Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Save Me
I didn’t tell Michael I knew.
Not yet.
I ended the call with one sentence.
“We’ll talk tomorrow.””
Then I hung up.
Vanessa stood across from me.
She looked exhausted.
But I couldn’t tell anymore if exhaustion meant guilt or fear.
“You called him.””
She looked surprised.
“You heard that?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I raised my hand.
“I need one night without another explanation.””
She stared at me.
“You don’t trust me.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Where my daughter was sleeping.
“I don’t know who I trust.””
That was the truth.
And somehow it hurt more than anger.
I took Emma to my mother’s house the next morning.
I didn’t tell my mother everything.
Not yet.
I only said Emma needed a few days away.
My mother looked at my face and immediately understood that something was wrong.
Mothers always know.
“Daniel.””
I stopped at the door.
“Yes?””
“Are you finally listening?””
The question hurt.
Because it sounded exactly like Caroline.
I looked away.
“I’m trying.””
My mother nodded.
“Then try harder.””
At noon, Michael arrived.
Alone.
He walked into my mother’s backyard where I was sitting.
For a moment, we just stared at each other.
Two brothers.
Two people who had buried the same woman.
At least, that was what I thought.
“You look angry.””
I stood up.
“You called Vanessa.””
He sighed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she was scared.””
“Of what?””
Michael looked toward the house.
“Of you.””
I laughed.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she be afraid of me?””
“Because she knew you’d choose Emma.””
The answer was so simple that it made me angry.
“You’re protecting her.””
“No.””
“Yes, you are.””
Michael shook his head.
“You’re looking for someone to blame.””
I stepped closer.
“Did Caroline tell you anything before she died?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
I saw it.
And my anger turned into something colder.
“You knew.””
Michael looked down.
“Daniel…”
“You knew.””
He sat on the bench.
“I knew Caroline was worried.””
“About you?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too immediately.
“Then why did Vanessa show me messages saying Emma saw you near Caroline’s car?””
Michael went completely still.
And that was the moment I knew.
Not everything.
But something.
“Where did you get that?””
I stared at him.
“That’s your question?””
Michael rubbed his face.
“I didn’t hurt Caroline.””
“I didn’t ask that.””
“Daniel.””
“Did you see her that night?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
“The night she went to the hospital.””
“Why?””
Michael looked away.
“I was helping her.””
“With what?””
He didn’t answer.
I felt my hands shake.
“Michael.””
He finally looked at me.
“Caroline was investigating something.””
“What?””
“She thought someone was stealing from the medical charity she worked with.””
I blinked.
“What does that have to do with Emma?””
“Nothing.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Caroline asked me not to.””
Again.
That sentence.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone except me had been trusted with the truth.
“She was your wife.””
“I know.””
“She was dying.””
“I know.””
“And you let me believe she just got sick.””
Michael’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because that’s what she wanted.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked away.
“No, that’s not what she wanted.””
Because Caroline had written to Vanessa.
She had written to Michael.
She had warned them.
And somehow, everyone decided I was the one person who couldn’t handle the truth.
“What happened that night?””
Michael looked at me.
“I found Caroline outside the clinic.””
“Alone?””
“Yes.””
“Was she hurt?””
“No.””
“Then why did she end up in the hospital?””
He hesitated.
“Because she collapsed.””
“That’s it?””
Michael looked down.
“No.””
The word was barely audible.
I waited.
Finally, he said:
“Because before she collapsed, she told me someone had followed her.””
My heart dropped.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Michael.””
“I swear.””
He stood.
“She never saw the person clearly.””
“Then why did Vanessa say Emma saw something?””
Michael looked toward the house.
“Because Emma was there.””
The world went quiet.
I felt cold.
“Emma?””
Michael nodded.
“She was in the back seat.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
“Daniel…”
“She was four.””
“I know.””
“She was at home.””
Michael’s face broke.
“No.””
A terrible feeling moved through me.
“Who was watching her?””
Michael didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
He looked away.
And that was enough.
I drove home immediately.
I didn’t care if Vanessa was there.
I didn’t care what she said.
I needed answers from my daughter.
When I arrived, the front door was open.
That scared me.
“Vanessa?””
No answer.
I ran upstairs.
Emma’s room was empty.
Her bed untouched.
Her toys scattered.
Then I heard something.
A voice downstairs.
Vanessa.
Talking on the phone.
“I told you she was the problem.””
I froze.
She continued.
“She remembered more than we expected.””
My blood turned cold.
I stepped closer.
Then I heard the other voice.
A man.
Michael.
“Vanessa, you promised me.””
I stopped breathing.
Because my brother wasn’t calling her.
He was with her.
May you like
And then Vanessa said the words that shattered everything:
“Daniel was never supposed to find out what Emma saw that night.””
