Chapter 3: The Man Waiting in the Parking Garage
I had never seen Vanessa's father.
According to her, Richard Reed had died when she was twenty-two.
She had described him as a successful businessman who left behind a complicated estate and a family that had never recovered from his death.
I'd offered my condolences.
She had kissed my cheek and told me she preferred not to discuss him.
Now Laura was telling me the man was alive.
And he was waiting downstairs to take my daughter.
"Who is this man?"" I asked.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Laura is confused.""
Laura shook her head.
"I'm not confused. I saw him this morning.""
Michael grabbed his wife's elbow.
"That's enough.""
She pulled away.
"No, Michael. I've kept quiet for months because you told me it wasn't my business. But this is a child.""
I looked at my brother.
"Months?""
He stared at the carpet.
"Daniel, let me explain.""
"Not another word until you tell me who Richard Reed is.""
Laura answered for him.
"He's Vanessa's father. He's been staying at a hotel about twenty minutes from here.""
Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.
"My father and I haven't spoken in years. Even if he were alive, he wouldn't be interested in Sophie.""
"Then why is he here?"" I asked.
She looked away.
That was the second time she'd failed to answer a simple question.
I turned toward the security officers.
"Please make sure nobody removes my daughter from this hotel.""
One officer nodded.
"Of course, sir.""
The other asked whether I wanted them to contact local police immediately.
"Yes.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
I ignored her.
I carried Sophie toward the hallway.
But as we reached the doorway, she suddenly grabbed my collar.
"Daddy?""
"What's wrong?""
She whispered something that made my heart stop.
"That's the man who came to our house.""
I looked down.
"What man?""
"The man in the gray car.""
My mind raced.
"When did he come?""
"Last week. Vanessa told me to stay upstairs, but I looked through the window.""
Sophie buried her face against my shoulder.
"He was talking to Michael.""
I turned slowly.
My brother had gone completely still.
"Michael?""
He looked up.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
"Did you meet Vanessa's father at my house?""
He rubbed his jaw.
"It was a business meeting.""
"At my house?""
"I was trying to help Vanessa.""
"Help her do what?""
Michael glanced toward the security officers.
"Can we talk somewhere private?""
I shook my head.
"You lost the right to private conversations when you helped someone target my daughter.""
His face tightened.
"That's unfair.""
"Then explain the money.""
He looked at Vanessa.
She gave him a warning stare.
I understood something then.
My brother wasn't simply protecting her.
He was afraid of her.
I turned toward Laura.
"Why did you wait until today?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I didn't know how bad it was until last night.""
"What happened last night?""
She took a breath.
"I was at Michael's house. He received a phone call while he was in the shower. His phone was on the kitchen counter. Vanessa's name appeared on the screen.""
Michael shook his head.
"Laura—"
She continued.
"I shouldn't have listened, but I heard her say, 'Once Daniel signs the marriage papers, everything will be easier.''"
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn't move.
Laura wiped her cheek.
"Then she said something about Sophie being sent away for a few months until the situation settled.""
My arms tightened around my daughter.
"What situation?""
"I don't know. But I heard the words temporary placement and medical evaluation.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
"That's ridiculous!""
Laura pulled a folded piece of paper from her handbag.
"I took a photograph of this before I left.""
She handed me her phone.
On the screen was an image of a document.
The heading read:
*CHILD TRANSITION PLAN — PRIVATE FAMILY ARRANGEMENT.*
Below it were several names.
Vanessa Reed.
Richard Reed.
Michael Carter.
And one more.
My own name.
I scrolled down.
The document described a proposed temporary residential placement for Sophie after the wedding.
The reason given was that I would be traveling internationally for an extended honeymoon and would need assistance managing my responsibilities as a new husband.
I read the sentence twice.
It was written as though I had already agreed.
Then I noticed the date.
The plan had been created six weeks earlier.
Six weeks.
While Vanessa was choosing flowers with me.
While she was asking Sophie what kind of birthday cake she wanted.
While I was ordering the wedding rings.
They had been planning to remove my daughter from my home.
I looked at Michael.
"How much did they pay you?""
He stared at me.
"Nothing.""
"Try again.""
His jaw tightened.
"Daniel, I have a mortgage. I have two kids. Vanessa offered to help me with a business opportunity.""
"With my daughter's money?""
"No!""
He raised his voice.
"I didn't know they were going to take everything!""
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
"Everything?""
Michael's expression changed.
He had said too much.
Vanessa rushed toward him.
"Shut up!""
One of the security officers stepped between them.
"Ma'am, please stay where you are.""
Michael looked at me helplessly.
"Daniel, I swear I didn't know about the custody thing until recently.""
"How recently?""
He swallowed.
I almost couldn't breathe.
A month ago, he had taken me out for dinner.
He had toasted my upcoming marriage.
He had told me I deserved happiness.
And he had known.
"Why?"" I whispered.
Michael looked down.
"Because I owed money.""
"How much?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, you're allowing Laura to turn this into something it isn't.""
I looked at her.
"Then why does my brother owe you money?""
She pressed her lips together.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely cornered.
Then she did something unexpected.
She reached into the small purse attached to her wedding dress and pulled out her phone.
"I want everyone to listen carefully," she said.
She tapped the screen.
A recording began playing.
At first, I heard static.
Then my own voice.
"She's my daughter. I don't care what happens. I can't keep doing this.""
My stomach dropped.
It sounded like something I'd said.
But I didn't remember saying it.
The recording continued.
A woman's voice spoke.
"Then maybe it's time someone else took responsibility.""
I recognized Vanessa's voice.
Then came my voice again.
"Do whatever you think is best.""
The recording stopped.
Vanessa looked at the security officers.
"That is Daniel authorizing me to make decisions about Sophie. He has been struggling emotionally since his wife's death. I have recordings to prove it.""
I stared at her.
"That conversation never happened.""
She tilted her head.
"Are you sure?""
I looked at Michael.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Because I have several more.""
I felt Sophie bury her face against my neck.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But the message preview caught my attention.
*DANIEL, THIS IS RICHARD REED. YOUR FIANCÉE HAS BEEN LYING TO YOU ABOUT WHY SHE CHOSE YOU. BEFORE YOU LET THE POLICE ARREST HER, YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR WIFE'S FINAL MEDICAL RECORDS.*
I read it again.
Emily's medical records?
Why would Vanessa's father know anything about my late wife's medical records?
A second message arrived.
*SHE DIDN'T MEET YOU BY ACCIDENT.*
I looked up at Vanessa.
Her wedding dress was torn. Her makeup was streaked with tears. But she wasn't crying anymore.
She was watching my phone.
And when she saw my expression, she whispered:
"Daniel, don't believe anything that man tells you.""
I turned the screen toward her.
"Then tell me why he knows about Emily.""
For the first time that morning, Vanessa looked genuinely terrified.
She reached for the phone.
"Give me that.""
I stepped backward.
"Why?""
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because if Richard is contacting you, then he knows what happened before I could stop him.""
The hallway went silent.
Even Michael looked shocked.
I stared at her.
"What happened?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, a hotel employee appeared at the doorway.
"Mr. Carter?""
I turned.
"Yes?""
The employee looked nervous.
"There's a man downstairs asking for you. He says he's Vanessa's father.""
He glanced at Sophie.
Then back at me.
May you like
"He also says he has something that belonged to your late wife.""
And in his hands was a pink ceramic jewelry box.
