Chapter 9: The Name on the Birth Certificate
Julian didn't sleep that night.
He sat in his study until sunrise, surrounded by documents, photographs, and old hospital records.
At 6:30 a.m., Daniel entered carrying a tablet.
“Sir, we found Margaret Ellis.””
Julian stood immediately.
“Where?””
“She lives in a retirement community outside Hartford. She's agreed to meet us.””
“Did she say why?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“She said she has been waiting for this call for three years.””
Julian grabbed his jacket.
“Let's go.””
Margaret was sitting beside a large window when Julian entered the room.
She looked older than he remembered.
Her silver hair was short, her hands were thin, and a walking cane rested against her chair.
When she saw him, she began to cry.
“Mr. Whitmore.””
Julian approached.
“Margaret.””
She stood with difficulty.
“I am so sorry.””
He didn't sit.
“Tell me why my mother's name was added to my daughter's birth records.””
Margaret looked down.
Then she motioned toward the chair opposite her.
“Please sit. What I'm about to tell you will change everything.””
Julian remained standing.
“Start talking.””
Margaret took a trembling breath.
“Your mother believed Claire was going to leave you.””
Julian frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Claire had discovered that Evelyn was using the family company to move money into private accounts.””
Julian stared.
“What?””
Margaret nodded.
“Claire found irregular payments. She told Evelyn she intended to tell you.””
Julian felt a familiar wave of anger.
“Did my mother know?””
“She knew Claire had copies of the documents.””
“Where were they?””
“I don't know.””
Margaret continued.
“Your mother became frightened. She believed that if Claire exposed the financial activity, the family's reputation would be destroyed.””
Julian paced toward the window.
“So she tried to control Claire through Poppy.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Margaret looked at him.
“Evelyn wanted to become the child's legal guardian. She believed that if she controlled the guardianship and the trust, she could control the inheritance and prevent Claire's documents from being released.””
Julian shook his head.
“She couldn't simply add herself to a birth certificate.””
“No. But she could influence people who had access to the records.””
“Who?””
Margaret looked down at her hands.
“Dr. Reeves. Richard Hale. And me.””
Julian stared.
“You were involved?””
Margaret began crying harder.
“I was told the paperwork was temporary. Your mother said it was only to protect Poppy if you became unable to care for her.””
“And you believed her?””
“I was afraid of losing my job. I had worked for her for fifteen years.””
Julian's voice sharpened.
“My wife was dying. My daughter had just been born. And you were worried about losing your job?””
Margaret flinched.
“I know. I know how terrible that sounds.””
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Margaret reached into a drawer.
She removed a small flash drive.
“Your mother asked me to keep this. She told me to destroy it after the legal amendment was completed.””
Julian took it.
“What is it?””
“An audio recording.””
“Of what?””
“The meeting between Evelyn, Dr. Reeves, and Richard Hale.””
Julian looked at Daniel.
“Can we play it?””
Daniel nodded.
He connected the drive to his tablet.
A few seconds later, Evelyn's voice filled the room.
“Once Claire is gone, Julian will be vulnerable. He'll need someone to manage the child.””
Richard Hale answered.
“And the trust?””
“Poppy's inheritance must remain under family supervision.””
Dr. Reeves spoke next.
“The guardianship document requires the mother's consent.””
Evelyn replied without hesitation.
“Then make sure the paperwork reflects her consent.””
Julian's face went white.
The recording continued.
Richard asked:
“And if Claire survives?””
There was a pause.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Claire won't be making any decisions after tonight.””
The audio ended.
Julian stood completely still.
Margaret covered her face.
“I never thought she would go that far.””
Julian looked at her.
“Did she arrange Claire's death?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't know. I swear I don't know. But I heard her speaking to Dr. Reeves about changing the medication.””
Julian's jaw tightened.
“Did you tell anyone?””
“I tried to speak to the hospital administrator. Your mother found out. She threatened to have me arrested for stealing confidential records.””
Julian looked at the flash drive.
“You kept this for three years.””
“I was ashamed. And afraid.””
He nodded slowly.
“Your statement will be important.””
Margaret reached for his hand.
“Mr. Whitmore, there's one more thing.””
Julian looked at her.
“Claire knew about the financial accounts. Before she died, she gave me a sealed envelope.””
“Where is it?””
Margaret pointed toward a small cabinet.
“I never opened it.””
Julian retrieved the envelope.
His name was written across the front.
*For Julian. Only if Evelyn's plan succeeds.*
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Claire standing in a hospital room, holding newborn Poppy.
Beside her was Margaret.
On the back, Claire had written:
*The truth is in the little yellow box.*
Julian stared.
“The yellow box?””
Margaret nodded.
“Claire mentioned it once. She said she had hidden something in the nursery before she went to the hospital.””
Julian remembered the box beneath Poppy's bed.
The box Celeste had forbidden her to open.
He immediately called Marta.
“Marta, I need you to check Poppy's room. Under her bed, there should be a small yellow box.””
Marta answered.
“Yes, sir. I'll look now.””
A minute passed.
Then she returned.
“Sir, I found it.””
“Open it.””
“There's a key, several photographs, and a small envelope.””
Julian's heart raced.
“Read the envelope.””
Marta hesitated.
“Sir, it's addressed to Poppy.””
Julian closed his eyes.
“Bring everything to my study. Carefully.””
An hour later, Julian was back home.
Poppy sat beside him on the sofa while Marta placed the yellow box on the coffee table.
The little girl looked at it.
“That's Mommy's box.””
Julian smiled gently.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Celeste told me I wasn't allowed to touch it.””
“That's all right. You didn't do anything wrong.””
He opened the lid.
Inside were several photographs, a tiny silver bracelet, and a sealed letter.
The bracelet had Poppy's name engraved on it.
Julian picked it up.
“She bought this before you were born.””
Poppy touched the silver surface.
“It's pretty.””
He opened the letter.
My precious Poppy,
If you are old enough to read this, I hope you are happy and surrounded by people who love you.
If you are reading it because someone has made you feel unwanted, please remember that you were never a mistake.
You were the greatest gift of my life.
Julian paused.
Poppy leaned against him.
He continued.
There is something important you must know. Your grandmother may tell you that she wanted to protect you. She may even say she did everything for your future.
But love never asks a child to be afraid.
Julian's eyes filled.
He turned the page.
A small document had been attached.
It was a handwritten list of account numbers, company names, and dates.
At the bottom was a message.
*The person who helped Evelyn hide the money is not Richard Hale. It is someone Julian trusts with his company.*
Julian stared.
He knew the name before he even reached the next line.
*Daniel Cross.*
His assistant.
His closest business adviser.
The man who had stood beside him during the funeral.
The man who had helped him arrange the wedding.
The man who had been investigating everything on his behalf.
Julian slowly lowered the letter.
Poppy looked up.
“Daddy, are you sad?””
He forced a small smile.
“Just thinking about Mommy.””
She touched his cheek.
“Don't be sad. I can hug you.””
Julian pulled her into his arms.
“Thank you, sweetheart.””
Then his phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared.
*Sir, I have the final documents you requested. I'm downstairs.*
Julian looked toward the study door.
His security officer appeared.
“Sir, Mr. Cross is asking to see you.””
Julian stood.
“Tell him to wait.””
He turned to Marta.
“Take Poppy upstairs. Stay with her.””
Poppy reached for his hand.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Will you still be here when I wake up?””
Julian bent down and kissed her forehead.
“I'll be right here.””
He watched her disappear up the stairs.
Then he walked into his study and locked the door.
Daniel stood beside the desk, holding a black folder.
“Sir,” he said with his usual professional smile.
“You look exhausted.””
Julian looked at the man who had worked beside him for twelve years.
Then he placed Claire's letter on the desk.
“Tell me about the money.””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“What money?””
Julian pushed the photograph of the hidden account records toward him.
Daniel glanced down.
For a moment, his expression remained blank.
Then he slowly closed the folder.
“I was hoping you wouldn't find that.””
Julian's voice was ice.
“How long?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Long enough.””
“Did you help my mother?””
Daniel exhaled.
“Your mother made me an offer I couldn't refuse.””
Julian stepped closer.
“Did you know Claire was in danger?””
Daniel didn't answer.
“DID YOU KNOW?””
Daniel finally raised his eyes.
“I knew she was supposed to disappear from the picture.””
Julian felt the room tilt.
Before he could speak, Daniel reached into his jacket.
He didn't pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed Claire in her hospital bed.
Standing beside her was Daniel.
And on the back, written in Claire's handwriting, were four words.
*He knows what happened.*
Daniel placed the photograph on the desk.
Then he said something Julian would never forget.
“Your wife wasn't supposed to die that night, sir.””
May you like
He paused.
“Someone changed the plan.””
