Chapter 6: The Original Record
Ethan didn’t sleep.
He sat beside Lily’s crib until sunrise.
Watching his daughter breathe.
Watching the tiny rise and fall of her chest.
Trying to understand how a person so small could be surrounded by so many secrets.
Claire sat on the floor beside him.
Neither of them spoke for a long time.
Finally Ethan said:
“How long have you known?””
Claire looked exhausted.
“About the birth record?””
“Yes.””
“Three weeks.””
He closed his eyes.
“Three weeks.””
“I was trying to find the truth before I told you.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words hurt her.
He saw it.
But he couldn’t take them back.
Because everyone had been protecting him.
And somehow that protection had destroyed everything.
Claire whispered:
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That you would choose them.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Them?””
“Your mother. Your family.””
He shook his head.
“I chose you.””
Claire looked down.
“Did you?””
The question hurt.
Because he didn’t know.
Not anymore.
Claire stood and walked to the dresser.
She opened the bottom drawer.
From inside, she pulled a small envelope.
“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do.””
Ethan took it.
Inside was a copy of a hospital record.
Different from the one Evelyn had hidden.
He read.
Then read again.
“What am I looking at?””
Claire sat down.
“The original birth registration.””
His eyes moved across the page.
Mother:
Claire Bennett.
Father:
Ethan Mercer.
Then below it—
Previous record attached.
He frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Claire took a breath.
“It means someone changed Lily’s file.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Ethan already knew.
His mother.
But why?
Why would Evelyn change a birth record?
Why would she attack Claire?
Why would she hide Vanessa?
The questions kept multiplying.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A signature.
At the bottom.
Not Evelyn’s.
Not Claire’s.
Someone else’s.
“Who signed this?””
Claire looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“That’s the problem.””
Ethan stared at the signature.
A name.
A name he had never heard before.
But Vanessa had.
Because when Ethan showed her the paper, her face changed.
“You know this person?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“I know the name.””
“Who is it?””
She looked at Evelyn’s old photograph on the table.
Then back at him.
“The person who helped your mother erase me.””
A cold silence followed.
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your father.””
Ethan stopped.
“My father died.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Vanessa looked at him sadly.
“Your father’s death certificate was real.””
She paused.
“But the life he showed you wasn’t.””
Ethan felt dizzy.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa opened the folder again.
She pulled out another document.
“This is why I came tonight.””
She placed it in front of him.
A private investigator’s report.
Photos.
Dates.
Locations.
And one picture.
A man Ethan recognized immediately.
His father.
Standing outside a house.
With Evelyn.
And a little girl.
Vanessa.
Alive.
Years after Ethan’s father supposedly left.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
His hands went cold.
“My father knew.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He always knew.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Her eyes softened.
“Because he was afraid of your mother.””
Ethan looked upstairs toward Lily’s room.
The whole house felt different now.
Like the walls had been listening.
Like every happy memory had another version hidden underneath.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
But something made him answer.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Shaking.
Terrified.
“Ethan Mercer?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t know me.””
His grip tightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“I worked at the hospital the night your daughter was born.””
Ethan stood.
“What?””
The woman breathed heavily.
“I should have spoken years ago.””
His heart raced.
“About Lily?””
Silence.
Then the words that changed everything.
“Your daughter wasn’t the only baby born that night.””
Ethan felt the room disappear.
“What are you saying?””
The woman whispered:
“Someone switched the records.””
A pause.
“And Ethan…”
May you like
Her voice cracked.
“Lily was never supposed to come home with you.””
