Chapter 9: Claire's Last Lie

The next morning, Detective Hale asked me to come to the station alone.

Natalie wanted to accompany me, but Andrea advised that I should cooperate with the investigation while keeping my sister informed of where I was going.

I arrived at 9:05.

Detective Hale was waiting in the same interview room where I'd first shown him Rachel's photograph.

He placed a folder on the table.

"We've made progress identifying the company that transferred money to an account associated with Dr. Vale," he said.

"The transaction is real, but we still need to establish why it occurred.""

"Does Damon own the company?""

"He's listed as a director. We haven't established whether he personally authorized this payment.""

I looked at the folder.

"Could it be connected to the storage unit?""

"Possibly. The payment was made shortly before someone attempted to cancel the rental.""

My hands tightened.

"Then he knew we'd found it.""

"That's one possibility.""

Detective Hale opened the folder.

Inside was a printed email recovered from an account linked to the company.

The subject line read:

*VAULT — FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.*

The message was brief.

The woman has contacted Emily. The original records must be secured before the police identify the remaining parties.

The sender's name was partially obscured by a corrupted file.

But the signature at the bottom remained visible.

*C. Bennett.*

I stared at it.

"Claire sent this?""

"The account is associated with her name. We need additional evidence before we can establish who wrote the message.""

I looked up.

"Why are you being so careful?""

"Because a name on an email doesn't automatically establish who sent it. We're investigating a serious matter, and we need evidence that will stand up to scrutiny.""

I nodded slowly.

He was right.

I had spent days wanting the truth to arrive as a single, undeniable confession.

Instead, every answer opened another question.

Then Detective Hale slid a second photograph across the table.

It showed Claire entering a small apartment building three days earlier.

A man followed her inside.

The image was grainy, but I recognized him immediately.

Damon.

"When was this taken?"" I asked.

"Three days ago.""

"Where is the building?""

"Outside the city.""

"Who lives there?""

"We're still checking.""

I studied the photograph.

Claire was holding a paper bag. Damon had one hand on the small of her back.

They looked comfortable.

Familiar.

Not like two people who'd made a single terrible mistake.

Like two people who had been doing this for years.

"Can I ask you something?"" I said.

"Of course.""

"Do you think Claire was ever really my friend?""

Detective Hale leaned back.

"I can't tell you what she felt. But I can tell you that we have evidence suggesting she had contact with your husband long before you knew about his previous marriage.""

The words hurt more than I expected.

I remembered our first meeting at college.

Claire had spilled coffee on my notebook, apologized a dozen times, and invited me to lunch to make up for it.

I'd thought it was the beginning of a friendship.

Now I wondered whether she'd already known my name.

After leaving the station, I went to Andrea's office and told her about the email and photograph.

She advised me to avoid direct confrontation until the police had determined what evidence they could safely collect.

"But I need to know why she did it," I said.

"You may never get a truthful answer from her," Andrea replied.

"And even if she tells you something, we will still need to verify it.""

I knew she was right.

But I also knew Claire had something she wanted to protect.

And I suspected she would reveal more if she believed she was about to lose it.

That afternoon, I sent her a message.

*I know about Victoria. We need to talk.*

She replied within thirty seconds.

*Emily, please. I can explain everything.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Come to the old greenhouse at six. Alone. I swear I'll tell you the truth.*

The greenhouse stood behind an abandoned garden center on the edge of town. Claire and I had gone there years earlier to buy plants for my first apartment.

It was where she'd once told me that friendship meant never having to earn forgiveness.

I showed the messages to Andrea and Detective Hale.

They strongly advised against meeting Claire alone. After discussing the risks, we agreed that any meeting would take place with the police aware of the location and prepared to intervene if necessary.

I arrived shortly before six.

The greenhouse was cold and damp. Broken panes of glass let the wind whistle through the frame, and dead vines hung from the ceiling.

Claire stood beside a rusted worktable.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was tied back, and she'd removed her engagement ring.

When she saw me, her eyes filled with tears.

"Emily.""

I stopped several feet away.

"Tell me the truth.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"I never wanted you to get hurt.""

"Then why did you sleep with my husband?""

Her face crumpled.

"Because I was stupid. Because I was selfish. Because Damon made me believe he loved me.""

"You were engaged to Owen.""

"I know.""

"You were my best friend.""

"I know.""

"You hid in my closet while I was pregnant.""

She covered her mouth.

"I panicked.""

I stared at her.

"You panicked? Claire, you had time to take off your clothes, hide in my closet, and let my husband lie to my face.""

She lowered her hands.

"I deserve that.""

"No. You deserve to answer my questions.""

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she reached into her coat and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"This is why I contacted Dr. Vale.""

I didn't take it.

"Explain.""

Claire unfolded the paper herself.

It was a photocopy of a medical authorization form.

My name appeared at the top.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

And beneath it was Claire's name.

"I signed it," she whispered.

"Damon told me it was temporary. He said he needed to help you because you were overwhelmed.""

"You forged my signature.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I thought he was trying to protect you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"From what?""

Claire looked toward the broken windows.

"From the truth about your pregnancy.""

My entire body went still.

"What truth?""

She looked at me, and for the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.

"Before you became pregnant, Damon told me he was worried about your health. He said you had a medical condition you didn't know about. He claimed Dr. Vale had information that could help.""

"What condition?""

"I don't know. He never told me.""

"Then why did you help him?""

"Because he showed me documents. He told me your family had hidden something from you.""

I shook my head.

"You're lying.""

"I wish I were.""

She held out the paper.

"I thought I was giving him permission to help you. I didn't know he was using it to change your appointments.""

I didn't take the document.

"Why did you keep seeing him?""

Claire's eyes filled again.

"Because he told me if I stopped, he'd expose what I'd done. He said he'd tell Owen I'd been stealing from our joint account. He threatened to ruin my life.""

"You could have told me.""

"I know.""

"You could have gone to the police.""

"I know.""

"You chose him anyway.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The simplicity of the answer silenced me.

Then I asked the question that had haunted me since I saw the hospital photograph.

"What happened to Rachel?""

Claire closed her eyes.

"I helped Damon move her.""

My stomach dropped.

"Move her where?""

"To a private facility outside the city. She was alive when we left her there.""

"Was she free to leave?""

Claire began to cry.

"No.""

I stepped back.

"You helped imprison her?""

"I told myself it was temporary. Damon said she needed treatment. He said she was dangerous and might hurt herself.""

"Did you believe him?""

"At first.""

"And later?""

She looked down.

"Later, I knew he was lying.""

The greenhouse seemed to shrink around us.

"Where is she now?""

"I don't know.""

"You're her friend. You helped her disappear. You must know something.""

"I know the name of the facility. I know the doctor who signed the papers. But I don't know where Rachel went after she escaped.""

My heart pounded.

"She escaped?""

Claire nodded.

"About two years ago. Damon thought she'd died because someone told him she was gone. I don't know who helped her.""

"Victoria?""

Claire looked at me sharply.

"Who told you that name?""

"Answer me.""

She gripped the worktable.

"Victoria was the first woman who tried to expose him. Rachel helped her. Then I helped Rachel. Then I betrayed them both.""

"Why?""

"Because Damon threatened Owen.""

I stared at her.

"Your fiancé?""

Claire nodded.

"He said he'd destroy Owen's business. He had documents that made it look like Owen had committed fraud. I thought if I did what Damon wanted, he'd leave Owen alone.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to.""

Her confession sounded pathetic.

But the devastation in her face was real.

Then Claire looked at my stomach.

"Emily, there's something else. Something I should have told you before you ever married him.""

I waited.

She swallowed.

"Your pregnancy wasn't the reason Damon started planning this. He had already chosen you years before you met him.""

My blood ran cold.

"Why me?""

Claire reached into her coat again and pulled out an old photograph.

It showed a younger Damon standing beside a woman I didn't recognize.

The woman held a little girl in her arms.

On the back, in faded handwriting, were four words.

*The daughter we lost.*

I looked at Claire.

"Who is that child?""

Her lips trembled.

"Victoria's daughter.""

I felt the world tilt.

"Rachel told me Victoria was pregnant when she disappeared.""

"She was.""

"Then what happened to the baby?""

Claire stared at me.

"The baby survived.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Where is she?""

Claire looked directly into my eyes.

Then she said the words that shattered every remaining piece of my understanding.

"Emily, the baby Damon lost wasn't Victoria's only child.""

She pressed the photograph into my hand.

"The little girl in this picture is your daughter.""

I stared at the photograph.

The child looked about three years old.

Dark curls. Round cheeks. One hand wrapped around Damon's finger.

On the back, beneath the faded words, someone had written a date.

A date from more than twenty years earlier.

I looked up at Claire.

"That's impossible.""

She shook her head.

"No, Emily. What's impossible is what Damon has been telling you about your own family.""

Before I could ask another question, the greenhouse door slammed open.

Detective Hale's voice rang through the building.

"Claire Bennett, step away from the table.""

Claire flinched.

She turned toward me, tears streaming down her face.

"Emily, please. Before they take me away, you need to know one more thing.""

She reached for my hand.

"The reason Damon married you wasn't just because of your family.""

Her voice broke.

"It was because he believed you were the only person who could lead him to the daughter he'd lost.""

And as the detective moved toward us, Claire whispered the name of the woman who had given birth to me.

*Victoria Shaw.*
