Chapter 5: The Woman Who Never Died

I called the number back.

It was disconnected.

I tried again, then a third time, but every attempt ended with the same automated message.

Natalie took my phone from my hand.

"Don't chase the call. Whoever she is, we need to verify what she's telling us.""

"She knew about the baby.""

"So does Claire. So does Damon. That doesn't prove she was Rachel.""

I looked at the hospital photograph.

The woman in the bed had the same narrow chin and dark eyes as the missing woman in the newspaper.

And Damon was standing beside her.

"She was alive when that picture was taken.""

"Yes," Natalie said carefully.

"But we don't know when it was taken, where it was taken, or who sent it.""

I hated how reasonable she sounded.

I hated even more that I needed her to be right.

At dawn, I called the police department listed in Rachel's missing-person article. I explained that I'd found information suggesting Rachel Whitmore might still be alive and asked how to submit the photograph.

The officer who answered transferred me to a detective.

"Do you know Rachel Whitmore personally?"" he asked.

"No. I believe her former husband is my husband.""

A pause.

"Your husband is Damon Reed?""

"Yes.""

The detective asked me to repeat the name.

Then he said, "Mrs. Reed, I need you to come in and speak with us.""

"Can you tell me why?""

"I can tell you that Rachel's case was never officially closed.""

My stomach tightened.

"Was Damon suspected of hurting her?""

"I can't discuss the details over the phone.""

I glanced at Natalie.

She was already reaching for her keys.

"We'll be there," I said.

Before leaving, I took the ultrasound envelope from my purse. I couldn't explain why I needed it with me, but the picture had become a symbol of everything I no longer understood.

Was it my daughter?

Had someone used a genuine scan to make me believe my pregnancy was being monitored?

Or had Damon arranged the entire thing to keep me from asking questions about the missing records?

I needed answers.

At the station, Detective Marcus Hale met us in a small interview room. He was in his fifties, with silver hair and tired eyes. He placed a recorder on the table and asked permission to begin.

I agreed.

Then I showed him the hospital photograph.

He studied it for a long time.

"Where did you get this?""

"An anonymous message.""

"Do you still have the number?""

I handed him my phone.

He copied the information and examined the image.

"This photograph isn't in our original case file," he said.

"Does that mean it's fake?""

"No. It means we'll need to authenticate it.""

He asked me about Damon, our marriage, and the events of the previous afternoon. I told him about the closet, the camisole, the notebook, and the altered medical authorization.

When I mentioned Claire, his pen stopped moving.

"Claire Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"How long have you known her?""

"Twelve years.""

He exchanged a glance with another officer standing near the door.

"What?"" I asked.

Detective Hale closed his notebook.

"Claire Bennett was interviewed during the original investigation into Rachel Whitmore's disappearance.""

The room went quiet.

"Why?""

"She knew Rachel.""

I felt sick.

"How well?""

"That's something we'll need to establish. At the time, she told investigators she had met Rachel socially through Damon.""

"She told me she met Damon years after college.""

The detective wrote that down.

"Did your husband ever tell you he was married?""

"No.""

"Did you know about Rachel before today?""

"No.""

He leaned forward.

"Mrs. Reed, I want you to understand something. A missing-person investigation can involve conflicting accounts, incomplete evidence, and circumstances that aren't immediately clear. We aren't going to assume your husband committed a crime simply because his former wife disappeared.""

"I understand.""

"But I do want to know why someone has now contacted you with information about her.""

He asked whether I had any reason to believe Damon might be monitoring my communications.

I thought of his immediate reaction to the notebook.

His insistence that I stop speaking to Natalie.

The messages about keeping our home happy.

"Yes," I said.

Detective Hale slid a card across the table.

"If you receive another message, preserve it. Don't delete anything. And if you feel threatened, contact us immediately.""

Before we left, he asked me to sign a statement confirming that I'd provided the photograph voluntarily.

I signed it.

My hand was steadier than I expected.

For the first time, I wasn't the wife being told to calm down.

I was someone making a record.

Outside, Natalie hugged me.

"We're going to get through this.""

I nodded, but my eyes were fixed on the parking lot.

Damon's black SUV sat across the street.

He was standing beside it, talking to a man in a gray coat.

When he saw me, his face hardened.

The man followed his gaze, then stepped away.

Damon crossed the street.

"What are you doing here?"" he demanded.

I felt Natalie move closer to me.

"Visiting a friend.""

"Don't lie to me.""

"Then don't ask questions you don't want answered.""

His eyes flicked toward the police station.

"You talked to them.""

"Yes.""

"About Rachel?""

I didn't answer.

He let out a bitter laugh.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

"Then explain it to me.""

He stepped closer.

"Rachel was unstable. She disappeared, and the police couldn't find her. Claire helped me through that nightmare. That's all.""

"Why did you tell me you'd never been married?""

His jaw tightened.

"Because I didn't want our relationship defined by something that happened years ago.""

"She was your wife.""

"And she destroyed my life.""

The words came out with such venom that I instinctively stepped back.

Damon noticed.

For a moment, his expression softened.

"Emily, please. I know you're scared. I know someone is feeding you lies. Come home with me, and we'll sort this out privately.""

"No.""

He stared at me.

"What did you say?""

"I'm not coming home with you.""

His face changed.

He looked past me toward Natalie, then toward the station entrance.

"You're making a mistake.""

"Maybe.""

I took a breath.

"But it's my mistake to make.""

He walked away without another word.

That evening, I stayed at Natalie's apartment. We contacted a lawyer she knew through work and arranged a consultation for the following morning.

At 9:12 p.m., my phone rang.

This time, the caller ID displayed a blocked number.

I answered.

"Rachel?""

"Yes.""

"How do I know it's really you?""

"You don't. Not yet.""

Her honesty surprised me.

"Then prove it.""

She was silent for a moment.

"On the night Damon and I married, he gave me a silver locket. Inside was a photograph of his mother. He said it was the only picture he had of her smiling.""

I remembered Damon showing me that locket years later.

He'd told me his mother had given it to him before she died.

I gripped the phone.

"What happened to you?""

"I tried to leave him.""

"Why?""

"Because I found out what he was doing.""

"What was he doing?""

"Changing medical records. Moving money. Making people believe that women who disagreed with him were mentally unstable.""

My stomach turned.

"Claire helped him?""

"At first, she helped me.""

I sat upright.

"What?""

"Claire was my friend before she became his accomplice. She helped me collect evidence. Then Damon found out.""

"Why would she turn against you?""

"Because he offered her something she wanted more than the truth.""

"What?""

Rachel's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your life.""

I felt cold all over.

"What does that mean?""

"Claire didn't become your best friend by accident, Emily. She was watching you long before you met Damon.""

I looked at Natalie.

She mouthed, Put it on speaker.

I did.

Rachel continued.

"She knew where you worked. She knew your family. She knew what kind of man you wanted to marry. And when Damon chose you, Claire made sure you never saw what he really was.""

My hands began to shake.

"Why?""

"Because Damon needed a wife people would believe was happy. A woman with a respectable family. A woman whose friends would swear he was a good husband.""

"You're saying my entire marriage was planned?""

"I'm saying I don't know how much of it was planned. But I know this: Claire had access to your medical records before you became pregnant.""

I thought of the forged authorization.

The vitamins.

The fake ultrasound.

Then Rachel said, "Emily, there's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

"When I disappeared, I wasn't alone.""

I could hear her breathing.

"There was another woman with me. A woman who had already been married to Damon before I was.""

My mouth went dry.

"That's impossible.""

"No," Rachel whispered.

"It isn't.""

May you like

She paused.

"Her name was Victoria. And she was the one who taught Damon how to make a woman disappear without anyone believing she'd been taken.""
