Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Family
Ethan spent the next hour trying to convince himself he was still awake.
Because nightmares made more sense.
Nightmares had rules.
They ended.
This didn’t.
His mother sat across from him in the living room.
His wife sat beside him.
Vanessa stood near the fireplace.
Three women.
Three versions of the truth.
And Ethan had no idea which one belonged to him.
The police had left after taking statements.
They promised to follow up.
But Ethan barely heard them.
All he could hear was Claire’s voice.
“Your mother was watching us.””
“Explain.””
Claire folded her hands together.
She looked like she had been preparing for this conversation for weeks.
“I started noticing things after Lily was born.””
Ethan frowned.
“What things?””
“Little things.””
“That doesn’t mean anything.””
“I know.””
She nodded.
“That’s why I ignored them.””
She looked down.
“Until I found the camera.””
Ethan went still.
“What camera?””
“In the nursery.””
His face changed.
“What?””
Claire swallowed.
“Behind the wooden star decoration.””
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
The nursery.
Their nursery.
The room he built.
The room where his mother attacked his wife.
“She installed a camera?””
Evelyn immediately spoke.
“I did not.””
Claire looked at her.
“You did.””
“No.””
“I found the footage.””
Ethan looked at Claire.
“What footage?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“Your mother talking to someone.””
Evelyn’s expression shifted.
“What someone?””
Claire looked at her.
“You know.””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa quietly said:
“Her lawyer.””
Ethan turned.
“What?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She was trying to build a case.””
“A case for what?””
Claire whispered:
“Full custody.””
The words were almost impossible to hear.
Ethan stood.
“No.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“No.””
His mother’s face hardened.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“Were you trying to take Lily away from us?””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
Ethan stared.
“From who?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
And that silence told him everything.
“From Claire?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Yes.””
Claire closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Ethan felt something inside him break.
Not because he believed his mother.
Because he realized she truly believed herself.
That was worse.
“You thought you were saving my daughter.””
“I knew what Claire was capable of.””
Ethan turned sharply.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked at Claire.
“Tell him.””
Claire’s face tightened.
“No.””
Ethan looked at his wife.
“Tell me what?””
Claire shook her head.
“Not like this.””
“Then when?””
The question hurt both of them.
Because they both knew there had been too many secrets.
Too much waiting.
Claire whispered:
“I had a daughter before Lily.””
Ethan froze.
The room disappeared.
“What?””
Claire looked down.
“She died.””
The anger in him stopped.
Completely.
“When?””
“Five years ago.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because every time I tried…”
Her voice broke.
“I thought you would look at me differently.””
Ethan stared.
“Claire.””
“I was pregnant before we met.””
She wiped her face.
“My daughter was born with a heart condition.””
The silence became heavier.
“She died when she was four months old.””
Ethan sat slowly.
His anger disappeared.
Leaving only confusion.
“Why would your mother use that against you?””
Claire looked toward Evelyn.
“Because she found out.””
Evelyn’s face remained cold.
“I found out Claire had a history of losing children.””
Ethan stood again.
“That’s not what happened.””
“I wanted to make sure Lily was safe.””
“You attacked her.””
“I lost control.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You almost killed me.””
Evelyn looked away.
For once, she had no answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“This is what she does.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
“She turns fear into control.””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
“She did it to me.””
The room went quiet.
“She told everyone I was better off gone.””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“She convinced herself abandoning me was love.””
Ethan looked at his mother.
And suddenly he saw the pattern.
Not one mistake.
Not one bad choice.
A lifetime of decisions disguised as protection.
Evelyn stood.
“You’re all against me.””
“No,” Ethan said.
His voice was calm now.
“That’s the problem.””
She stared.
“What?””
“You think this is about everyone hurting you.””
He shook his head.
“It’s about everyone you hurt.””
For the first time, Evelyn looked old.
Not sixty-one.
Older.
Tired.
She grabbed her coat.
“Fine.””
Ethan frowned.
“Where are you going?””
“You don’t want me here.””
“No.””
The answer surprised even him.
“I don’t.””
Evelyn stared at him.
Then smiled faintly.
A cold, familiar smile.
“Before you decide I’m the villain…”
She walked toward the door.
“Ask Claire why she lied about where Lily was born.””
Ethan froze.
Claire’s face changed instantly.
Evelyn opened the door.
“And ask her what name was on the original birth certificate.””
The door slammed.
Ethan turned slowly.
“Claire.””
She didn’t speak.
That scared him.
Because Claire had finally stopped defending herself.
“Claire…”
She looked at him.
May you like
And whispered:
“Lily wasn’t born at the hospital you think she was.””
