Chapter 7: The Secret Beneath My Floorboard

“Daddy, why are you looking at my rabbit?””

Dad was kneeling beside my bed, holding my old stuffed rabbit in one hand and examining the wooden floor beneath it.

His face was pale.

“Sweetheart, did Nicole ever tell you not to move this?””

I shook my head.

“Not exactly.””

“What do you mean?””

I sat on the edge of my bed.

“Sometimes she came into my room when you were at work. She would check my drawers and look under my mattress. She always told me not to touch the floorboard near the bed.””

Dad stopped moving.

“Which floorboard?””

I pointed.

“The one underneath Bunny.””

Dad carefully moved the stuffed rabbit.

The wooden board looked ordinary, except for a small scratch near one corner.

He pressed it.

Nothing happened.

Then he tried lifting it with his fingers.

It moved slightly.

Grandma Linda appeared in the doorway.

“Marcus?””

He looked up.

“Mom, call my attorney. Tell him we found something.””

Grandma immediately reached for her phone.

Dad pulled the floorboard upward.

Beneath it was a narrow space containing a plastic envelope, several photographs, and a small metal box.

My stomach tightened.

“What's that?””

Dad didn't answer immediately.

He removed the plastic envelope first.

Inside were copies of hospital records.

The first document showed my birth date.

The second showed Emily's.

The third was an authorization form transferring Emily to another hospital.

Dad's eyes moved across the page.

Then he stopped.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Marcus Bennett.*

His own name.

But the signature wasn't his.

“That's a forgery,” he whispered.

Grandma leaned closer.

“Are you certain?””

“I've never signed this.””

He examined the next page.

It was a letter addressed to Rachel.

Your daughter has been transferred into safe care. You should not attempt to contact the hospital again. Any further inquiry may result in legal consequences.

Rachel's name appeared at the bottom.

But the handwriting wasn't hers.

Dad's hands began shaking.

Then he opened the metal box.

Inside were two hospital identification bracelets.

One read:

*BABY BENNETT — FEMALE.*

The other read:

*BABY CARTER — FEMALE.*

I stared at them.

“Why are there two?””

Dad looked at me.

“Because someone wanted to keep records of both babies.””

Grandma picked up a photograph.

It showed Nicole holding a newborn in a hospital room.

On the back was a date.

And underneath the date were the words:

*One family. Two daughters. One secret.*

Dad turned the photograph over again.

“She's been keeping evidence all these years.””

Grandma looked horrified.

“Why would she hide this in Maya's room?””

Dad's answer came slowly.

“Because she thought nobody would ever search here. And because she wanted to control what Maya knew.””

I looked at the box.

“Was Nicole going to hurt Emily?””

Dad immediately came toward me.

“No, sweetheart. You don't need to carry that fear.””

“But she took my food.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“She said I had to earn dinner.””

Dad knelt in front of me.

“You never have to earn food. You never have to earn love. Do you understand?””

I nodded.

He kissed my forehead.

Then his phone rang.

It was his attorney.

“Marcus, we need those documents secured immediately. Do not remove anything else until we arrange proper documentation.””

“We've already found the box.””

“Photograph everything. The authorities need to establish where it was discovered.””

Dad did exactly that.

While he was photographing the documents, Grandma examined the remaining papers.

Suddenly, she gasped.

“Marcus.””

He looked over.

“What?””

She held up a folded letter.

“This is addressed to Nicole.””

Dad opened it.

The letter was from Daniel.

*Nicole, I cannot keep doing this. You promised me the arrangement would end when Emily turned eighteen. You told me Maya would never know.

But now you're taking money from the little girl too. This has gone too far.*

The letter was dated three years earlier.

Dad read it twice.

Then he found another page attached to it.

If you don't stop, I'll tell Marcus everything. He deserves to know that the adoption was never legal and that you used his daughter to build the family you wanted.

Dad lowered the letter.

“Daniel knew.””

Grandma nodded.

“And he helped her.””

Dad looked toward the window.

“Then he can explain everything to the authorities.””

An hour later, the attorney arrived with an investigator.

They carefully documented the box, photographed the documents, and secured the original papers.

The investigator, Officer Harris, spoke gently to me.

“Maya, did you know these things were underneath your floor?””

I shook my head.

“Did Nicole ever tell you to keep something secret?””

I hesitated.

Then I remembered something.

“She told me that if I ever found papers in my room, I should throw them away.””

Officer Harris exchanged a glance with Dad.

“What papers?””

“I don't know. She said they were grown-up things.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Officer Harris wrote something down.

“Thank you, Maya. You've helped us.””

After they left, Dad received another call.

This time, it was Daniel.

“Marcus, I need to talk to you.””

Dad put the call on speaker.

“Then talk.””

Daniel sounded frightened.

“Nicole knows you've found the box.””

“How?””

“She called me. She said someone had entered the house.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Where is she?””

“At the airport.””

“What time is her flight?””

“Six in the morning.””

Dad looked at the clock.

It was already past four.

“She's leaving tonight?””

“She's trying to.””

“Why?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she knows the adoption records can be used to expose her.””

Dad leaned closer to the phone.

“Daniel, what else do you know?””

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said:

“Nicole has another set of documents. The originals. And she's planning to destroy them before she boards.””

Dad looked at the investigator's business card.

“Where are they?””

“In a locker at the airport.””

Grandma covered her mouth.

Dad stood.

“Which locker?””

Daniel gave him the number.

Then he whispered something that made Dad's expression change completely.

“Marcus, the documents aren't the only thing in there.””

“What else?””

“A letter from Nicole's mother.””

Dad frowned.

“What does it say?””

Daniel's voice broke.

“It explains why Nicole chose your family in the first place.””

The call ended.

Dad looked at the clock.

Then he looked at me.

“I need to go somewhere, sweetheart.””

I grabbed his hand.

“Please don't let her come back.””

He squeezed my fingers.

“She won't hurt you again. I promise.””

And as Dad left with the investigator, Grandma held me close.

Neither of us knew that the letter in the airport locker would reveal a secret even more devastating than the stolen adoption.

May you like

Nicole hadn't chosen our family by accident.

She had been looking for my father for fifteen years.
