Chapter 5: The Girl in the Photograph
Dad didn't tell me everything that night.
He came home carrying a photograph and looking as if he'd aged ten years in a single afternoon.
Grandma Linda noticed immediately.
“What happened?””
He placed the photograph on the kitchen table.
“Emily might be alive.””
Grandma covered her mouth.
“Your daughter?””
He nodded.
“I spoke to Rachel. She believes Nicole was involved in taking Emily from the hospital.””
Grandma sat down slowly.
“That woman has been living in your house?””
Dad didn't answer.
He looked toward the stairs.
I was standing there.
“Daddy?””
He turned.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Are you going to find another daughter?””
His expression broke.
He came toward me and knelt.
“Why would you ask that?””
I shrugged.
“Because everyone keeps talking about your first daughter.””
He held my hands.
“Maya, listen to me. Finding Emily doesn't mean I love you any less.””
I looked down.
“Sometimes people get tired of keeping me.””
Dad pulled me into his arms.
“You are my daughter. Nothing changes that.””
Grandma joined us.
“And you have me. Don't ever forget that.””
For the first time since the dinner incident, I felt something other than fear.
But the next morning brought another surprise.
At 8:07 a.m., Dad received a call from his attorney.
“Marcus, I found the woman.””
“Emily?””
“Yes. Her name is now Olivia Carter. She's twenty-one and lives in a neighboring county.””
Dad sat down.
“Is she okay?””
“She appears to be. She's working as a veterinary assistant. But there's something you need to know before you contact her.””
“What?””
“Her adoption records were sealed. Her adoptive parents were told her biological mother had died and her biological father had signed away his rights.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“I never signed anything.””
“I know. We found no valid consent document bearing your signature.””
“Then who signed it?””
The attorney paused.
“Someone used a forged authorization.””
Dad stared at the wall.
“Nicole.””
“We believe so. But we need to establish exactly what happened.””
Dad called Rachel.
Within an hour, she was on her way to meet him.
Grandma offered to stay with us.
Before leaving, Dad came upstairs.
“Maya, I need to go somewhere important today.””
“Are you going to see Emily?””
He nodded.
“Would you be scared if I brought her home someday?””
I thought about it.
“Would she be my sister?””
Dad smiled sadly.
“If she wants to be.””
I nodded.
“Then I hope she's nice.””
He kissed my forehead.
“I hope so too.””
At noon, Dad and Rachel arrived at a small veterinary clinic.
A young woman was standing behind the front desk, wearing navy-blue scrubs.
She had dark brown hair tied into a ponytail and a small birthmark near her chin.
When she looked up, Dad stopped walking.
Her eyes were exactly like his.
The young woman frowned.
“Can I help you?””
Dad swallowed.
“Are you Olivia Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Marcus.””
She looked at him politely.
“Okay.””
He took a breath.
“I think I might be your biological father.””
Olivia's expression changed.
She glanced at Rachel.
Then back at Dad.
“That's not possible.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Emily?””
The young woman's face went pale.
Nobody had called her that name since she was a baby.
“Who are you?””
Rachel began crying.
“I'm your mother.””
Olivia stepped backward.
“No.””
Dad raised his hands.
“We don't expect you to believe us immediately.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because we have reason to believe your adoption wasn't handled honestly.””
Olivia stared at him.
“My parents adopted me legally.””
“I'm not accusing them of anything,” Dad replied.
“But I never signed away my parental rights.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?””
Dad explained the hospital records, the photograph, and Nicole's connection to the maternity ward.
When he mentioned Nicole's name, Olivia went completely still.
“Nicole Bennett?””
Dad nodded.
“Did you know her?””
Olivia looked toward the back office.
Then she whispered:
“She used to visit my parents.””
Dad's heart began pounding.
“What?””
“Not often. Maybe once or twice a year. She always brought expensive gifts. My mother said Nicole was an old family friend.””
Rachel grabbed the edge of the desk.
“Did she ever tell you why?””
Olivia shook her head.
“She always called me her special girl.””
Dad looked at Rachel.
The room seemed to shrink around them.
Olivia disappeared into the back office and returned carrying a small photo album.
She opened it to a picture taken on her fifth birthday.
A younger Nicole stood beside her, holding a pink cake.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*To my beautiful Emily. You'll always belong to me.*
Dad's hands started shaking.
Rachel began crying harder.
Olivia looked between them.
“Why is that name so important?””
Dad couldn't hide the truth anymore.
“Because Emily was the name we gave you when you were born.””
Olivia sat down.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the photograph.
Then she asked the question neither parent was prepared to answer.
“Did Nicole steal me?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“I believe she did.””
Olivia covered her face.
“My whole life…”
Rachel reached toward her.
But Olivia stood abruptly.
“Please don't touch me.””
Rachel froze.
“I understand.””
Olivia picked up the photograph again.
“Why would she do this?””
Dad didn't have an answer.
Then Olivia opened another section of the album.
There were pictures of Nicole at birthdays, school events, and Christmas celebrations.
But one photograph caught Dad's attention.
It showed Nicole standing beside a man wearing a hospital identification badge.
The man was holding a folder.
Dad zoomed in on the badge.
His eyes widened.
The name was clearly visible.
*Dr. Samuel Reed.*
Rachel recognized it immediately.
“He was the doctor who delivered Emily.””
Dad looked at her.
“You know him?””
“He told me Emily died.””
Olivia turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
It was the day after Emily's supposed death.
Dad's phone rang.
His attorney.
“Marcus, don't leave the clinic yet. We found Dr. Reed. He's retired, but he's willing to speak with us.””
Dad stepped outside to answer.
“Does he know where Emily was taken?””
The attorney paused.
“He says he does.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“Where?””
“He says Nicole arranged everything. But he wants protection before he gives a formal statement.””
Dad looked through the clinic window.
Olivia was sitting between her biological parents, holding the photograph of the woman who had raised her without ever being her mother.
Then the attorney said something else.
“Marcus, there's a bigger problem. The hospital records show that Nicole didn't just arrange Emily's adoption.””
“What else?””
“She was listed as the emergency contact on Emily's original birth certificate.””
Dad went silent.
The attorney continued.
“According to Dr. Reed, Nicole claimed she was Emily's biological aunt.””
Dad stared at the street.
“How could she possibly convince a hospital of that?””
The attorney's answer was chilling.
“Because someone inside the hospital changed the records.””
Dad looked back at Olivia.
And suddenly, he understood why Nicole had spent years keeping his family separated.

She hadn't simply wanted control over his household.
She had built her entire life around a secret that could destroy everything.
