Chapter 9: The Truth Daniel Buried

Daniel spent the night searching through old memories.

Not documents.

Not photographs.

Memories.

Because the truth had been there.

Waiting.

The hardest part wasn’t discovering what happened.

It was discovering what he had refused to remember.

He returned to Claire’s old house with Detective Harris.

This time, he wasn’t searching for evidence.

He was searching for himself.

“Why did Claire say I knew?”” Daniel asked.

The detective looked around.

“Maybe because she believed you noticed something.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

Then he stopped.

Because that wasn’t completely true.

He had noticed.

He had just ignored it.

Six years ago.

The night Claire died.

He remembered arriving home.

But he remembered something else too.

The front door.

It was open.

Claire never left doors open.

Never.

He remembered the broken glass near the stairs.

He remembered Vanessa standing there.

Too calm.

Too prepared.

He remembered asking:

“What happened?””

And Vanessa answering:

“She fell.””

No hesitation.

No panic.

Just an answer.

Daniel covered his face.

“I knew.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“What?””

“I knew something was wrong.””

The words came out slowly.

“I knew.””

But then he remembered the worst part.

He had chosen not to investigate.

Because he was exhausted.

Because he was grieving.

Because accepting the truth meant losing the life he had built.

“I abandoned her.””

The detective shook his head.

“You were manipulated.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That doesn’t erase my choice.””

And that was the difference now.

He wasn’t running from guilt anymore.

He was facing it.

When he returned to Margaret’s house, Lily was outside drawing.

A picture.

Daniel sat beside her.

“What are you making?””

Lily covered it quickly.

“Nothing.””

He smiled softly.

“You don’t have to show me.””

A few seconds passed.

Then she moved the paper.

Daniel looked.

It was a family.

But this time, something was different.

There was a girl.

A boy.

A grandmother.

A father.

And a mother in the sky.

Claire.

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“She’s still with us,” Lily whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

That evening, Vanessa finally agreed to speak.

Not because she felt guilty.

Because she wanted control.

She sat across from Daniel during the interview.

“You look different.””

Daniel stared.

“I know what happened.””

Vanessa smiled.

“No.””

She leaned forward.

“You know what Lily thinks happened.””

Daniel said nothing.

“You always were easy to convince.””

He watched her carefully.

“Did you hurt Claire?””

Vanessa smiled.

A small smile.

The same one Lily had feared.

“Claire was weak.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“It’s the truth.””

The detective interrupted.

“Answer the question.””

Vanessa leaned back.

“I didn’t kill Claire.””

Daniel stared.

“Then what did you do?””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I tried to fix a problem.””

“What problem?””

She looked directly at him.

“Your family.””

The room went silent.

“You wanted Claire gone.””

Vanessa shrugged.

“She was always in the way.””

Daniel felt sick.

“She was Lily’s mother.””

“And I was trying to be her mother.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were trying to replace her.””

Vanessa smiled.

“And it worked for a while.””

The sentence was so cruel that even the detective looked disturbed.

Then Vanessa added:

“Until your daughter ruined everything.””

Daniel stood.

“Don’t talk about her like that.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

Almost amused.

“Now you’re protecting her?””

“Yes.””

The word came immediately.

No hesitation.

And maybe that was the first time in Lily’s life he had answered fast enough.

“Yes.””

The interview ended.

But as Daniel walked away, Detective Harris received a message.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Daniel stopped.

“What happened?””

The detective looked up.

“We found Eric’s hidden files.””

Daniel waited.

“There’s a video.””

“Of what?””

The detective hesitated.

“Of the night Claire died.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Play it.””

The detective looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“Play it.””

The screen turned on.

The footage was dark.

A hidden camera.

A room.

A frightened Claire.

A younger Vanessa.

A younger Eric.

Then the camera turned.

Showing someone standing outside the doorway.

Someone who had never appeared in any report.

Someone Daniel never knew was there.

The person stepped into the light.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Because the final secret of that night…

May you like

Was not what Vanessa and Eric did.

It was who helped them.
