Chapter 4: The Secret Beneath the Photograph

Julian stared at the sentence beneath the photograph.

*The reason Mommy never came home.*

For several seconds, the hallway seemed to disappear around him.

Claire.

His first wife.

Poppy's mother.

She had died three years earlier, shortly after giving birth to their daughter. At least, that was what everyone had told him. Complications following an emergency medical procedure.

A tragic outcome. Nothing more could have been done.

He remembered the hospital corridor, the white flowers, the funeral, and the months when he could barely bring himself to enter the nursery.

His mother, Evelyn, had been the one who arranged everything.

She had handled the funeral paperwork, spoken to the doctors, and even helped him choose the headstone.

Julian had trusted her.

Now, standing outside his daughter's bedroom, he looked at the photograph again.

“Poppy, sweetheart, where did you get this?””

The little girl held the notebook tightly.

“It was inside the box under my bed.””

“What box?””

“The one Celeste told me never to open.””

Julian crouched.

“Did you open it before?””

Poppy nodded.

“Only once. I wanted to see Mommy's pictures.””

“And what happened?””

Poppy's eyes moved toward the staircase.

“Celeste got very angry. She said Mommy was gone because I made her sick.””

Julian stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?””

“She said Mommy had to go to the hospital because I wouldn't stop crying when I was a baby.””

He gently took Poppy's hands.

“Listen carefully. Your mommy loved you more than anything. Nothing you did caused her death. Nothing.””

Poppy's eyes filled.

“Then why did Celeste say it?””

“I don't know yet.””

He kissed her forehead.

“But I'm going to find out.””

He stood and turned toward Daniel.

“Get my mother on the phone.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your mother is currently at the estate in Connecticut.””

“Then call her.””

Within minutes, Evelyn answered.

“Julian, darling! What a surprise. Is everything all right?””

He looked at the photograph.

“Mother, we need to talk about Claire.””

Silence.

Then Evelyn laughed nervously.

“Claire? Why are you bringing up the past?””

“Because I found something in Poppy's room.””

“What kind of something?””

“A photograph. And a message about the reason her mother never came home.””

Evelyn's voice changed.

“Julian, don't let that child fill your head with nonsense.””

He stiffened.

“Why would you say that?””

“Children misunderstand things. Especially when they're upset.””

“Did you tell Celeste something about Claire?””

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Julian closed his eyes.

“Mother, I watched the security footage. You were speaking to Celeste about something that happened before my wedding.””

Another silence.

Then Evelyn sighed.

“Your wife was simply trying to protect the family.””

“From what?””

“From unnecessary pain.””

“WHAT HAPPENED TO CLAIRE?””

His voice echoed down the hallway.

Poppy flinched inside the bedroom.

Julian immediately lowered his voice.

Evelyn spoke again.

“You're exhausted, Julian. We can discuss this when you're calmer.””

“No. We're discussing it now.””

“I have nothing to explain.””

The call ended.

Julian stared at his phone.

His mother had hung up on him.

That had never happened before.

He turned to Daniel.

“Find the hospital records from Claire's final admission. Every report, every signature, every payment.””

Daniel nodded.

“I'll contact the hospital's legal department.””

“And find the original recordings from the house.””

“Understood.””

Julian returned to Poppy's bedroom.

She was sitting on the bed, holding Claire's photograph against her chest.

He sat beside her.

“Would you like to tell me something about Mommy?””

Poppy nodded.

“She had a pretty voice.””

Julian smiled sadly.

“Yes, she did.””

“She used to sing when I was little.””

“I remember.””

“Celeste said she wasn't very good.””

Julian looked at the photograph.

“Celeste never knew your mother.””

Poppy looked confused.

“But she said Mommy was selfish.””

Julian gently brushed a loose strand of hair from her forehead.

“Your mommy was the kindest person I ever knew.””

Poppy smiled faintly.

“Can we put her picture on my bedside table?””

“Of course.””

He placed the photograph beside the lamp.

For the first time in months, Claire's smiling face was visible in the room.

A little later, Marta brought dinner.

She had prepared chicken, rice, and steamed carrots.

Poppy ate slowly, occasionally looking at her father as though checking he was still there.

Julian stayed beside her until she finished.

Then he tucked her into bed.

“Will you leave the light on?”” she asked.

“Absolutely.””

“And the door open?””

“Just the way you like it.””

She reached for his hand.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“If I tell you something bad, will you still love me?””

Julian's heart tightened.

“Nothing you tell me could ever change that.””

Poppy swallowed.

“Celeste said Mommy didn't want me.””

Julian bent forward and kissed both her cheeks.

“Your mommy wanted you so much that she spent months preparing for your arrival. She picked your name. She decorated your nursery. She even bought you a little yellow coat before you were born.””

Poppy's eyes widened.

“Really?””

“Really.””

He smiled.

“And I still have it.””

She closed her eyes.

“Can I wear it tomorrow?””

“Of course.””

Julian remained in the chair beside her bed.

He didn't intend to sleep.

Downstairs, Daniel was waiting with his laptop open.

“Sir, I found something.””

Julian walked into his study.

“What is it?””

Daniel turned the screen.

It was an old hospital document.

The heading read:

*PATIENT: CLAIRE WHITMORE.*

Below it was the name of the attending physician.

Dr. Samuel Reeves.

Julian recognized the name.

He had personally donated millions to the hospital after Claire's death.

“What am I looking at?””

Daniel pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

“According to the original record, Mrs. Whitmore was stable after delivery. The emergency procedure was ordered several hours later.””

Julian frowned.

“Why?””

Daniel opened another document.

“The official explanation was internal bleeding.””

“Then what's this?””

“A handwritten note from a nurse who was dismissed shortly afterward.””

Julian read it.

His face drained of color.

The note contained only one sentence.

*The patient was conscious and repeatedly asked to speak to her husband, but Mrs. Evelyn Whitmore instructed staff not to contact him.*

Julian slowly lowered the paper.

“Get me Dr. Reeves.””

Daniel hesitated.

“There's another problem, sir.””

“What?””

“Dr. Reeves retired five months ago. His current address is unavailable.””

Julian looked toward the window.

Outside, the city lights shimmered.

For three years, he had believed his wife died surrounded by people trying to save her.

Now he was beginning to suspect that someone had deliberately kept him away.

And the person who might have known the truth was the woman who had raised him.

His phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A message appeared.

*Mr. Whitmore, if you want to know what really happened to Claire, meet me tomorrow. Come alone. I was the nurse who held her hand that night.*

May you like

A second message followed.

*And please, don't tell your mother.*
