Chapter 7: The $180,000 That Disappeared
For several seconds, I couldn't take my eyes off the withdrawal request.
One hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
Money my mother had left to protect my future.
Money Vanessa had apparently tried to take without my knowledge.
My father picked up the document.
"Is this real?""
Susan Miller nodded.
"It's a genuine request submitted to the financial institution six months ago. However, we still need to establish whether the transaction was completed and where the money went.""
Dad's fingers tightened around the paper.
"Who approved it?""
"The request was processed under a power of attorney submitted with the application. The bank flagged certain inconsistencies, but the funds were partially released pending further verification.""
Daniel immediately leaned forward.
"Partially?""
Susan nodded.
"Approximately sixty thousand dollars was transferred before the account was restricted.""
I felt sick.
"Where did it go?""
Susan turned another page.
"The receiving account was registered under a company called V.C. Property Solutions.""
Dad frowned.
"What's that?""
Susan looked at Daniel.
He pulled out his phone and searched through the company records.
Then his expression changed.
"Michael, this company is registered to Vanessa.""
Dad stared at him.
"You're telling me my wife opened a company using money from my daughter's inheritance?""
"We need the complete banking records to establish the exact movement of funds," Daniel replied.
"But that's what the available documentation suggests.""
I pushed my chair backward.
The legs scraped loudly against the kitchen floor.
"She stole from me.""
Dad stood.
"Emily, sit down.""
"No!""
My voice broke.
"She stole from Mom. She stole from me. And she made me look like a violent person because she didn't want anyone asking questions!""
Tears blurred my vision.
"I was seventeen. I was worried about college applications, school, and whether Dad was going to be home for dinner. I had no idea someone was trying to take my future away.""
Dad approached me.
"You're right.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"How could you not know?""
He looked devastated.
"I trusted her.""
"So did I.""
That was the part that hurt most.
I had trusted Vanessa enough to leave my bedroom door open. I'd trusted her enough to tell her about my friends, my grades, and the things that scared me.
I'd even trusted her to look after my mother's belongings.
And she'd used that trust against me.
Daniel gathered the financial documents.
"Michael, I recommend that you contact the bank immediately, revoke any questionable authorization, and request that the remaining funds be frozen while the matter is investigated.""
Dad nodded.
"Do whatever is necessary.""
Susan placed another paper on the table.
"There's something else.""
We all looked at her.
"The withdrawal request included a statement explaining why the money was needed.""
She turned the page toward us.
I read the sentence.
The beneficiary has voluntarily agreed to release the funds to support household expenses and future family needs.
I shook my head.
"I never agreed to that.""
"I know," Susan said.
"That's why we're investigating.""
Dad stared at the document.
"Vanessa claimed Emily agreed?""
"Yes.""
I remembered the day Vanessa had brought me those papers.
She'd stood beside the kitchen counter, holding a stack of documents.
"Just sign here, sweetheart. They're routine forms.""
I'd been late for school.
I'd signed where she pointed.
She'd smiled and told me to have a good day.
I suddenly remembered another detail.
"She asked me for my student ID.""
Dad looked up.
"When?""
"That morning. She said she needed it for a school form.""
Susan exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"That could be relevant. We should document everything you remember.""
Before I could answer, Dad's phone rang.
The screen displayed Vanessa's name.
He answered.
"Where are you?""
Her voice was sharp.
"At my sister's. And I want to know why you have people going through my private documents.""
"Did you withdraw sixty thousand dollars from Emily's trust?""
Silence.
Then Vanessa laughed.
"Is that what this is about?""
"Answer me.""
"Michael, that money was used for family expenses.""
"Without Emily's permission?""
"She signed the documents!""
"She was seventeen!""
"She understood perfectly well what she was signing.""
I felt my hands curl into fists.
Dad's voice became colder.
"Did you create V.C. Property Solutions?""
Vanessa stopped speaking.
Then she said, "You don't understand how much I've sacrificed for this family.""
"That wasn't my question.""
"I spent six years looking after your children. I put my own life on hold.""
"Did you take Emily's money?""
Her voice suddenly rose.
"I used it to keep this family together!""
Dad closed his eyes.
"That's not an answer.""
Vanessa began crying.
"You've always chosen Emily over me. Even now, you're sitting there with lawyers, treating me like some stranger.""
Dad looked at me.
Then he spoke.
"Emily is my daughter. She was your responsibility when you married me. You were supposed to protect her.""
Vanessa's crying stopped.
"Don't pretend she's innocent.""
"She's a child.""
"She's almost eighteen!""
"Exactly. And you've spent six months trying to get your hands on what her mother left her.""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"You don't know what you're doing, Michael.""
"Then explain it.""
She hung up.
Dad stared at his phone.
A moment later, a message arrived.
It was from Vanessa.
*If you continue this, I'll tell everyone what Laura did before she died.*
My stomach dropped.
Dad read the message.
"What is she talking about?""
I looked at him.
"Do you think Mom did something wrong?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Susan carefully placed the phone on the table.
"Don't respond to that message. Preserve it.""
Daniel nodded.
"Any threat involving the estate should be documented.""
But I couldn't stop thinking about those words.
What could Vanessa possibly know about my mother?
That evening, Dad arranged for me and Noah to stay with Aunt Rachel for a few nights while the adults dealt with the legal situation.
I didn't want to leave.
Not after everything.
But Rachel was my mother's younger sister, and she had always made me feel safe.
When she arrived, she hugged me tightly.
"Sweetheart, I heard what happened.""
I buried my face against her shoulder.
"I'm so tired, Aunt Rachel.""
"I know.""
She looked at Dad.
"Michael, we need to talk.""
Dad nodded.
"Of course.""
Rachel helped Noah pack his things.
Before we left, I went upstairs to collect my mother's letter.
I tucked it inside my backpack.
Then I noticed something on my bedside table.
A small photograph.
It showed Mom holding me in her arms.
I turned it over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Emily's first birthday. The beginning of everything beautiful.
I smiled sadly.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another unknown number.
This time, it was a photograph.
It showed an old hospital document.
At the top was my mother's name.
And underneath it was a date.
The date of her death.
The message beneath the photograph read:
*Your mother didn't die believing Vanessa was trustworthy. She discovered what Vanessa was doing before she passed away. Ask Aunt Rachel about the envelope she was supposed to keep.*
I stared at the screen.
Then I slowly turned toward my aunt.
"Rachel?""
She was standing by the front door.
Her expression changed when she saw my phone.
"Where did you get that?""
I showed her the message.
Her face lost all color.
May you like
And before I could ask another question, she whispered:
"Oh, Emily. I thought that envelope was gone.""
