Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden in My Birth Certificate

The knock came again.
Three hard strikes against the hotel room door.
“Mrs. Carter, please open the door.””
I stood frozen, holding the emergency petition in one hand and my phone in the other.
Natalie had moved between me and the entrance.
“Who authorized this?”” she demanded.
A woman's voice answered from the hallway.
“We have documentation requiring Mrs. Carter to undergo an immediate medical assessment.””
“Then show us the documentation.””
There was a pause.
I looked at Owen.
He had been speaking with Margaret on the phone, but the moment he heard the exchange, he ended the call.
“Don't open it,” he whispered.
Damon's voice followed.
“Emily, stop making this difficult. I'm trying to help you.””
I almost laughed.
“Help me? You forged my medical records!””
“That's not true.””
“You listed Claire as the guardian of my daughter!””
“It's temporary.””
“Temporary?””
His voice became impatient.
“Emily, you're not thinking clearly.””
I felt my hands begin to shake.
There it was again.
The same accusation.
The same attempt to make me sound unstable whenever I questioned him.
Natalie stepped closer to the door.
“My sister isn't going anywhere.””
Damon lowered his voice.
“Then I'll have the authorities decide.””
Owen immediately called Margaret back.
Within minutes, she arrived with another attorney and two uniformed officers.
The woman from the hospital stepped away from the door.
Damon looked furious.
“What is this?”” he demanded.
Margaret held up a copy of the petition.
“Mr. Carter, do you understand that submitting knowingly false medical information to obtain control over another person's legal affairs may constitute fraud?””
Damon's jaw tightened.
“I'm protecting my wife.””
“Then why did you forge her signature?””
His expression changed.
Margaret handed the officers a document.
The room fell silent.
Damon stared at the paper.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked genuinely frightened.
The officers separated everyone and began asking questions.
The hospital employee insisted she had only followed instructions from the clinic's administration.
Claire, who had been standing behind Damon, began crying.
“Emily, please. I didn't know he would take things this far.””
I turned toward her.
“You signed the petition.””
“I was trying to help.””
“You helped my husband declare me mentally unfit.””
Her tears stopped.
“That's not what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
She looked at Damon.
He gave her a warning glance.
That small exchange told me more than a thousand explanations could have.
Claire was afraid of him.
But she was also afraid of losing something.
Finally, she whispered, “You don't understand what your mother did.””
I stepped forward.
“What did my mother do?””
Claire looked directly at me.
“She stole you.””
The words struck me harder than I expected.
“What?””
“She wasn't your biological mother, Emily.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt Natalie grip my arm.
“Claire, shut your mouth,” Owen warned.
But Claire continued.
“Your mother knew the truth. She spent years pretending you were hers because she wanted to keep your father's inheritance in the family.””
I stared at her.
“That's impossible.””
“Ask Michael.””
My phone vibrated.
The message was from him.
*I'm outside with the original documents. Please don't let them leave before I arrive.*
I looked at Margaret.
“There's someone coming.””
She nodded.
“Who?””
“Michael. Rachel's husband.””
Damon suddenly stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone turned toward him.
I stared.
“Why not?””
He looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“Because that man has been lying to you.””
A cold sensation spread through my chest.
“What exactly is he lying about?””
Damon said nothing.
Instead, he looked at the officers.
“This is a family matter.””
Margaret stepped between us.
“Not anymore.””
Twenty minutes later, Michael entered the room carrying a battered leather folder.
He was in his early forties, with tired eyes and a gray streak running through his dark hair.
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he removed a photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
The woman was Rachel.
Owen's sister.
But the baby wasn't Lily.
The photograph was dated twenty-nine years earlier.
I looked closer.
The newborn had a small crescent-shaped birthmark near her left shoulder.
My hand instinctively moved toward my own shoulder.
I had the same mark.
Michael placed another photograph beside it.
A hospital record.
*Female infant. Mother: Rachel Whitmore. Father: Daniel Whitmore.*
I looked at Owen.
He had gone completely pale.
“That's not possible,” he whispered.
Michael shook his head.
“Rachel told me the baby had been taken from her shortly after birth.””
I felt dizzy.
“What are you saying?””
Michael opened the folder.
“Your mother adopted you.””
I looked at the documents.
The adoption certificate carried my mother's signature.
But there was something strange.
The date was six months after my supposed birth.
And the biological mother's name was Rachel Whitmore.
I stared at the paper.
“Then why did my mother tell me she was my mother?””
Michael's voice softened.
“Because she raised you.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she believed the people who arranged your adoption were dangerous.””
I looked at Damon.
He was watching me without blinking.
“Did you know?”” I asked.
He looked away.
“Emily…”
“Did you know I was adopted?””
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
“Did you know?””
Finally, he nodded.
“Yes.””
My knees nearly gave out.
“How long?””
“Before we got married.””
I covered my mouth.
He continued.
“Your father found out when you were little. He and your mother agreed to keep it secret.””
I looked at Michael.
“Why?””
Michael opened another document.
“Because Rachel was never supposed to lose you.””
He explained that Rachel had been young, unmarried, and under pressure from her wealthy family when I was born. Richard Carter, Damon's father, had arranged a private adoption through a lawyer connected to my father's company.
But Rachel had never consented.
My mother discovered the arrangement years later and used her position in the family to protect me.
She raised me as her daughter.
She also changed my inheritance documents to ensure that no one connected to the original arrangement could ever claim me or my child.
I looked at Owen.
“Then you're my uncle?””
He nodded slowly.
The man who had been listed as the biological father of my unborn daughter was actually my biological uncle.
I felt sick.
Damon finally spoke.
“That's why the agreement exists.””
I turned toward him.
“What agreement?””
He looked at Margaret.
Then back at me.
“Your biological family has a claim to the original estate. Your father wanted to keep it protected.””
I stared.
“My father was the man who raised me.””
“Yes,” Damon replied.
“And he loved me.””
Damon said nothing.
I took a shaky breath.
“Then what was the purpose of marrying me?””
His eyes met mine.
“To get access to the trust.””
I felt the room disappear around me.
He continued quietly.
“Richard spent years trying to recover the money your father took. When I met you, I thought I could finish what he started.””
My voice was barely audible.
“So you never loved me?””
For a moment, he looked almost human.
Then he answered.
“I didn't plan to.””
I turned away.
I couldn't look at him anymore.
But before I could say anything, Michael placed one final document on the table.
It was a letter from Rachel.
May you like
And at the bottom was a sentence that changed everything.
*Emily was not the only child taken from me.*
