Chapter 4: The Name on the Birth Certificate

For almost a minute, I couldn't move.

I stared at the photograph Owen had sent me.

My name.

My baby's due date.

Damon's signature.

And Owen's name printed in the space where the biological father's name belonged.

I read the document again, hoping I had misunderstood something.

But the words remained unchanged.

*AGREEMENT TO ASSUME PATERNAL RESPONSIBILITY.*

“What is it?”” Natalie asked.

I handed her my phone.

She read the document, then looked at me.

“Emily, what does this mean?””

“I don't know.””

“Are you and Owen…”

“No.””

The answer came out immediately.

I had never slept with Owen. I had barely spent any time alone with him. He was Claire's fiancé, a polite, reserved man who occasionally attended our dinners and usually spent most of the evening checking his phone.

He had once helped Damon carry furniture into the nursery.

He had also been the person who bought Claire her engagement ring.

There was no world in which I could imagine him being the father of my child.

Unless someone had been lying to me.

My phone rang again.

Owen.

I answered.

“Where did you get that document?””

“From a file Claire left in my office.””

“Why does it have my name on it?””

“Because Damon submitted it to a private legal agency three months ago.””

“Three months ago? I wasn't even pregnant.””

“Exactly.””

I gripped the phone.

“Explain what you're telling me.””

Owen exhaled.

“Emily, I need you to understand that I didn't agree to this.””

“Then why is your name there?””

“Because someone used my identity to create a legal arrangement.””

“What arrangement?””

“Damon intended to register himself as the legal father while listing me as the biological father. The document was designed to create a dispute over parental rights after the birth.””

Natalie covered her mouth.

I felt cold.

“Why would he do that?””

“Your father's trust.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.””

“Your daughter is the first biological grandchild eligible to trigger the succession clause. But the trust has a restriction. If your husband is proven to have concealed a material conflict of interest, he loses any authority to challenge the distribution.””

“What does that have to do with you?””

“My family was named as independent custodians of the estate. Your mother changed the arrangement because she discovered that Damon's father had stolen money from your father's company.””

I remembered my mother's video.

Someone had been waiting for access to my inheritance.

Owen continued.

“Damon needed a reason to challenge the trust. If your daughter's biological paternity became legally disputed, he could argue that the succession documents were invalid.””

I swallowed.

“So he wants to claim the baby isn't mine?””

“No. He wants to make everyone question who has legal authority over her.””

I looked at Natalie.

She was shaking her head.

“That's insane,” I whispered.

“There's more,” Owen said.

“Of course there is.””

“Claire knows about the arrangement. She has been helping Damon collect your medical records.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because the company handling the trust requires proof of your daughter's birth and parentage before the money can be transferred.””

I stared at the floor.

“Then why would Claire be listed as her temporary guardian?””

Owen didn't answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was different.

“Because Claire was supposed to become the person controlling access to the child while Damon handled the estate.””

My stomach turned.

“Are you saying they planned to take my daughter?””

“I'm saying you need to protect yourself before they make another move.””

I looked at the clock.

Almost noon.

“Where are you?””

“Outside your sister's neighborhood.””

I froze.

“How do you know where I am?””

“Claire told me you were with Natalie. I came because I wanted to speak to you before Damon found you.””

Natalie immediately stood up and looked through the curtains.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

“Emily,” she whispered.

“There's someone outside.””

Owen spoke again.

“That's my car. I'm alone.””

I walked to the window.

A man stepped out.

Tall. Dark coat. Familiar face.

Owen.

He looked up toward the house and raised one hand.

“Let him in,” I said.

Natalie hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“No. But I need answers.””

Owen entered carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked exhausted.

There was a faint cut across his left cheek, and his tie was hanging loosely around his neck.

Natalie folded her arms.

“You have five minutes to explain why your name is on my sister's pregnancy documents.””

Owen placed the briefcase on the table.

“That's fair.””

He removed several papers.

“This is the original agreement. I found it in Claire's office yesterday.””

I scanned the first page.

My name appeared again.

So did Damon's.

But this time, another section caught my attention.

*MATERNAL ASSET BENEFICIARY: EMILY CARTER.*

Below it:

*CHILD BENEFICIARY: UNBORN FEMALE ISSUE OF EMILY CARTER.*

And beneath that was a clause.

*In the event of maternal incapacity, designated custodial authority shall transfer to the Whitmore family representative.*

I looked at Owen.

“Why your family?””

“Because my grandfather was your father's attorney.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“My grandfather handled the original trust. Your mother knew him. When she discovered what Richard Carter had done, she asked him to protect the estate.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she believed the people around you were monitoring her.””

Natalie picked up another paper.

“There's a payment schedule here.””

Owen nodded.

“Three payments. Twenty-five thousand dollars each.””

I recognized the amount.

“Claire received the first one.””

“Yes.””

“Who received the second?””

Owen hesitated.

“Damon.””

“And the third?””

He looked directly at me.

“It's scheduled for the day your daughter is born.””

The room went silent.

I felt my daughter move.

For the first time, I wasn't simply afraid of losing my marriage.

I was afraid that my child had become the center of a transaction.

I looked at Owen.

“Why are you helping me?””

His expression changed.

“Because Claire has been lying to me, too.””

He opened another compartment in his briefcase and removed a photograph.

It showed Claire standing outside a hotel.

Beside her was a man I recognized immediately.

Damon.

But the date printed beneath the image was from four years earlier.

Before my wedding.

Before my pregnancy.

Before Claire and Owen's engagement.

I looked closer.

Claire was holding Damon's hand.

And Damon was kissing her forehead.

“This was taken four years ago,” Owen said.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know about it until yesterday.””

He turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

*First meeting completed. Emily remains unaware.*

My throat tightened.

“What first meeting?””

Owen looked at me.

“Emily, I don't think Damon met you by accident.””

Before I could respond, Natalie's phone rang.

She checked the screen.

Then her face drained of color.

“It's Mom's old lawyer.””

She answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“Miss Natalie, I need to speak with Emily immediately. We have a serious problem.””

Natalie put the phone on speaker.

“What happened?”” I asked.

The lawyer took a shaky breath.

“Mrs. Carter, someone submitted a request to transfer the controlling authority of your father's trust this morning.””

“Who?””

“Your husband.””

“Can he do that?””

“No. Not without your consent.””

“Then reject it.””

“I would, but there's something else.””

“What?””

“The request includes a signed document stating that you are medically unfit to make financial decisions.””

I stood up.

“That is a lie.””

“I know, Mrs. Carter.””

He paused.

“Because the document was issued by your prenatal clinic.””

My blood ran cold.

Owen stepped forward.

“Which clinic?””

The lawyer read the name.

It was the hospital where I had been receiving prenatal care.

The same hospital Damon had insisted we use.

The same hospital Claire had visited several times claiming she was helping organize my maternity appointments.

Then the lawyer said something that made my knees weaken.

“Mrs. Carter, the document also states that you have been diagnosed with a severe pregnancy-related psychiatric condition.””

I looked at Natalie.

Then Owen.

And suddenly, I understood why they wanted my medical records.

They weren't just preparing to challenge my inheritance.

They were preparing to make me look incapable of protecting my own child.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Damon.

*Come home. Claire has something important to tell you.*

May you like

A second message followed.

*If you don't, I'll have no choice but to involve the doctors.*
