Chapter 6: The Brother Who Signed the Wrong Papers

I couldn't process what Michael had just said.

For three years, I'd believed my brother had stood beside me through the worst period of my life.

He had driven me to the hospital. He had helped arrange Emily's funeral. He had stayed at our house for two weeks after she died, making sure Sophie and I weren't alone.

He had held my shoulder when I couldn't stop crying.

And now his name was appearing on documents connected to my wife's final medical decisions.

"Start talking," I said.

Michael looked at the floor.

"Not here.""

"Here.""

"Daniel, please.""

I held up the phone.

"Your name is on my wife's medical records. Vanessa knew her. Someone changed a treatment authorization. And you were involved.""

Michael rubbed both hands over his face.

"I never wanted any of this to happen.""

I laughed without humor.

"Nobody ever does.""

My mother moved Sophie toward the sofa.

"Daniel, let me take her somewhere quiet.""

I nodded.

"Take her with Laura. Stay with the police.""

Sophie reached for me.

"Daddy, are you coming?""

I kissed her forehead.

"I'll be right here, sweetheart.""

She studied my face.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

My mother led her out.

When the door closed, I turned toward Michael.

"Now tell me what happened.""

He sat down heavily.

"Three years ago, Emily called me.""

I frowned.

"Why would she call you?""

"She wanted help understanding some medical paperwork. She said there were inconsistencies in her treatment records.""

Richard nodded slowly.

"That's correct.""

I turned toward him.

"You knew?""

"Emily contacted me after she discovered certain documents had been altered.""

I felt anger rising again.

"Why didn't either of you tell me?""

Michael looked miserable.

"Emily specifically asked me not to tell you immediately.""

"Why?""

"Because she was afraid you would confront the hospital, and she didn't know who was involved.""

I stared at him.

"She was my wife.""

"I know.""

"She was dying.""

"I know, Daniel!""

His voice broke.

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"Do you think I don't remember? I was there when she called me. She was terrified. She said someone had been accessing her records without permission.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She stood silently near the window.

"Who was accessing them?""

Michael swallowed.

"Vanessa.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Michael continued.

"Emily found that Vanessa had viewed her records several times. At first, she thought it was an administrative mistake. Then she discovered a request to transfer her treatment coordination to another provider.""

I looked at the authorization.

"Who approved it?""

Michael pointed at the screen.

"That was me.""

My stomach dropped.

"You approved my wife's treatment transfer?""

"No. I signed as a witness to a document Emily asked me to review.""

"Did you read it?""

He hesitated.

"Not carefully enough.""

I stepped toward him.

"How could you sign something without reading it?""

"Because Emily trusted me!""

"Then you should have protected her!""

Michael flinched.

"I know.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Richard opened his folder.

"There's more.""

He placed another document on the dressing table.

It was a financial agreement between Vanessa and a company called Reed Medical Consulting.

I scanned the first paragraph.

The agreement had been signed seven months before Emily died.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What's this?""

She said nothing.

Richard answered.

"Vanessa was being paid to identify patients who might qualify for certain private treatment programs.""

"Why?""

"Referral fees. Administrative contracts. Financial incentives.""

I stared at the document.

"Was Emily one of those patients?""

Richard nodded.

"She was.""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"Those programs were legitimate.""

"Then why did you hide them?""

"Because you wouldn't understand.""

"Try me.""

She stepped forward.

"Emily's treatment was expensive. Her insurance coverage was limited. There were alternative programs available, and I was trying to find one that could help.""

Richard shook his head.

"You were also receiving payments for referrals.""

Vanessa glared at him.

"You benefited too!""

Richard didn't deny it.

That made me even angrier.

I looked between them.

"How much money?""

Richard placed a statement on the table.

The amount was just under ninety thousand dollars.

I stared at it.

"Was any of that connected to Emily's treatment?""

"Some of it," he admitted.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"The treatment program wasn't a scam.""

"Then why did Emily leave these letters?""

"Because she didn't understand the process!""

I looked at her.

"She was a grown woman with doctors, medical records, and a husband. You had no right to make decisions behind her back.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Your wife was difficult.""

The words came out quietly.

But they landed like a slap.

I stepped toward her.

"Say that again.""

She lifted her chin.

"She was difficult. She questioned everything. She made everyone feel guilty. She didn't want anyone else involved, even when she couldn't manage her own treatment.""

I remembered Emily lying in the hospital bed, apologizing because she couldn't attend Sophie's preschool graduation.

I remembered her asking me to read the same bedtime story over the phone because she was afraid Sophie would forget her voice.

And this woman had described her as difficult.

I felt my hands shaking.

"Get out of my sight.""

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

"Daniel, don't do this.""

"You're finished.""

She looked at Michael.

"Tell him.""

Michael didn't move.

"Tell him what we agreed!""

He looked up.

"Vanessa, stop.""

She pointed at him.

"You said you'd explain!""

I turned toward my brother.

"What agreement?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Vanessa offered to pay off my business debt.""

I stared.

"How much?""

"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

The number hit me harder than I expected.

"Why?""

"She said she wanted me to help her manage some financial arrangements after the wedding.""

"What arrangements?""

Michael looked at the floor.

"The guardianship.""

I felt sick.

"She was paying you to help take my daughter?""

"No! I thought it was temporary. She said you were planning to travel, and Sophie would stay with her father for a while.""

"Richard?""

Michael nodded.

Richard let out a bitter laugh.

"I never agreed to raise the child.""

Vanessa spun toward him.

"You promised me!""

Richard's expression turned cold.

"I promised to help you protect your financial interests. I never promised to become a babysitter.""

There it was.

The truth was uglier than I'd imagined.

They weren't planning a family.

They were arranging a transaction.

I looked at Michael.

"And what did you promise in return?""

He swallowed.

"To help get your signature on the wedding documents.""

I stared at him.

"Which documents?""

"The guardianship agreement. The financial authorization. A few other papers.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"You were going to ask me to sign them at my own wedding?""

Michael nodded.

I stepped back.

For the first time in my life, I didn't recognize my brother.

A knock sounded at the door.

Two police officers entered with the wedding coordinator.

One officer introduced himself as Detective Harris.

"Mr. Carter, we received your report. We'd like to speak with everyone separately.""

I nodded.

"Good.""

He looked at Vanessa.

"Ms. Reed, we need you to accompany us.""

Vanessa immediately raised her voice.

"On what grounds?""

"We're investigating an alleged assault involving a minor, possible forged documents, and unauthorized access to financial records.""

She turned toward me.

"Daniel, tell them this is a misunderstanding!""

I didn't answer.

The detective began collecting the papers.

Then his partner approached Michael.

"Mr. Carter, we'll need your cooperation too.""

Michael looked at me.

"Daniel, please. I'm your brother.""

I stared at him.

"You should have remembered that before you signed those papers.""

The officers escorted Vanessa toward the hallway.

But just before she disappeared, she turned around.

"Daniel!""

I looked at her.

"You think you've won? You don't even know what Emily discovered.""

My heart began pounding.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

"Ask your brother why Emily called him the night before she died.""

I turned toward Michael.

He had gone completely pale.

"Michael?""

He shook his head.

"Daniel, don't listen to her.""

"Why did Emily call you?""

He looked at the door.

Then back at me.

And finally, he whispered:

"Because she wanted me to take Sophie away from you.""

I couldn't speak.

Michael reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.

It was a hospital visitor's log.

Emily's name appeared at the top.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

*Patient requests private meeting with Michael Carter. Urgent.*

The date was the night before she died.

I looked at my brother.

"What did she tell you?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"She said she was afraid someone was going to use her death to take Sophie away from you.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Michael slowly unfolded the rest of the paper.

At the bottom was a name.

Not Vanessa's.

Not Richard's.

It was the name of the attorney who had witnessed Emily's final medical authorization.

And beneath it, in Emily's handwriting, were six words:

*The person you trust most is involved.*

Michael looked at me.

Then he said:

"Daniel, the attorney was your father.""

I stopped breathing.

May you like

My father had been dead for five years.

And according to the hospital records, he had signed a document three years after his death.
