Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Daniel arrived at 7:38 p.m.

He was a tall man in his early sixties with silver hair, a dark blue suit, and the kind of expression that made people stop talking when he entered a room.

My father had known him for nearly twenty years.

Daniel had handled his business contracts, property purchases, and estate planning.

When Dad showed him the document, he didn't immediately speak.

He adjusted his glasses and examined the first page.

Then the second.

Finally, he looked at Vanessa.

"Where did you get this?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"It was prepared months ago.""

"By whom?""

"I don't remember.""

Daniel looked at Michael.

"Did you authorize this transfer?""

"No.""

"Did you witness Emily signing it?""

"No.""

Daniel turned another page.

"Then we have a serious problem.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"This is being blown out of proportion. Emily signed the document. Robert witnessed it. We were simply trying to organize the family estate.""

Daniel placed the papers on the desk.

"Emily was seventeen when this was supposedly signed.""

"She understood what she was signing.""

I stepped forward.

"No, I didn't.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Don't pretend you didn't know. You signed the papers yourself.""

"I signed what you told me was a school permission form.""

"That's convenient.""

Daniel raised one hand.

"Mrs. Collins, please. Let me ask a few questions.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

He turned toward me.

"Emily, do you remember signing anything in this house three months ago?""

"Yes. Vanessa put several papers in front of me. I was getting ready for school, and she said they needed my signature.""

"Did you read them?""

"No. I thought they were school forms.""

"Did anyone explain that they involved property?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then he asked Noah to show him the original kitchen recording.

My little brother sat on the edge of the office sofa.

"I have it," he said.

Daniel watched the footage carefully.

He paused when Kayla removed the key.

Then he watched Vanessa whisper to her.

He replayed that section twice.

Finally, he looked at Dad.

"Michael, this recording should be preserved in its original format. Don't edit it or send it around.""

Dad nodded.

"Understood.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"So now we're building a criminal case against a sixteen-year-old?""

Daniel didn't look impressed.

"We're determining what happened.""

"She's a child!""

"Then the adults involved should have been more careful.""

Kayla lowered her head.

I looked at her.

For the first time, I wondered whether she'd understood how far Vanessa intended to take things.

Maybe Kayla thought the worst that could happen was that I would be grounded.

Maybe she believed Dad would send me to Aunt Rachel's for a few days, just as Vanessa had promised.

But she'd watched her mother slap me.

She'd watched me gather my books from the floor.

And she'd said nothing until Noah brought out the video.

I couldn't pretend she was innocent.

Daniel examined the signature.

"Emily, can you provide examples of your normal signature?""

I nodded.

He handed me a blank sheet of paper.

I wrote my name three times.

He compared it with the document.

"The signatures are similar," he said, "but that doesn't establish authenticity.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Exactly. So there's no proof I did anything wrong.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"There's also no proof this transfer is valid.""

Dad stood up.

"Can we stop it?""

"First, I need to understand the underlying trust arrangement. Then I'll contact the title company and verify whether any related documents were filed.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"The title company?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because if someone attempted to transfer an interest in the property without proper authorization, we need to know whether that attempt went anywhere.""

She looked at Michael.

"You're seriously doing this to me?""

He stared back.

"You helped accuse my daughter of attacking someone when the recording proves otherwise. You slapped her. You tried to throw her out of my house. And now I find documents with her signature that she says she never knowingly gave.""

His voice cracked.

"Tell me what I'm supposed to think.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Dad didn't answer.

She turned toward me.

"You must be very happy, Emily.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

"I'm just tired.""

She scoffed.

"Of course. You're always the victim.""

I took a step forward.

"Do you know what I wanted tonight? I wanted Dad to believe me. That's all. I wanted him to ask one question before deciding I was a violent person who needed to be thrown out.""

My eyes burned.

"I didn't want your money. I didn't want your room. I didn't want your life. I just wanted to feel like I belonged in my own home.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Noah got up from the sofa.

He walked over and slipped his hand into mine.

"She does belong here," he said.

I squeezed his hand.

Daniel cleared his throat.

"There's another matter.""

Everyone turned.

He held up the handwritten note from the envelope.

It was addressed to Vanessa.

The handwriting was unfamiliar to me.

But the words were clear.

Once Emily is out of the house, the transfer can be completed without further complications. Make sure Michael doesn't interfere until everything is finalized.

There was no signature.

Dad read it twice.

"Who wrote this?""

Vanessa snatched the paper.

"It's nothing.""

"Give it back.""

She held it against her chest.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

Her eyes darted toward the door.

Daniel stood.

"Mrs. Collins, I strongly recommend that you preserve every document related to this matter.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You're threatening me now?""

"I'm advising you not to make the situation worse.""

Dad looked at her.

"Who was supposed to complete the transfer?""

She said nothing.

Then Kayla began crying.

"Mom, please. Just tell him.""

Vanessa turned toward her daughter.

"Not another word.""

Kayla shook her head.

"You said everything would be okay.""

"Kayla!""

"You said Emily would leave, Dad would sign the rest, and we wouldn't have to worry about the house anymore!""

My stomach dropped.

Dad slowly approached Kayla.

"Sign what?""

She covered her mouth.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

"Go upstairs.""

But Kayla pulled away.

"No! I'm tired of lying!""

Her voice echoed through the office.

She looked at Dad.

"Mom said Uncle Robert was helping her. He said he could get the property documents changed if Emily wasn't around to challenge them.""

Dad went completely still.

"Robert?""

Kayla nodded.

"He came here when you were at work. They talked in the kitchen.""

Daniel immediately asked, "When?""

"Last Thursday.""

I remembered that day.

I had come home from school early because my chemistry teacher was sick.

Vanessa had told me Uncle Robert was visiting a client and didn't want to be disturbed.

I hadn't questioned it.

Kayla wiped her face.

"Mom said Uncle Robert would get paid after the house was transferred.""

Dad's voice dropped.

"Paid by whom?""

Kayla looked at Vanessa.

Then she whispered, "Mom.""

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

"That's enough!""

She grabbed her purse from the desk and headed for the stairs.

Dad moved in front of her.

"You're not leaving until we finish this conversation.""

"Move, Michael.""

"Where is Robert now?""

"I don't know!""

Dad reached for his phone.

"Then I'll call him.""

Vanessa's face turned white.

"No!""

That one word was louder than anything she'd said all evening.

Dad stopped.

He stared at her.

And then he asked the question that seemed to break whatever control she still had over the room.

"Vanessa, what exactly did you promise my brother?""

She looked at him for several seconds.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

"Ask him why he needed the money.""

Dad dialed his brother's number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

"Michael?""

Dad put the call on speaker.

"Robert. We need to talk about the property documents.""

Silence.

Then my uncle said something that made Daniel immediately reach for the phone.

"Michael, listen to me. Whatever Vanessa told you, don't let Emily see the second agreement.""

My father stared at the screen.

"What second agreement?""

There was a long pause.

Then Uncle Robert whispered:

"Because that one has your signature on it.""

May you like

And suddenly, the room wasn't just silent.

It was terrified.
