Chapter 9: The Letter That Named the Killer
The drive to Richmond felt endless.
Dad drove.
Daniel sat in the passenger seat.
Lucas and I were in the back, separated by less than two feet but carrying twenty-five years of distance between us.
Nobody spoke for the first twenty minutes.
Finally, Lucas broke the silence.
"Do you remember Mom?""
I looked out the window.
"Only little things.""
"Like what?""
"Her perfume. The way she sang while cooking. She used to brush my hair before bed.""
Lucas looked down.
"I don't remember her at all.""
I turned toward him.
"I'm sorry.""
He shook his head.
"Don't be. You didn't take her away from me.""
It was the first kind thing he had said.
I reached into my bag and pulled out the photograph of our mother holding me as a baby.
"Do you want to see her?""
Lucas took it carefully.
He stared at her face.
Then his eyes filled.
"She looks happy.""
"She was.""
He ran his thumb over the edge of the photograph.
"I spent my whole life thinking she didn't want me.""
I shook my head.
"She wanted both of us.""
Lucas nodded.
Then he whispered:
"I wish I'd known her.""
I reached over and took his hand.
For a moment, we were simply two people grieving the same woman.
Then Dad's voice came from the front.
"We're here.""
The storage facility stood behind a chain-link fence on the outskirts of the city.
Rows of metal doors stretched beneath harsh fluorescent lights.
Thomas was waiting beside the security office.
He looked exhausted.
"Michael.""
Dad climbed out.
"Where's Richard?""
"Inside. The police arrived before he could remove anything.""
"Did they arrest him?""
"Not yet. They're questioning him.""
I looked toward the building.
"Where's the letter?""
Thomas pointed down the corridor.
"Unit 214.""
We followed him.
The metal door was already open.
Inside stood several filing cabinets, cardboard boxes, and a small wooden desk.
A uniformed officer stood beside a man in a dark suit.
Richard Hale.
He looked older than he had sounded on the phone, with silver hair and a thin mouth.
When he saw Lucas, his expression changed.
"Lucas.""
Lucas didn't acknowledge him.
Thomas approached the officer.
"This is the family.""
The officer nodded.
"You're free to examine the documents, but don't remove anything. We're still processing the evidence.""
Dad stepped inside.
"Where's Claire's letter?""
Thomas pointed toward a small locked cabinet.
"That one.""
Daniel approached it.
There was a silver lock on the front.
I looked at the key in my hand.
The tag still carried my name.
I inserted it.
It turned smoothly.
The cabinet opened.
Inside was a wooden box wrapped in faded blue cloth.
My hands trembled as I lifted it.
On the lid was a handwritten message.
For my children, when they are old enough to understand.
I opened it.
Inside were two envelopes.
One addressed to Emily.
The other addressed to Lucas.
Beneath them was a small notebook and a flash drive.
I handed Lucas his envelope.
He stared at it.
"She wrote my name.""
I nodded.
"She knew you'd find it.""
We opened the letters together.
Mine began:
My darling Emily,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found its way to you. I am sorry that I could not protect you from the people who believed your life belonged to them.
My eyes blurred.
I kept reading.
*Your grandfather wanted control over everything. The company. The family.
Your future. He believed that money gave him the right to decide who deserved to be loved.*
I looked at Lucas.
He was reading his own letter silently.
Mine continued.
I discovered that Arthur had arranged Daniel's disappearance. I also discovered that he had paid someone inside the hospital to falsify the records concerning your brother.
My heart pounded.
I confronted him. He told me that if I revealed the truth, both children would disappear from my life.
I stopped.
Dad stood beside me.
"Keep reading, sweetheart.""
I wiped my face.
I made one mistake. I trusted someone I thought was my friend.
I looked at Vanessa's name in my mind.
But the next paragraph contained something unexpected.
The person I trusted was not Vanessa.
I frowned.
What?
It was Richard Hale.
I slowly raised my eyes.
Richard was standing near the officer.
He looked at me.
Then he looked away.
I continued.
Richard helped Arthur arrange the adoption. He also helped me create the inheritance trust so that my children would have something that could never be taken from them. But when he discovered I had evidence of Arthur's crimes, he betrayed me.
Lucas lowered his letter.
"Mine says the same thing.""
Daniel turned toward Richard.
"Is that true?""
Richard didn't answer.
Dad stepped forward.
"You helped my father?""
Richard sighed.
"I was young. I made mistakes.""
"You falsified legal records!""
"I was following instructions.""
"That's what Vanessa said!""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Vanessa is a criminal. Don't compare me to her.""
The officer stepped between them.
"Sir, I need you to remain calm.""
I returned to the letter.
The final paragraph was shorter.
There is one person who knows exactly what happened the night I died. He was present in the hospital. He signed the final treatment authorization. And he was the last person I saw before I lost consciousness.
My hands began shaking.
A name appeared at the bottom.
*ARTHUR CARTER.*
Dad stared.
"My father?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"That's what I always suspected.""
But something else was written beneath the signature.
A second sentence.
If Arthur is already dead, the person who carried out his final instructions is still alive.
I read it twice.
Then I turned toward Thomas.
"Who carried out his final instructions?""
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"I don't know.""
Lucas held up the flash drive.
"Maybe this tells us.""
The officer allowed Thomas to connect it to a laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were several audio recordings, scanned documents, and photographs.
Thomas opened the first recording.
A man's voice filled the small storage unit.
It was Arthur Carter.
Even though I'd never met him, I recognized the voice from an old family video.
"Make sure Claire understands the consequences. If she goes to the police, neither child will inherit anything.""
Another voice answered.
"Understood.""
Dad leaned closer.
"Who is that?""
Thomas increased the volume.
Arthur continued.
"The girl stays with Michael. The boy goes to the Hale family. Daniel remains dead. And Claire...""
There was a pause.
Then Arthur said:
"Make certain she doesn't wake up.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Dad looked as if he might collapse.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Lucas stared at the laptop.
Then Thomas opened another file.
It contained a scanned payment record.
A transfer of $150,000 had been made the morning after my mother's death.
The recipient's name was clearly visible.
*MICHAEL CARTER.*
My father.
I stared at the screen.
"No.""
Dad stepped backward.
"That's not possible.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Michael?""
Dad shook his head.
"I never received that money.""
Thomas enlarged the document.
The account number belonged to my father's personal bank account.
The authorization carried his signature.
Lucas looked at Dad.
"You knew?""
"No!""
"Then why is your name on the transfer?""
Dad grabbed the laptop.
"Someone forged it!""
Richard suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
He adjusted his jacket.
"Now we're getting somewhere.""
Dad glared at him.
"What does that mean?""
Richard looked directly at me.
"It means your father wasn't the innocent man you've believed him to be.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Watch your mouth.""
Richard smiled.
"Ask Michael where he was the night Claire died.""
Dad's face drained of color.
Then Richard delivered the accusation that shattered the room.
"Your father was the last person to visit Claire before her final treatment. And he signed the authorization himself.""
I turned toward Dad.
He looked at me.
His lips trembled.
"Emily, I can explain.""
I shook my head.
"Did you sign it?""
He didn't answer.
"Did you know what they were going to give her?""
His eyes filled with tears.
Then he whispered:
"I thought it was medicine.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
Dad looked at Daniel.
"Your father told me it was a treatment that would save her.""
Daniel grabbed him by the collar.
"You trusted him?""
"I loved her!""
"You killed her!""
"I DIDN'T KNOW!""
The officer pulled Daniel away.
I stood frozen.
My father had signed the document that authorized my mother's final treatment.
He had received money afterward.
And now he was claiming he had been deceived.
Richard looked at me.
"There's one more recording.""
Thomas opened the final audio file.
A different voice emerged.
A woman's voice.
Vanessa's.
"I did everything Arthur asked. But Michael doesn't know the truth. He believes Claire's death was an accident.""
A man's voice answered.
"Good. Keep it that way. And make sure Emily never sees the original documents.""
Then Vanessa asked:
"What about the twins?""
The man replied:
"One will inherit the company. The other will inherit the guilt.""
The recording ended.
I looked at Richard.
"Who was that man?""
He didn't answer.
The officer approached him.
"Mr. Hale, you're coming with us.""
Richard barely reacted.
Instead, he looked at me.
"Emily, before you decide who deserves your hatred, you should know something.""
He leaned closer.
"Your mother left one final instruction in her original will.""
"What instruction?""
His eyes shifted toward Dad.
"She named Michael as the person responsible for protecting both children. But she also included a condition.""
I waited.
Richard continued.
"If he ever discovered the truth and chose to hide it, the entire Carter estate would transfer to someone else.""
Dad went pale.
"Who?""
Richard looked at me.
"Vanessa.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"That makes no sense.""
Richard smiled faintly.
"Your grandfather designed it that way. He wanted Vanessa to have everything if Michael failed.""
Thomas immediately opened another document.
Then his expression changed.
"Wait.""
He looked at Dad.
"Michael, there's something you need to see.""
He turned the laptop toward us.
A final amendment to the will appeared.
It had been signed two days before Claire died.
And beside the signature was a clause stating that the transfer would become effective only if Michael had knowingly concealed the truth about Claire's death.
Dad stared at the screen.
Then he whispered:
"I never knew this existed.""
I looked at him.
Neither did I.
But Thomas was already scrolling through the attached legal notes.
His face became increasingly pale.
"Emily...""
"What?""
He turned the laptop toward me.
"The estate hasn't been transferred to Vanessa.""
"Why?""
Thomas swallowed.
"Because Claire added another condition. If Vanessa participated in any attempt to conceal the truth, she would lose every claim to the estate.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Then who gets it?""
Thomas looked at me and Lucas.
"Both of you.""
Then he opened the final attachment.
It was a document containing a recent handwritten note.
The handwriting belonged to my mother.
If my children have finally found each other, tell them the truth about the man who raised them.
Below it was one final sentence.
*Michael Carter is not the man who signed your father's original death certificate.*
Dad looked up sharply.
"What?""
Daniel stared at him.
"Michael, what does that mean?""
Thomas slowly opened the death certificate.
The name of the person who had officially identified Daniel's burned body wasn't Michael's.
It was Arthur Carter.
But the witness signature beneath it belonged to someone none of us expected.
*Richard Hale.*
And Richard was already gone.
The officer's handcuffs lay on the table.
The storage unit door stood open.
But the man who had spent twenty-five years hiding the truth had disappeared into the darkness outside.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
You found the letters. Good.
Then another message arrived.
Now ask your father why he has been receiving money from a dead man's account for eight years.
I looked at Dad.
He was staring at his phone.
And I realized he had received the exact same message.
May you like
*The money hadn't stopped coming.*
*Someone was still paying him to keep a secret.*
