Chapter 6: The Girl Who Remembered Everything

I stood in the hallway.

Unable to move.

Unable to speak.

For several seconds, I convinced myself I had misunderstood.

That the voices were from a television.

That grief had finally broken something inside my head.

Then I heard Michael again.

“You said this would stay buried.””

Vanessa answered.

“And you said you could handle Daniel.””

My hands clenched.

The two people I trusted most were standing downstairs discussing my life like it belonged to them.

I stepped forward.

The floor creaked.

The voices stopped.

A second later, Vanessa appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Her face went pale.

“Daniel.””

Michael turned around.

He looked like a man who had just realized there was no way out.

“What are you doing here?””

I stared at him.

“What am I doing here?””

My voice echoed.

“What are you doing here?””

Nobody answered.

I walked downstairs.

Slowly.

Because if I moved too quickly, I was afraid I would lose control.

“What did Emma see?””

Vanessa looked at Michael.

That was all I needed.

That tiny glance.

That silent conversation.

“You still do it.””

My voice cracked.

“You still look at each other before you answer me.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen.””

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“I listened for two years.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“I listened when you said Emma was grieving.””

Then at Michael.

“I listened when you said Caroline’s death was an accident.””

I shook my head.

“I’m done listening to people who keep the truth from me.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Michael sat down.

“Caroline found evidence.””

“About the charity?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“What kind of evidence?””

“She discovered money was being moved through fake accounts.””

I frowned.

“Who was involved?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“My father.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“My father owned the company that managed the donations.””

The room became silent.

“You knew?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found out after Caroline did.””

“Then why were you helping her?””

“Because she was my friend.””

I almost smiled.

A bitter, broken smile.

“You keep using that word.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did she write that message?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of you?””

“No.””

“Of Michael?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

Toward Emma’s room.

“Of what Emma saw.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“When Caroline went to the clinic that night, Emma was with her.””

I shook my head.

“She wasn’t.””

“She was.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

Her voice broke.

“You left work early that day.””

I froze.

I remembered.

I had.

Caroline had asked me to pick Emma up.

But my boss had called.

A deadline.

A meeting.

One more thing.

“I thought Caroline had her.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She did.””

The guilt hit instantly.

A father’s worst nightmare.

A moment you cannot change.

“So what happened?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Caroline met Michael outside.””

I looked at my brother.

He nodded.

“She asked me to help her.””

“With what?””

“Getting proof.””

“And Emma?””

“She was in the car.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did she see?””

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“She saw someone arguing with Caroline.””

“Who?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then away.

“Your father.””

I stared.

“My father?””

“He followed Caroline there.””

I shook my head.

“My father has been dead for five years.””

Michael went silent.

The room changed.

“What?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Your father’s business partner.””

I felt like the air left my lungs.

“Who?””

Michael whispered the name.

A name I knew.

A name that had been around my family for years.

“Richard Hale.””

The same man who attended my wedding.

The same man who gave the speech at Caroline’s funeral.

The same man who hugged me and told me to be strong.

My hands went numb.

“What did Emma see?””

Michael looked destroyed.

“She saw Richard grab Caroline’s arm.””

I swallowed.

“And then?””

“She screamed.””

“Emma?””

Michael nodded.

“She screamed, and Richard saw her.””

A chill moved through me.

“What happened next?””

Michael looked down.

“Richard threatened Caroline.””

“With what?””

“With Emma.””

I covered my mouth.

No.

No.

Not my daughter.

“He told Caroline that if she went to the police, he would make sure she lost everything.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Caroline was terrified.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Michael answered.

“Because she thought you would go after him.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

“And she was right.””

Because I would have.

I would have destroyed anyone who threatened my family.

But Caroline had made a decision.

She chose silence to protect Emma.

And somehow, that silence had created a different kind of danger.

“What happened to Caroline?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa said:

“She wasn’t killed.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She was poisoned.””

The word hung in the room.

I felt sick.

“No.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“The doctors thought it was related to her illness.””

“But it wasn’t.””

“No.””

“Who poisoned her?””

Michael looked at me.

“We don’t know.””

I stared at the two people in front of me.

Two people who had hidden the truth.

Two people who knew my daughter carried a memory too painful for a child.

Then I heard footsteps.

Small footsteps.

I turned.

Emma stood at the top of the stairs.

Holding Bunny.

Her face was pale.

“Daddy?””

My heart stopped.

“How long have you been there?””

She looked down.

“I heard Mommy’s name.””

I rushed toward her.

But she stepped back.

Not from fear of me.

From fear of the memory.

“Emma.””

She hugged Bunny.

“I remember now.””

I knelt.

“What do you remember?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Mommy told me to hide.””

My breathing stopped.

“From who?””

Emma looked behind me.

At Vanessa.

Then at Michael.

Then she whispered:

“The man who came back.””

A silence filled the house.

“Who came back, sweetheart?””

Emma’s lips trembled.

Then she said a name.

A name that none of us expected.

“Mr. Richard.””

And before I could ask another question, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

A photo.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a picture of Emma sleeping.

Taken tonight.

Inside this house.
