Chapter 3: My Mother's Last Warning

I drove to Natalie's house that afternoon.

The entire journey, I kept checking my rearview mirror.

I knew it was irrational.

But after finding the documents, every passing car seemed suspicious, and every phone notification made my stomach tighten.

Natalie opened the door before I knocked.

She was holding a thick brown envelope.

“You look terrible,” she said.

“Thanks.””

“Come inside.””

She locked the door behind me.

Her living room smelled like cinnamon and laundry detergent. Normally, it was comforting.

Today, I couldn't relax.

Natalie placed the envelope on the coffee table.

“I found this in Mom's old storage box.””

“What's inside?””

“Letters. And a flash drive.””

I sat down.

She opened the envelope and removed several handwritten pages.

The first letter was dated six years earlier.

My mother's handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

The familiar loops in the capital letters.

The way she crossed her lowercase t's.

I began reading.

My dearest Emily,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I was unable to prevent. I have spent years hoping I was wrong about the people surrounding you.

Your father believed everyone deserved a second chance. I didn't agree.

There are people who don't approach you because they love you. They approach you because they know what you possess.

My throat tightened.

Natalie sat beside me.

The next paragraph mentioned Damon.

When you introduced Damon to us, I recognized the name immediately. He was connected to a man your father once trusted. I asked questions, but nobody gave me honest answers.

I begged your father to investigate.

He refused.

I looked up.

“Mom knew Damon before I married him?””

Natalie nodded.

“Apparently.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Maybe she tried.””

I looked back at the letter.

If Damon ever becomes interested in your inheritance, do not let him convince you that marriage gives him any right to it.

And if a woman named Claire Whitmore enters your life, be careful.

I stopped breathing.

Claire.

My mother had written her name six years ago.

I read the sentence again.

“That's impossible.””

Natalie frowned.

“What?””

“Claire and I met in college. Seven years ago.””

Natalie looked at the letter.

“Then why would Mom know her?””

I shook my head.

“I don't know.””

I continued reading.

There is a reason I changed the trust. Owen Whitmore is not the man you think he is, but he is the only person who knows what happened to your father's missing records.

If you ever need to understand the truth, find him.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

Do not trust the people who tell you they are protecting your baby.

I put the letter down.

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Natalie picked up the flash drive.

“This was taped inside the envelope.””

We connected it to her laptop.

There was only one video file.

The date was from four years earlier.

My mother appeared on the screen, sitting in her bedroom.

She looked thinner than I remembered.

Her hair was tied back, and her hands were trembling.

“Emily,” she began.

My eyes filled immediately.

“Mom…”

The video continued.

“If you're watching this, then I was right to be afraid.””

She looked toward something outside the camera frame.

Then she lowered her voice.

“I need you to understand something about your father. He didn't lose his company because of bad investments. Someone stole it from him.””

I leaned closer.

“Your father discovered that one of his business partners was using his accounts to move money through several shell companies. He confronted him. Three weeks later, the company collapsed.””

Natalie covered her mouth.

My mother continued.

“I never told you the man's name because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

She paused.

Then she said it.

“Richard Carter.””

My husband's father.

Dead for eleven years.

The room seemed to spin.

Damon had always told me his father died after a long illness.

He had also told me his family had nothing to do with my father's financial problems.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Richard wasn't working alone. There was another man helping him. A man who later became very close to your father.””

The video flickered.

Then my mother reached for a piece of paper.

“If Damon ever marries you, Emily, it won't be an accident.””

I stopped breathing.

Natalie grabbed my arm.

“What does that mean?””

Before I could answer, the video continued.

“Your father discovered that the missing money was connected to your inheritance. He tried to recover it before he died, but he couldn't.””

My mother leaned closer to the camera.

“Someone has been waiting for access to that money for years.””

Then she whispered:

“And if Claire is involved, don't assume she's acting alone.””

The screen went black.

I sat frozen.

For years, I had believed my marriage began with a chance meeting at a charity dinner.

Damon had spilled wine on my dress.

He had apologized.

We had laughed.

He had sent flowers the following morning.

It had felt like a romantic accident.

Now I wondered whether he had known exactly where to find me.

My phone rang.

Damon.

I stared at the screen.

Natalie whispered, “Don't answer.””

But I needed to know how much he knew.

I picked up.

“Hello?””

“Where are you?””

His voice was unusually sharp.

“At Natalie's.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to see my sister.””

A pause.

“Emily, I need you to come home.””

“Why?””

“Claire is here.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does she want?””

“She says there's been a misunderstanding.””

I almost laughed.

“A misunderstanding?””

“Please don't make this worse.””

“Worse than what, Damon?””

He exhaled.

“Emily, listen to me. You're pregnant, and you're letting people put ideas in your head.””

I looked at the paused video on Natalie's laptop.

“Did you know my father?””

Silence.

A long, terrible silence.

Then Damon spoke.

“Who told you that?””

I closed my eyes.

“Answer the question.””

“Emily, come home. We need to talk.””

“Did you know my father before we met?””

His voice dropped.

“Yes.””

My fingers went numb.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“Your father was the reason I found you.””

I couldn't speak.

Damon continued.

“He made a deal with my family before he died. You were supposed to inherit everything, and I was supposed to make sure it stayed where it belonged.””

I felt Natalie gripping my hand.

“What deal?””

“Come home, Emily.””

“Tell me what deal.””

He lowered his voice.

“The baby, the inheritance, Claire… none of this is what you think.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't explain it over the phone.””

“Why not?””

“Because Owen is here.””

My blood ran cold.

“Owen?””

“Yes.””

“Why is Claire's fiancé at my house?””

Damon didn't answer.

Instead, I heard a woman's voice in the background.

Claire.

“Damon, just tell her.””

Then another voice.

A man's.

Owen.

“Stop lying to her. She deserves to know who the father really is.””

I went completely still.

Damon shouted something away from the phone.

Then the call ended.

Natalie stared at me.

“What did he mean?””

I looked down at my stomach.

My daughter moved gently beneath my palm.

I had spent months believing she was the one beautiful thing Damon and I had created together.

But now someone was questioning her paternity.

And the most frightening part was that Damon hadn't denied it.

My phone vibrated again.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Emily, this is Owen Whitmore. Do not go home. Do not confront Claire. And whatever you do, don't let Damon take you to the hospital where you've been receiving prenatal care.*

A second message arrived.

*Your mother didn't change your trust to protect your inheritance. She changed it to protect your daughter.*

Then came a photograph.

It showed my hospital's maternity records.

My name.

My baby's due date.

And a document dated two months before my pregnancy.

At the bottom was a signature I recognized immediately.

My husband.

Damon Carter.

Underneath his signature were five words:

*AGREEMENT TO ASSUME PATERNAL RESPONSIBILITY.*

But the space marked BIOLOGICAL FATHER contained a different name.

*OWEN WHITMORE.*
