Chapter 7: The Vault Beneath My Wedding Ring

For five years, I'd worn Damon's family ring without questioning where it came from.

I'd worn it while we painted the nursery, while we celebrated our anniversaries, and while he held my hand during the first ultrasound appointment he claimed he'd been too busy to attend.

Now the initials inside it belonged to a woman whose disappearance had never been explained.

Victoria Shaw.

My husband's first wife.

I placed the ring on Natalie's kitchen table.

"Tell me this is a coincidence," I whispered.

Natalie photographed the engraving again.

"I can't. But we're not going to assume the numbers lead to anything until we verify them.""

She called Andrea, our lawyer, who advised us not to access anyone else's property without permission or legal authority. If the numbers corresponded to a storage unit, we could contact the facility, establish what access was lawful, and let the police investigate anything connected to the missing women.

Before we could make another call, my phone rang.

Rachel.

"I found something," she said without greeting me.

"What?""

"An old photograph of Victoria wearing the same ring.""

I looked at the gold band.

"How can you be sure?""

"Because I took the photograph. We were sitting in a diner outside town. She'd just told me she was leaving Damon.""

Rachel sent the image.

Victoria sat in a booth beside a window, her left hand wrapped around a coffee mug. The gold band was unmistakable.

But something else caught my attention.

A key lay on the table beside her.

Its metal tag carried the same number engraved inside my ring.

I enlarged the photograph.

"Rachel, did Victoria tell you what the key opened?""

"She said it was somewhere she could keep things safe.""

"Documents?""

"Documents, recordings, photographs. She was terrified Damon would destroy everything she'd collected.""

My mouth went dry.

"Did she mention a vault?""

Rachel hesitated.

"She used that word once. She said, 'If the truth has to wait, I'll put it in the vault.'' I didn't understand what she meant.""

Natalie was already searching storage facilities in the county where Damon had grown up.

The number on the ring matched an old unit identifier associated with a facility that had changed ownership twice.

The manager agreed to speak with us after Andrea contacted him and explained that we had information potentially relevant to an ongoing missing-person investigation.

We met him that afternoon.

The facility sat behind a row of industrial buildings, surrounded by a chain-link fence and security cameras. Inside his office, the manager, Mr. Collins, studied the photograph of the ring.

"These units were renumbered when we changed systems," he said.

"The old number doesn't correspond to a current rental.""

"Can you check the archived records?"" Natalie asked.

"I can check what we're permitted to disclose.""

He typed for several minutes.

Then he stopped.

"This identifier is associated with a unit that was rented under the name Victoria Shaw.""

My knees nearly gave way.

"Is it still there?"" I asked.

"I can't tell you who currently controls the contents without reviewing the ownership and access records.""

"Could the police investigate it?""

"Absolutely. If there's a possible connection to a missing-person case, they can contact us through the appropriate channels.""

Natalie immediately called Detective Hale.

He arrived less than an hour later.

After reviewing the photograph, the ring, and Rachel's information, he spoke privately with the manager. We weren't allowed to enter the unit ourselves, but Detective Hale explained that the department would pursue the necessary authorization to examine it.

While we waited, my phone vibrated.

A message from Damon.

*Where are you?*

I didn't answer.

Another arrived.

*Emily, I know you've been talking to Rachel.*

My stomach tightened.

A third message appeared.

*Whatever she tells you about Victoria, she's lying. She killed the woman I loved.*

I showed Natalie.

She stared at the screen.

"He's trying to get ahead of whatever's in that unit.""

My phone rang before I could respond.

Damon.

I answered with the detective standing nearby.

"Hello?""

"Emily, where are you?""

"Why?""

"Because I'm worried about you.""

"You seem to do a lot of worrying when I ask questions.""

He exhaled.

"Listen to me. I know you found the ring.""

I looked down at my hand.

The band sat in an evidence envelope on Detective Hale's desk.

"How do you know that?""

"Because you took it off.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"The ring, Emily. You've worn it every day for five years. I noticed you weren't wearing it in the picture Natalie posted this morning.""

Natalie immediately checked her phone.

She'd posted a photograph of a coffee cup beside a window. Nothing else.

But in the reflection of the window, a faint shape of my hand was visible.

Damon had been watching closely enough to recognize that the ring was missing.

"Why does it matter to you?"" I asked.

"Because that ring belongs to my family.""

"Who was Victoria Shaw?""

He went silent.

Then he said, "You need to come home.""

"No.""

"Emily, don't make me choose between protecting you and protecting myself.""

Detective Hale raised his hand, signaling that he wanted me to keep him talking.

I swallowed.

"What are you protecting yourself from?""

Damon's voice dropped.

"Things you can't understand.""

"Try me.""

"You think Rachel is some innocent victim? She was the one who stole from me. She was the one who disappeared and left everyone blaming me.""

"Then why did you tell me you'd never been married?""

"Because I wanted a fresh start!""

His sudden shout echoed through the phone.

Then he lowered his voice again.

"Emily, please. I love you. Whatever Rachel told you, she wants revenge. She wants to destroy my life, and she'll use your baby to do it.""

I pressed a hand against my belly.

"Don't talk about our daughter.""

"Our daughter is the only thing that matters to me.""

"Then why have you been hiding my medical records?""

He said nothing.

"Why did Claire sign my name?""

"Claire was helping you.""

"Helping me do what?""

He hung up.

Detective Hale took my phone and documented the call.

"That conversation may be useful," he said, "but we still need evidence that connects him to any wrongdoing.""

I nodded.

For the next two hours, we waited while the department worked through the necessary procedures.

Then Detective Hale returned from a call with the facility.

His expression had changed.

"We've obtained authorization to inspect the unit," he said.

"The manager has confirmed that it hasn't been accessed in years.""

"What's inside?"" I asked.

"We don't know yet.""

He paused.

"But there's something else. The original rental record lists an emergency contact.""

"Who?""

He looked directly at me.

"Claire Bennett.""

I felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath my feet.

Before I could speak, another officer hurried into the office carrying a printed report.

"Detective, we have a problem.""

Hale took the paper.

His face hardened.

"What is it?"" Natalie asked.

He looked at us.

"The unit was accessed remotely this morning through a legacy account. Someone attempted to cancel the rental and authorize the destruction of its contents.""

"Can you identify who?"" I asked.

"We're investigating.""

He folded the report.

"There's one more thing. The storage company received a call from a woman claiming to be Victoria Shaw. She said she wanted everything inside the unit destroyed.""

I stared at him.

"Victoria is alive.""

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

He glanced toward the window.

"And if the caller really was Victoria, we need to understand why she suddenly wants the evidence gone.""

My phone buzzed again.

A message from Rachel.

*Emily, don't let them open the vault until you know who's waiting inside.*

A second message appeared.

*Claire knows you've found it. She'll do anything to keep the truth buried.*

I looked at the detective.

"What happens when you open that unit?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, "We find out whether Victoria left evidence behind.""

May you like

He glanced at the ring sealed in its envelope.

"And we find out why your husband was so determined to make sure you wore it.""
