Chapter 1: The Bride Behind the Locked Door

Ten minutes before my wedding, I watched the woman I planned to marry slap my six-year-old daughter across the face.

By sunset, two hundred wedding guests would be gone, my marriage license would remain unsigned, and the woman who had promised to love my little girl would reveal just how far she was willing to go to get what she wanted.

My name is Daniel Carter. I was thirty-eight years old, a widower, and a father who had spent three years learning how to raise a daughter without the woman who had once made our house feel like home.

My wife, Emily, had died of cancer when Sophie was three.

I still remembered the hospital room. The smell of antiseptic. The pale afternoon sunlight coming through the blinds. Emily's fingers wrapped around mine as she whispered, "Promise me you'll make sure Sophie always feels loved, Daniel.""

"I promise," I'd answered.

She looked toward our little girl, who was sleeping in a chair with her favorite stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.

"And don't let anyone make her feel like she's a burden.""

Those were the last words Emily ever said to me.

For three years, Sophie and I had been a team.

Then Vanessa Reed entered our lives.

She was thirty-four, elegant, charming, and the kind of woman who remembered everyone's birthday. She brought Sophie expensive dolls, baked cupcakes for her school events, and once drove forty minutes through a thunderstorm to retrieve a stuffed rabbit Sophie had forgotten at a friend's house.

When I proposed, Vanessa cried.

When Sophie hugged her, Vanessa lifted my daughter into her arms.

"I'm going to love you just like my own little girl," she promised.

I believed her.

I wanted to believe her.

That morning, the Grand Magnolia Hotel outside Atlanta looked like something from a fairy tale.

White roses covered the ballroom. Crystal chandeliers scattered light across polished marble floors. Two hundred guests had gathered to celebrate what everyone believed was the beginning of our new family.

My older brother, Michael, was my best man.

At breakfast, he had adjusted my tie and laughed at how nervous I looked.

"Relax, little brother. You're getting married, not walking into an execution.""

"Easy for you to say. You're not the one standing in front of two hundred people.""

Michael grinned.

"Just remember to smile. Vanessa spent a fortune on this wedding.""

I laughed.

I wish I had paid closer attention to the way he said her name.

At 11:20 a.m., the wedding coordinator approached me.

"Mr. Carter, we're ready whenever you are.""

I glanced toward the bridal suite.

"Have you seen Sophie? She was supposed to be with Vanessa.""

The coordinator checked her clipboard.

"I saw her heading upstairs about fifteen minutes ago.""

Something tightened in my stomach.

Sophie had barely eaten breakfast. When Vanessa tried to straighten her dress, she'd pulled away. I'd asked what was wrong, but she had only shaken her head.

I told myself she was nervous.

Now I walked down the hallway toward the bridal suite.

The closer I got, the quieter everything became.

Then I heard crying.

"Please stop! I want my daddy!""

I pushed open the door.

Vanessa stood in front of the dressing mirror, wearing her white wedding gown. Her right hand was tangled in Sophie's hair.

My daughter was standing on her tiptoes, trying to pull away.

Then Vanessa slapped her.

The sound cracked through the room.

Sophie stumbled backward, hitting a chair.

For a moment, my mind refused to understand what I'd seen.

Then I moved.

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!""

Vanessa spun around.

Sophie ran toward me.

"Daddy!""

I dropped to my knees and caught her.

Her little arms wrapped around my neck. Her body trembled against mine.

I gently turned her face toward the window.

A bright red handprint was spreading across her cheek.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

I touched her shoulder.

"Does anything else hurt?""

She shook her head.

Vanessa immediately began crying.

"Daniel, thank God you're here! She was completely out of control. I was trying to discipline her.""

I stared at her.

"You hit her.""

"She wouldn't listen!""

"She's six!""

Vanessa crossed her arms, careful not to wrinkle her expensive wedding dress.

"She needs boundaries. After today, she's going to live in a proper family, and I won't have her running around thinking she can do whatever she wants.""

Sophie buried her face in my jacket.

I stood.

"Take that back.""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"What you just said about my daughter.""

She rolled her eyes.

"Daniel, don't turn this into a scene. We have two hundred people downstairs.""

I looked at the woman I'd planned to spend the rest of my life with.

Then I said four words.

"There will be no wedding.""

Her tears stopped instantly.

"You can't be serious.""

"I'm not marrying you.""

She grabbed my sleeve.

"Daniel, think about what you're doing! Everyone is here. The flowers are paid for. The honeymoon is booked!""

"My daughter is crying because you hit her.""

"She provoked me!""

I pulled my arm away.

Vanessa's lace train caught beneath my shoe and tore.

She screamed.

"You ruined my dress!""

The wedding coordinator rushed into the room.

"What's happening?""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"He attacked me! Call security!""

I didn't answer.

Sophie tugged at my jacket.

"Daddy?""

I knelt again.

"Yes, baby?""

She looked toward Vanessa and then toward the open bridal bag on the dressing table.

"Please don't let her take me.""

My blood went cold.

"Take you where?""

Sophie's bottom lip trembled.

"She said after the wedding, I wouldn't live with you anymore.""

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

"Sophie, stop talking!"" she snapped.

I stepped between them.

"What exactly did you tell my daughter?""

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"She's confused. She's upset because you keep spoiling her.""

But Sophie reached into the pocket of her little pink dress and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this in her bag, Daddy.""

I took it.

It was a printed document.

At the top, I saw the words:

*TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AND CUSTODY AUTHORIZATION.*

Below that was my name.

And beneath my name was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

I stared at it.

I had never signed that document.

Vanessa took one step toward me.

"Give me that.""

I moved it behind my back.

"What is this?""

Her eyes darted toward the door.

Then, for the first time, she stopped pretending to cry.

"Daniel, you don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, my brother Michael appeared in the doorway.

He looked at the paper in my hand.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

May you like

And his first words were:

"Daniel, you weren't supposed to find that today.""
