The Daughter He Almost Lost / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Truth Evelyn Buried

Ethan drove home without remembering the road.

The folder sat beside him.

Heavy.

Like it contained a piece of his family’s soul.

When he entered the house, Claire was waiting.

She stood immediately.

“What happened?””

He placed the folder on the table.

“She had another child.””

Claire went still.

“Another daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Vanessa?””

“No.””

Claire frowned.

“What?””

Ethan opened the file.

“There was another baby.””

Claire looked at the papers.

Her expression changed as she read.

“Oh my God.””

He watched her.

“You knew?””

“No.””

Her voice was barely there.

“But I knew there was something missing.””

He sat down.

“How?””

“Because your father wrote me a letter.””

Ethan looked up.

“What letter?””

Claire hesitated.

“I burned it.””

His face changed.

“You what?””

“I thought it would put us in danger.””

“Claire.””

“I was pregnant with Lily. I was terrified.””

She covered her face.

“I thought your mother was watching everything.””

Ethan stood.

“You had a letter from my father and you burned it?””

“I memorized it.””

“Then tell me.””

Claire looked at him.

“He said your mother had spent years trying to create a family that looked perfect from the outside.””

Ethan said nothing.

“He said Vanessa wasn’t the first person she abandoned.””

The room became silent.

“Who was the first?””

Claire looked down.

“The baby from that night.””

A knock interrupted them.

Both turned.

Ethan froze.

Because he knew before opening the door.

Evelyn.

She stood outside.

No makeup.

No perfect clothes.

No image.

Just a woman who looked exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.””

Ethan didn’t move.

“You don’t get to walk back in here.””

“I know.””

That surprised him.

Evelyn looked past him.

At Claire.

“I owe both of you the truth.””

Claire laughed quietly.

“Now?””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

Ethan stepped aside.

Not because he forgave her.

Because he needed answers.

She entered slowly.

And for the first time, she looked like a guest in the house she once controlled.

“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””

Ethan stared.

“But you hurt Claire.””

“Yes.””

The admission shocked him.

“I was wrong.””

Claire looked at her.

“You almost destroyed our family.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.””

“Why?””

Evelyn sat down.

“Because I saw myself in you.””

Claire frowned.

“What?””

“You had a daughter.””

Her voice cracked.

“You had everything I lost.””

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

“When I had my first child, I was twenty-seven. I was terrified.””

“Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

“You abandoned her.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

“My parents told me nobody would love a woman with a child. They convinced me I had ruined my future.””

Ethan whispered:

“So you believed them.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“I met your father.””

Her expression softened.

“He made me believe I could start over.””

A pause.

“Then I became pregnant with another child.””

Ethan looked at the file.

“The baby who died.””

Evelyn nodded.

“She was born sick.””

“What happened?””

Her eyes filled.

“She died.””

The room stayed quiet.

“But the hospital records say—”

“I know.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because I changed them.””

Ethan froze.

“Why?””

“Because I couldn’t survive losing another child.””

Claire stared.

“What are you saying?””

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“The baby didn’t die.””

The air vanished.

“She lived.””

Ethan couldn’t speak.

“Where is she?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.””

The answer was terrifying.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“I gave her away.””

Claire stepped back.

“You gave away your own daughter?””

“I thought I was saving her.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I was told she would have a better life.””

“By who?””

Her face changed.

And Ethan knew.

The answer mattered.

“Mom.””

She whispered:

“Your father.””

The room froze.

“My father told you to give away your daughter?””

“No.””

She looked at the file.

“He helped me hide what happened.””

“Why?””

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the photograph of Vanessa.

“Because that child was never supposed to exist.””

Ethan felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“She wasn’t mine.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Your father was hiding something too.””

A phone rang.

Everyone turned.

Claire looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A voice came through.

A woman.

Crying.

“Is this Claire Bennett?””

Claire went pale.

“Yes.””

The woman whispered:

“I think I’m your husband’s sister.””

Ethan grabbed the phone.

“Who is this?””

The woman said:

“My name is Anna.””

May you like

A pause.

“And I was the baby your mother gave away.””
