Chapter 8: The Doctor's Confession

The silence that followed Dr. Reeves's answer was deafening.

Evelyn slowly turned toward him.

“Samuel.””

The doctor stared at the floor.

“I'm sorry.””

Julian took the document from his hands.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Reeves swallowed.

“I was asked to sign a medical authorization and guardianship statement. Mrs. Whitmore told me Claire had already approved the arrangements.””

“Did you see her sign?””

“No.””

“Did you speak to her?””

Reeves hesitated.

“Yes. Earlier that afternoon.””

“What did she say?””

“She asked me to contact you.””

Julian's jaw tightened.

“And you refused?””

“I was instructed not to interfere in family matters.””

“By whom?””

Reeves looked toward Evelyn.

She folded her arms.

“This is ridiculous. Samuel, you are confused.””

The doctor shook his head.

“No, Evelyn. I'm finished lying.””

Julian stepped closer.

“Why did you sign?””

Reeves removed his glasses.

“Money. And pressure.””

“How much?””

“Two hundred thousand dollars.””

Julian's face became expressionless.

“Who paid you?””

“Mrs. Whitmore arranged the transfer through a consulting company.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You're taking the word of a disgraced doctor over your own mother?””

Julian didn't look at her.

“Keep talking, Doctor.””

Reeves opened the leather folder again.

He removed a second document.

“This is the original medication order.””

Julian examined it.

The medication listed was not the same as the one in Claire's final medical report.

“What am I looking at?””

Reeves looked exhausted.

“I changed her treatment after receiving instructions from an outside consultant. I should have requested a second opinion. I didn't.””

“Did you know it could be dangerous?””

“I knew it required closer monitoring.””

“And was she monitored?””

Reeves closed his eyes.

“No.””

Julian felt his hands shaking.

“Why?””

“Because your mother insisted that Claire's condition was stable. She said the family wanted privacy.””

“Privacy?””

“Yes.””

Julian turned toward Evelyn.

“You let my wife die without allowing her husband to know she was asking for him?””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“I did what was necessary.””

Julian stared.

“Necessary for whom?””

“For this family!””

He stepped forward.

“Don't you dare use the word family to excuse what happened.””

Evelyn's voice rose.

“You were falling apart! Claire was sick, the baby needed stability, and someone had to think about the future!””

“So you decided to replace her?””

Evelyn looked at him coldly.

“I decided that you needed someone who understood our family.””

“And Celeste was that person?””

Evelyn said nothing.

Julian gave a bitter laugh.

“You paid her to marry me.””

“That was an arrangement.””

“She was supposed to become Poppy's guardian.””

“She was supposed to protect the child.””

Julian pointed upstairs.

“From whom?””

Evelyn's composure finally cracked.

“From losing everything!””

The words echoed through the hall.

Marta appeared at the staircase.

She looked frightened.

Behind her stood Poppy, holding a stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

Julian immediately turned.

Poppy was staring at Evelyn.

The older woman looked up at her granddaughter.

For a brief moment, her expression softened.

“Come here, darling.””

Poppy stepped backward.

Julian moved between them.

“Don't approach her.””

Evelyn's face changed.

“I'm her grandmother.””

“Then you should have protected her.””

Poppy looked at the floor.

“Daddy?””

Julian crouched.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Is Grandma the person who made Mommy sad?””

Nobody moved.

Evelyn opened her mouth.

But no words came.

Julian gently took Poppy's hand.

“Go upstairs with Marta, baby.””

“Are you coming?””

“In a minute.””

Poppy looked at him carefully.

Then she whispered:

“Please don't let them take me.””

Julian felt his heart break all over again.

“No one is taking you anywhere.””

Marta led her upstairs.

When they disappeared, Julian stood.

He looked at his mother.

“You're leaving.””

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“You cannot throw me out of this family.””

“You made yourself an outsider when you decided my daughter's safety was negotiable.””

She grabbed her handbag.

“Your father would be ashamed of you.””

Julian looked at her.

“My father would be ashamed of what you did.””

Evelyn turned toward the door.

Then she stopped.

“You think you're protecting Poppy? You don't even know what Claire was hiding.””

Julian froze.

“What?””

Evelyn gave a cold smile.

“Ask yourself why Claire was so desperate to keep that trust fund untouched.””

“Because it belonged to her daughter.””

“No. Because the money wasn't the only thing inside that trust.””

Julian stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Evelyn walked toward the entrance.

“Find the original beneficiary agreement.””

Then she left.

An hour later, Julian sat in his study with Marcus on speakerphone.

Dr. Reeves had agreed to provide a formal statement to the appropriate authorities.

The medical records were being secured.

The suspicious financial transfers were under review.

But Evelyn's final remark continued to bother him.

“Marcus, pull the original trust agreement.””

“I already have it.””

“Read the full document.””

Marcus paused.

“There's a clause involving a property transfer.””

“What property?””

“Claire's family estate.””

Julian frowned.

“Claire never owned an estate.””

“She inherited one from her grandfather. It's a property in Vermont, along with a private investment portfolio.””

Julian leaned forward.

“How much is it worth?””

“Approximately thirty million dollars.””

He stared at the desk.

“Why wasn't I told?””

“Because Claire placed it in an irrevocable trust for Poppy. The trust also includes a clause protecting the inheritance from anyone who attempts to obtain guardianship through fraud or coercion.””

Julian slowly understood.

“Meaning?””

“If we prove the guardianship amendment was fraudulent, the people involved could lose any financial benefit connected to the trust.””

Julian looked at the list of names Rebecca had given him.

“Then Celeste and my mother had a reason to keep Poppy under their control.””

“Yes.””

Marcus continued.

“There's another provision. If Poppy is deliberately deprived of basic necessities by someone attempting to obtain control of the trust, that person's claim to any related benefit becomes void.””

Julian remembered the metal bowl.

The empty dinner plate.

His daughter's trembling voice.

“Can we use the recording?””

“We can submit it as evidence. But we'll need the original file and supporting documentation.””

“Do it.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Julian, I also found a letter addressed to Poppy. It was sealed with the trust documents.””

Julian sat straighter.

“What does it say?””

“It's from Claire.””

“Read it.””

Marcus opened the file.

“It's a letter to be delivered when Poppy turns eighteen, or earlier if a specific legal condition is triggered.””

Julian looked toward the stairs.

“What condition?””

Marcus answered carefully.

“An attempt to change her guardianship without your consent.””

Julian felt a chill.

“Open it.””

There was a pause.

Then Marcus began reading.

My beautiful Poppy,

If you're reading this before your eighteenth birthday, someone has tried to take control of the life I worked so hard to protect.

I need you to know something.

Your father did not know what was happening. Please don't blame him.

Julian lowered his head.

Claire had known.

She had known someone might turn their daughter against him.

She had even prepared a message to protect his relationship with Poppy.

Marcus continued.

There is one person who knows why Evelyn wanted you so badly. That person was present when you were born.

Julian immediately thought of Rebecca's warning.

His mother's personal assistant.

“What was the name of Evelyn's assistant three years ago?”” he asked.

Marcus checked the records.

“Margaret Ellis.””

Julian remembered her.

Margaret had worked for his mother for nearly fifteen years.

She had disappeared shortly after Claire's funeral, supposedly retiring to care for a sick relative.

“Find her.””

“I'll try.””

“No. I want her found tonight.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Julian, there's something else in the letter.””

“What?””

Marcus read the final paragraph.

If Margaret tells you what happened in the hospital, you will understand why Evelyn never wanted you to see the original birth certificate.

Julian stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

“The original birth certificate?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus turned several pages.

Then his voice changed.

“Julian, according to the original hospital records, Poppy's birth registration was amended two days after Claire died.””

Julian stared at the wall.

“What was changed?””

Marcus took a breath.

“The name of the person listed as the second legal parent.””

Julian's blood ran cold.

“That's impossible. I'm her father.””

“Your name is still listed as her father.””

“Then what was changed?””

Marcus answered.

“An additional legal claim was inserted.””

Julian gripped the desk.

“Whose?””

Marcus went silent for a moment.

May you like

Then he spoke.

“Evelyn Whitmore.””
