Chapter 7: The Night They Came Back
Daniel had spent six years believing the worst day of his life was the day Claire died.
He was wrong.
The worst day was the day he realized he had been standing beside the truth the entire time.
The police arrived within minutes after the video.
Margaret held Lily upstairs while Daniel stood in the living room, staring at the screen that had gone dark.
A picture of his daughter’s bedroom.
A threat.
A reminder.
They had been watching.
Detective Harris took the phone from him.
“Did they send anything else?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you recognize the location where the video was recorded?””
Daniel looked at the screen again.
“No.””
But then he remembered something.
The wallpaper.
The old wooden shelf behind Vanessa.
A crack in the wall.
His eyes widened.
“Wait.””
Detective Harris looked up.
“What?””
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Play it again.””
The video restarted.
Vanessa’s face appeared.
Calm.
Cold.
Behind her was a small room.
Not their house.
Not Margaret’s.
Somewhere else.
Daniel leaned closer.
“That wall.””
“What about it?””
“I know that wall.””
The detective frowned.
“Where?””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Claire’s old house.””
Nobody spoke.
Before Lily was born, before Vanessa, before all of this, Daniel and Claire had owned a small house outside town.
They sold it after Claire’s death.
Or at least, Daniel thought they had.
“I need to check something,” he said.
Detective Harris stopped him.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No?””
“You’re not going there alone.””
“I need to know.””
“You need to stay alive long enough to find out.””
The words were harsh.
But true.
An hour later, police surrounded the abandoned property.
The house looked smaller than Daniel remembered.
The paint had peeled.
The garden was overgrown.
The place where Claire had laughed.
The place where Lily had taken her first steps.
Now it looked like a ghost.
Daniel stood outside, unable to move.
Detective Harris approached.
“You okay?””
“No.””
He looked at the house.
“I thought I buried this place.””
The detective nodded.
“Sometimes things don’t stay buried.””
They entered through the back door.
The smell hit Daniel immediately.
Dust.
Mold.
Old memories.
Every step felt like walking through his past.
Then they found the room.
The one from the video.
A small bedroom.
Claire’s old office.
Daniel stopped in the doorway.
On the desk was something impossible.
A notebook.
His heart raced.
“Don’t touch it,” Detective Harris warned.
Daniel nodded.
But he knew.
That was Claire’s handwriting.
The detective photographed everything before opening it.
The first pages were ordinary.
Bills.
Notes.
Shopping lists.
Then the writing changed.
The letters became rushed.
Frantic.
*I don’t know who to trust anymore.*
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
The detective continued reading.
*Vanessa keeps saying she only wants to help, but every time she visits, Lily cries afterward.*
Another page.
*Eric is worse. Daniel doesn’t see it. He thinks everyone is exaggerating.*
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because she had tried to warn him.
Again.
And again.
The next page had only one sentence.
*If something happens to me, Lily needs to know I fought for her.*
Daniel turned away.
For years, he had believed Claire left them.
Now he realized she had been trying to protect them until the very end.
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Detective Harris raised his hand.
Silence.
Then another sound.
A floorboard.
Someone was inside.
The officers moved quickly.
Daniel stayed behind.
A door opened upstairs.
Then a figure ran.
Police chased through the hallway.
Seconds later, they caught him.
Daniel saw the person being dragged down the stairs.
And his blood went cold.
Eric.
He looked older.
Tired.
But the same smile remained.
The same smile Lily feared.
“You found it,” Eric said.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You killed Claire.””
Eric laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“Then explain.””
Eric looked at him.
“You think Vanessa and I ruined your family?””
He smiled.
“No, Daniel.””
“You did.””
The words cut deeper because Daniel knew there was truth in them.
Eric continued.
“Claire knew what kind of man you were.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“A man who wanted to believe everything was fine.””
The detective pulled Eric away.
But before he disappeared, Eric looked back.
“Ask Lily about the last thing her mother said.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Eric smiled.
May you like
“She remembers more than she told you.””
And then he was gone.
