collapsed.
“Why would Rachel pretend to die?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered.
“Who is this?””
Silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
“Your husband saved my life.””
I gripped the phone.
“Rachel?””
“Yes.””
Daniel immediately moved closer.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
“Rachel, tell me what happened.””
Her voice shook.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
“Diane?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“What did she do?””
“She found out I had evidence.””
“What evidence?””
“Proof that she changed Maya’s records.””
I looked at Daniel.
Rachel continued:
“Your mother wanted everyone to believe Maya was connected to Thomas through money.””
“What does that mean?””
“She wanted control over the inheritance.””
My heart sank.
“So Maya…”
“She is Thomas’s legal daughter.””
I closed my eyes.
Relief.
Pain.
Anger.
Everything at once.
“But Diane changed the records?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew Thomas would leave everything to Maya.””
I froze.
Everything.
The house.
The money.
The accounts.
The inheritance.
Diane wasn’t trying to steal from me.
She was trying to steal from my daughter.
“She hated that Thomas chose someone else.””
Rachel’s voice became quieter.
“Your mother doesn’t love people, Elena.””
The words hurt.
Because they sounded familiar.
“She collects them.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Toward my children.
“What happened to you?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Thomas helped me disappear.””
“Why?””
“Because Diane tried to kill me.””
Daniel went still.
The room became silent.
“What?””
Rachel whispered:
“She pushed my car off the road.””
My fingers went numb.
“But the crash report…”
“Was changed.””
“By who?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Diane.
Again.
Always Diane.
Then Rachel said:
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“Thomas didn’t die because of the accident.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you say?””
“The crash that killed Thomas was not an accident.””
I couldn’t speak.
Daniel looked at me.
Rachel continued:
“Your husband discovered Diane’s final move.””
“What move?””
A long pause.
Then:
“She was planning to take Maya.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
“No.””
“She believed if Maya disappeared, the inheritance would go through another legal process.””
I felt sick.
My mother.
My own mother.
The woman who had held my daughter.
Fed my children.
Lived under my roof.
Had been planning—
A sound came from upstairs.
A scream.
Maya.
I dropped the phone.
Daniel ran with me.
We reached the nursery.
The door was open.
The window was broken.
Cold air rushed inside.
Leo was crying.
Maya’s crib was empty.
On the floor was a note.
Three words written in black ink.
*NOW YOU UNDERSTAND.*
I picked it up.
My hands shaking.
Daniel looked out the broken window.
Then he said the words I never wanted to hear.
“Elena…”
I turned.
“There’s no sign of Diane.””
My heart stopped.
Because I already knew.
My mother hadn’t come back for the house.
She hadn’t come back for money.
May you like
She had come back for my daughter.
And she had finally taken her.
