Chapter 4: The Second Agreement

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

My father's phone remained on speaker, and Uncle Robert's breathing was the only sound coming through it.

Dad tightened his grip on the device.

"Robert, what second agreement?""

Another pause.

"Michael, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"Not over the phone.""

Dad laughed once, without humor.

"You just told me not to let Emily see a document with my signature on it. What exactly am I supposed to think?""

Vanessa stood near the doorway, clutching her purse.

Daniel moved closer to my father.

"Michael, ask him where the original is.""

Dad repeated the question.

Robert sighed.

"It's in my briefcase.""

"Where's your briefcase?""

"At my office.""

"Then bring it here.""

"I can't.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Why not?""

"Because I signed something I shouldn't have signed.""

Vanessa suddenly interrupted.

"Robert, stop talking!""

The phone went silent.

Then my uncle said something that made my stomach twist.

"Vanessa, you told me Michael already knew.""

My father slowly turned toward his wife.

"Is that true?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"He's confused. Robert has been under a lot of stress.""

"Don't speak for me," Robert snapped through the phone.

Dad closed his eyes briefly.

"Robert, listen carefully. If you've used my signature on anything without my permission, I need to know now.""

"I didn't forge your signature.""

"Then why did you tell me there was a second agreement?""

"Because I signed it as your representative.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"On what authority?""

Robert hesitated.

"Michael gave me a power of attorney last year.""

My father frowned.

"I gave you access to some business accounts while I was recovering from surgery. That authorization was limited.""

"That's what Vanessa said.""

Dad's face changed.

"What did Vanessa say?""

Robert didn't answer.

Daniel held out his hand for the phone.

"Robert, this is Daniel Harris. I need you to preserve every original document, email, and communication relating to the property. Do not destroy or alter anything.""

"Daniel, you don't understand the situation.""

"Then help us understand it.""

Robert exhaled.

"Vanessa said Michael wanted to restructure the estate. She told me Emily was going to receive the house outright, and that Michael wanted to prevent future disputes.""

Dad stared at the floor.

"That's a lie.""

"I know that now.""

Vanessa shook her head furiously.

"You're making things up, Robert!""

My father looked at her.

"Then why did you tell him I wanted this?""

She had no answer.

Daniel asked Robert to send copies of the agreement to his office immediately.

Then Dad ended the call.

For a moment, I thought he might throw the phone against the wall.

Instead, he placed it carefully on his desk.

"Daniel, what does this mean?""

"It means we need to verify the scope of the authorization Robert had, examine the agreement, and determine whether any documents were filed or relied upon.""

"Can he transfer my house?""

"Not simply because he claims he can. We need to review the actual documents and applicable property records.""

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

"You hear that? Nothing has happened. You're all treating me like I've stolen something.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Then you'll have no objection to answering a few questions.""

"Of course I have an objection. This is my family!""

I looked at her.

"You didn't seem to remember that when you slapped me.""

She turned sharply.

"Emily, enough!""

"No. You've said enough for six years.""

Dad moved toward me.

"Emily, sweetheart—"

I stepped away.

He stopped immediately.

The word sweetheart felt strange coming from him.

He hadn't called me that since I was little.

Daniel gathered the papers.

"I suggest everyone stays calm. I'll arrange for the documents to be reviewed properly.""

Vanessa pointed at him.

"You have no right to tell us what to do.""

"I haven't told you what to do. I've explained what needs to happen.""

She turned to Michael.

"If you let this woman destroy our marriage, you'll regret it.""

Dad looked exhausted.

"Nobody is destroying our marriage except the person who arranged this.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

Then she looked at Kayla.

"Come upstairs.""

Kayla didn't move.

"Mom...""

"Now.""

"No.""

Vanessa stared at her daughter.

For the first time, Kayla didn't lower her eyes.

"I'm staying.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Kayla began crying.

"You told me Emily would just leave for a few days.""

Vanessa looked away.

"You don't understand adult matters.""

"I understand that you told me to lie.""

The room fell silent.

Kayla wiped her face with her sleeve.

"You said Dad would be so angry that he wouldn't ask questions. You said he'd send Emily away, and then you could finish everything.""

I stared at her.

"Why did you agree?""

She looked at me.

"Because you always got everything.""

I almost laughed.

"Like what?""

"The attention. Dad's love. The house.""

I looked around the office.

"You thought I was taking something from you?""

Kayla's voice cracked.

"Mom said Dad was going to leave everything to you. She said when you turned eighteen, you'd have control of the house and we'd have nowhere to go.""

My father looked stunned.

"Kayla, I never said that.""

"I know that now.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Stop twisting everything!""

Kayla flinched.

Then she said something I wasn't expecting.

"Mom, you told me if Emily stayed, we would lose everything.""

Vanessa slapped the wall with her palm.

"Because that's what was going to happen!""

Dad stared at her.

"Why?""

Vanessa's shoulders rose and fell.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell us the truth.

Instead, she grabbed her purse.

"I'm done with this conversation.""

She walked past Dad and disappeared down the hallway.

The front door slammed seconds later.

Nobody followed her.

Daniel remained until nearly ten that night, collecting copies of the documents and explaining the next steps to my father.

Before leaving, he pulled me aside.

"Emily, I want you to understand something. Whatever has happened here, you are not responsible for the adults' decisions.""

I nodded.

"Thank you.""

"And don't sign anything else without independent advice. Not even something that appears ordinary.""

I looked down.

"I won't.""

After Daniel left, Dad sat at the kitchen table.

Noah was asleep upstairs.

Kayla had locked herself in her bedroom.

I stood by the sink, staring at the broken glass that someone had finally swept away.

Dad approached quietly.

"Emily?""

I didn't turn.

"Yes?""

"I need to apologize.""

"You already did.""

"Not properly.""

He pulled out a chair.

"Please sit.""

I remained standing.

He swallowed.

"I saw you standing here, with a red mark on your face, and I still questioned whether you were telling the truth. I let Vanessa convince me that you were dangerous.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He rubbed his eyes.

"Because I wanted to believe my marriage was okay. I kept telling myself that every argument between you and Vanessa was just a misunderstanding.""

"And what about Kayla?""

"I thought she was adjusting to having a stepsister.""

I let out a shaky breath.

"While I was adjusting to having a stepmother who didn't want me.""

Dad lowered his head.

That night, I went upstairs without hugging him.

I wasn't ready.

When I entered my bedroom, my phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Emily, this is Robert. Your father doesn't know the whole truth. I need to tell you what Vanessa did before she married him.*

A second message arrived.

*And there's something about your mother's death that you need to know.*

I dropped my phone onto the bed.

May you like

My mother had been dead for eight years.

And suddenly, the house I thought I understood had become a place full of secrets.
