Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Finally Spoke

Lily refused to sleep.

Not because she was afraid of the dark.

Because she was afraid of waking up.

Margaret found her sitting beside the window at three in the morning.

Her stuffed rabbit was in her arms.

“Sweetheart?””

Lily looked back.

“I heard Daddy crying.””

Margaret sat beside her.

“Yes.””

“Was he sad?””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Because of me?””

The question broke Margaret’s heart.

“No.””

She gently brushed Lily’s hair away.

“Because he finally understood.””

Lily looked outside.

“I don’t want him to be sad.””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“That’s because you have always been kind.””

Lily looked down.

“Vanessa said kindness makes people weak.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

She held Lily’s hand.

“Kindness is what makes people worth saving.””

The next morning, Daniel came to see her.

He looked different.

Not like the father who had ignored the signs.

Like a man carrying the weight of every mistake.

He sat on the floor beside her.

“I found something.””

Lily looked at him.

“About Mommy?””

Daniel nodded.

“She loved you very much.””

Lily hugged her rabbit.

“I know.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You know?””

Lily nodded.

“She told me.””

“When?””

Lily touched the rabbit’s ear.

“Before she went away.””

Daniel’s breathing stopped.

“Lily…”

She looked at him.

“You said I remembered more.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Can you tell me?””

Lily was quiet for a long time.

Then she nodded.

“I was hiding.””

Daniel waited.

“Mommy told me to stay quiet.””

“Why?””

“Because she said Vanessa was angry.””

Daniel felt sick.

Lily continued.

“Mommy came to my room.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She gave me Bunny.””

The stuffed rabbit.

“She said, ‘If you’re scared, hold him and remember Mommy loves you.’”

Daniel wiped his face.

“What happened after?””

Lily looked at the floor.

“Mommy went downstairs.””

“And?””

“I heard yelling.””

Daniel stayed silent.

“I heard Eric.””

A pause.

“And Vanessa.””

“What did they say?””

Lily squeezed the rabbit.

“They said Mommy knew too much.””

Daniel felt cold.

“What else?””

Lily whispered:

“Mommy said Daddy would find out.””

The sentence destroyed him.

Because Claire had believed in him.

Even when he had not believed in himself.

“What happened next?””

Lily closed her eyes.

“I heard a crash.””

Daniel reached for her hand.

“You don’t have to continue.””

“I want to.””

She took a shaky breath.

“Then Mommy screamed.””

Daniel looked away.

A tear fell.

“I ran downstairs.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

“I saw Mommy on the floor.””

Daniel’s entire body went still.

“And Vanessa told me…”

Lily stopped.

“What?””

“She told me if I told Daddy, he would leave too.””

Silence.

“She said nobody would believe me.””

Daniel whispered:

“I would have.””

Lily looked at him.

A sad little smile appeared.

“But you didn’t.””

The words were quiet.

Not angry.

That made them hurt more.

Daniel nodded.

“You’re right.””

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

“I didn’t.””

For the first time, Lily saw him accept the truth.

And something small changed.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But maybe the beginning of trust.

Later that day, Vanessa’s lawyer attempted to delay the investigation.

They claimed Eric acted alone.

They claimed Vanessa had no involvement.

But the evidence was growing.

The notebook.

The video.

The witness statements.

And Lily’s memory.

Then Detective Harris found one more thing.

A hidden recording.

Inside Claire’s old house.

A small device Claire had placed behind the bookshelf.

The audio was damaged.

But one voice was clear.

Vanessa.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Claire’s voice answered:

“You won’t hurt my daughter.””

Vanessa laughed.

“She’s already learning.””

Daniel turned away.

He couldn’t listen anymore.

But Detective Harris stopped the recording.

“Wait.””

A different voice appeared.

Eric.

“You promised.””

Vanessa replied:

“I know.””

The room became silent.

Because they weren’t talking about Lily.

They were talking about Claire.

They had planned something.

Years ago.

And now everyone knew.

But there was one final piece missing.

The recording ended with Claire crying.

Then a sentence.

A sentence nobody expected.

A sentence that changed everything.

Claire whispered:

“Daniel knows.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Detective Harris replayed it.

Claire’s voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

But certain.

“Daniel knows.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

But deep down, he knew.

She wasn’t saying he knew about Vanessa.

She was saying something else.

May you like

Something he had forgotten.

Something hidden in his own memory.
