Chapter 8: The Letter That Changed Everything
The airport was crowded when Dad arrived.
He walked quickly beside Officer Harris, carrying the photographs of the documents recovered from my bedroom.
Daniel was waiting near the arrivals entrance.
He looked nervous.
His jacket was wrinkled, and he kept checking his phone.
When he saw Dad, he stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
Dad didn't shake his hand.
“Show me the locker.””
Daniel swallowed.
“First, you need to understand something.””
“I've heard enough explanations.””
“Nicole didn't do all this because she wanted money.””
Dad stopped.
“Then why?””
Daniel looked toward the security cameras.
“Because of our mother.””
Dad stared at him.
“Your mother?””
Daniel nodded.
“She hated Rachel.””
Dad frowned.
“Why would she hate my first wife?””
“Because Rachel was the woman who married the man our mother wanted Nicole to marry.””
Dad went completely still.
Daniel continued.
“Fifteen years ago, our mother worked as a nurse at the hospital where Emily was born. She knew Rachel's family. She also knew you had money, a stable career, and a daughter.””
Dad shook his head.
“That doesn't explain anything.””
Daniel looked down.
“Our mother had been trying to arrange a marriage between Nicole and a man from her social circle. But Nicole became obsessed with you after seeing your photograph at the hospital.””
Dad's face hardened.
“Are you saying she pursued me because she wanted what Rachel had?””
Daniel nodded.
“She believed you should have been hers.””
Dad stared at him in disbelief.
“That is insane.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you help her?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I owed her money. Our mother left debts behind, and Nicole promised to pay them if I helped with the paperwork.””
Dad's voice turned cold.
“You helped steal a baby.””
Daniel began crying.
“I didn't know what she was planning at first. She told me Emily was being placed with a loving family because Rachel couldn't cope.””
“And later?””
“Later I found out the adoption documents were forged. By then, I was involved too deeply.””
Dad looked away.
Officer Harris stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, we need to know exactly what's inside that locker.””
Daniel nodded.
He led them through the terminal toward a row of storage lockers.
Locker 318.
He entered the code.
The door opened.
Inside were several folders, a small USB drive, and a sealed envelope.
Dad immediately recognized Nicole's handwriting.
He picked up the envelope.
On the front were the words:
*For Marcus. If he ever discovers the truth.*
His fingers trembled.
He opened it.
The first page was a letter from Nicole's mother.
My dearest Nicole,
You have always believed that the world owed you something. When you were a little girl, you watched other families and wanted what they had. I told you that one day you would have a husband, children, and a beautiful home.
But you must understand that wanting something does not make it yours.
Dad turned the page.
When you first told me about Marcus, I knew you had become obsessed with him. I warned you not to interfere with his marriage.
You ignored me.
You said Rachel had everything you wanted. You said her daughter should have been yours.
Dad's breathing became uneven.
The letter continued.
I helped you arrange Emily's transfer because I believed you would eventually come to your senses. I was wrong.
You were never meant to keep that child.
Dad looked up at Daniel.
“Her mother helped her?””
Daniel nodded.
“She was involved in the beginning.””
Dad continued reading.
When Marcus married you, I thought you would finally stop. You had the husband you wanted. You had a family. But you began treating Maya as an obstacle because she reminded you of Rachel.
I told you that Maya was innocent.
You told me that she would eventually learn her place.
Dad stopped reading.
His face was white.
He looked at Officer Harris.
“Can this be used as evidence?””
“We'll have it examined and preserved.””
Dad picked up the USB drive.
“What is this?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Recordings.””
“Of what?””
“Nicole and our mother. They recorded conversations about Emily.””
Officer Harris took the drive and placed it in an evidence bag.
Then Dad noticed another folder.
It contained bank transfers, forged documents, and a list of names.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*Olivia Carter.*
Beside it was a note:
Contact before March. Ensure she does not access original birth records.
Dad looked up.
“Why March?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Because Nicole planned to tell Olivia the truth herself.””
“Why?””
“She wanted Olivia to believe she had rescued her.””
Dad stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“She planned to convince Olivia that Rachel had abandoned her and that you had refused to raise her.””
Dad's hands tightened.
“She was going to turn my daughter against us?””
“Yes.””
Officer Harris suddenly received a message.
He read it and looked toward the terminal entrance.
“Mr. Bennett, we need to move.””
“Why?””
“Nicole's flight has been delayed. Airport security reports that she's still inside the terminal.””
Dad immediately stood.
“Where?””
Before the officer could answer, Daniel pointed toward a coffee shop.
“She told me she'd meet someone there.””
Dad turned.
At a table near the window sat Nicole.
She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a large handbag.
When she saw Dad, her face changed.
Then she stood.
“Marcus.””
Dad walked toward her.
“Don't move.””
She looked at Officer Harris.
“What's going on?””
The officer identified himself.
“Ms. Bennett, we'd like to ask you some questions.””
Nicole laughed.
“About what?””
Dad placed the letter on the table.
“About Emily.””
For the first time, her expression completely collapsed.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“You betrayed me?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“You did this to yourself.””
Nicole turned back toward Dad.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
She glanced around.
“Not here.””
“Where? In another storage unit? Another hidden apartment?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you, Marcus.””
Dad shook his head.
“You stole my daughter.””
“I was trying to protect her!””
“From her own mother?””
Nicole began crying.
“Rachel wasn't ready to be a mother.””
“You had no right to make that decision.””
“I gave Emily a better life!””
Dad stepped closer.
“You told her she was unwanted. You told her I abandoned her. And you took money meant for Maya while making her go hungry.””
Nicole's expression hardened.
“Maya was never supposed to be part of this.””
Dad stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Nicole looked away.
Then she whispered:
“Your first daughter was the reason I married you. Maya was the reason I stayed.””
Dad felt his stomach turn.
“Explain.””
Nicole looked directly at him.
“Because Maya knew too much.””
Dad's face went cold.
“What did she know?””
Nicole opened her mouth.
But Officer Harris stepped forward.
“Ms. Bennett, you're coming with us.””
She struggled as he reached for her arm.
“Marcus! You can't let them do this!””
Dad didn't move.
“You made your choices.””
As the officers escorted her away, she turned one final time.
“You think you're going to get your happy family now? You don't know what Maya saw!””
Dad froze.
“What did Maya see?””
Nicole smiled through her tears.
Then she was taken through the security doors.
Dad immediately called Grandma.
“Mom, keep Maya with you. Don't let anyone take her anywhere.””
Grandma sounded frightened.
“Marcus, what happened?””
“Nicole said Maya saw something.””
“What?””
“I don't know.””
He ended the call and looked at Daniel.
“What is she talking about?””
Daniel's face turned pale.
Then he said:
“Three years ago, Nicole brought Maya to see our mother. She thought Maya was asleep in the car.””
Dad stared.
“What happened?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Our mother told Maya something about Emily.””
Dad's heart pounded.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward the security doors.
“She told Maya that Nicole wasn't her real mother.””
Dad's blood ran cold.
Because that meant I might have known about Nicole's secret long before the empty plate.
May you like
And the one person who could explain what I'd heard was lying in a hospital bed.
Nicole's mother.
