Chapter 9: The Person Caroline Chose
I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Caroline’s face on that video.
The way she looked at the camera.
The way she looked afraid.
The way she trusted me to protect Emma after she was gone.
And I had failed.
The next morning, I drove to Emma’s old kindergarten.
The school looked exactly the same.
Bright colors.
Children laughing.
Parents holding hands.
A place designed to feel safe.
I hated that safety could be an illusion.
The teacher’s name was Olivia Bennett.
She was standing outside her classroom when she saw me.
Her smile disappeared immediately.
“Daniel?””
I stopped.
“You knew.””
Her expression changed.
“I was wondering when you would come.””
The answer surprised me.
“You were waiting?””
She looked around.
“Not here.””
We went into the empty classroom.
The walls were covered with children’s drawings.
Emma’s drawings.
I saw one on the corner.
A family.
Me.
Emma.
Caroline.
And a large black figure in the background.
I pointed.
“That’s him.””
Olivia nodded.
“She drew that after the incident.””
My stomach tightened.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“Because Caroline asked me not to.””
I laughed.
A painful sound.
“Everyone has that answer.””
“She was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She was protecting Emma.””
Olivia looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“What did Caroline give you?””
Olivia reached into a locked cabinet.
She pulled out a small box.
“This.””
Inside was another flash drive.
My hands went cold.
“The second copy.””
She nodded.
“Caroline said Richard would look for the first one.””
“And she trusted you with this?””
“She trusted me because I wasn’t family.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it explained everything.
Family had secrets.
Family had loyalty.
Family had fear.
But Olivia had only had one responsibility.
Emma.
“What’s on it?””
Olivia looked at the drive.
“The truth.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
But I needed it.
We watched the video together.
This one was different.
It wasn’t Caroline speaking.
It was security footage.
A parking lot.
The night Caroline died.
The image was blurry.
But clear enough.
Caroline’s car.
Michael standing beside it.
Then Richard arriving.
My hands tightened.
Richard approached Caroline.
They argued.
Then Richard grabbed her arm.
Caroline pulled away.
And then something happened.
Emma appeared.
Small.
Tiny.
Running toward her mother.
I covered my mouth.
The little girl on the screen was my daughter.
A child who had been carrying this memory.
Richard turned.
He saw Emma.
And his face changed.
The footage had no sound.
But I knew.
He was afraid.
Because Emma had witnessed him.
Then Caroline ran toward the car.
She pushed Emma inside.
She looked back.
And Richard moved closer.
The screen froze.
Then the video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Olivia whispered:
“She saw enough.””
I stared at the black screen.
“No.””
I stood.
“She saw everything.””
My phone rang.
Richard.
I answered.
“Where did you get the video?””
His voice was calm.
“Hello, Daniel.””
“You hurt my wife.””
Silence.
Then:
“I protected my interests.””
My hands shook.
“You poisoned her.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“I didn’t.””
I froze.
Because I expected denial.
Not that.
“I didn’t poison Caroline.””
“Then who did?””
Another pause.
And then:
“Ask your wife.””
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
She wasn’t in the room.
My blood went cold.
“Where is Vanessa?””
Richard laughed quietly.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“The person closest to Caroline wasn’t the person who betrayed her.””
I felt a chill.
“Then who?””
Richard whispered:
“The person closest to you.””
The call ended.
I ran outside.
I called Vanessa.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
From Vanessa’s phone.
Not a text.
A location.
A place.
Caroline’s old house.
The one we sold after she died.
I stared at the address.
Because there was one thing I suddenly understood.
Richard had spent two years hiding the truth.
But Vanessa had spent two years searching for it.
And if Richard was telling the truth…
Then Vanessa wasn’t the monster Emma thought she was.
But someone else was.
May you like
Someone Emma had seen.
Someone she had been trying to warn me about from the beginning.
