Chapter 3: The Signature That Exposed Everything
Dad put the phone on speaker.
"Thomas, explain exactly what you're saying.""
The attorney's voice was steady, but I could hear the urgency beneath it.
"Three years ago, someone submitted a power of attorney document claiming your late wife had authorized Vanessa to manage Emily's inheritance.""
Dad looked down at the photocopy.
"That's the document I'm holding.""
"Yes. But there's a problem.""
"What problem?""
"The signature was supposedly witnessed by a notary named Daniel Brooks. I contacted his office this morning because the document was being reviewed as part of a routine audit.""
Vanessa suddenly looked toward the front door.
Thomas continued.
"Daniel Brooks died two years before that document was signed.""
Silence.
I stared at the phone.
Dad slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you hear that?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know anything about this.""
"Thomas, who submitted the document?""
"Vanessa Carter.""
My stepmother's face twisted.
"That's ridiculous!""
The attorney continued.
"There's more. The trust wasn't closed. The assets were transferred into a temporary holding account under a different name. The bank flagged the account after discovering several unauthorized withdrawals.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"How much?""
"Approximately eight hundred and sixty thousand dollars.""
My stomach dropped.
Eight hundred and sixty thousand.
Vanessa immediately raised her voice.
"That's a lie! I never took that money!""
Thomas answered calmly.
"Then you should have no problem explaining the transfers.""
She looked at me.
"You think you're clever now, don't you?""
I didn't respond.
Dad walked toward her.
"Where did the money go?""
"I don't know!""
"You signed the documents.""
"I was helping your wife!""
"My wife is dead!""
His voice cracked.
For the first time, I saw tears in his eyes.
"You used her name after she died?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Michael, you have no idea what I went through.""
"Stop talking about yourself!""
He pointed toward the safe.
"You stole from my daughter. You lied about her mother. And you threw her out of this house.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Because she was destroying our marriage!""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"You heard me.""
She stepped toward me.
"Ever since you came back, Michael has spent every minute worrying about you. Your problems. Your bills.
Your little disappointments. Everything revolves around Emily.""
Dad stared at her.
"She's my daughter.""
"And I'm your wife!""
"You were supposed to be an adult.""
Vanessa laughed.
"An adult? I was the only person keeping this family together!""
I shook my head.
"You made sure I felt unwelcome every single day.""
"Because you were never supposed to stay!""
Her words landed like a slap.
Dad stepped between us.
"Explain that.""
Vanessa looked away.
But the damage was already done.
"What do you mean I wasn't supposed to stay?"" I asked.
She pressed her lips together.
Dad's voice dropped.
"Vanessa.""
She threw her hands up.
"Fine! Your daughter was supposed to move out after two weeks. I agreed to let her stay temporarily. That's all.""
I stared at her.
"You're the one who told Dad I could come home.""
"Because I had no choice!""
Dad looked confused.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she pointed at me.
"Your daughter was asking questions about the inheritance. She found an old photograph of your wife with the trust attorney. She wouldn't stop digging.""
I frowned.
"I never knew about the trust until today.""
"Don't lie!""
"I'm not lying!""
Dad turned toward Vanessa.
"When did she supposedly ask you about it?""
"Months ago.""
"What exactly did she ask?""
Vanessa's eyes moved between us.
"She wanted to know why her mother had left her money.""
I shook my head.
"I never said that.""
Dad studied her face.
Then he asked quietly:
"Did you know Emily would turn twenty-five this year?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Did you know the trust would become fully accessible on her twenty-fifth birthday?""
Still nothing.
Dad's expression changed.
"That's why you wanted her out.""
Vanessa finally snapped.
"Yes!""
The word echoed through the living room.
"Yes, Michael! I wanted her out! Because the moment she received that money, everything would change!""
I felt sick.
"So you stole from me before I even knew I had anything?""
Vanessa pointed at me.
"You had everything! You had your mother's money, your father's attention, and this beautiful home waiting for you whenever you wanted it!""
I looked around the room.
The expensive furniture.
The crystal chandelier.
The paintings.
Then I looked at my torn shirt.
"I had nowhere to sleep last night.""
She rolled her eyes.
"Don't be dramatic.""
Dad moved toward the table.
"Give me your phone.""
Vanessa frowned.
"What?""
"Your phone. Now.""
"Why?""
"Because Thomas is going to need every message, email, and document connected to the trust.""
She stepped backward.
"I don't have to give you anything.""
Dad held out his hand.
"Vanessa.""
"No!""
She suddenly grabbed her leather bag from the floor and rushed toward the hallway.
Dad caught her arm.
"Stop!""
"LET GO OF ME!""
She twisted away, sending a small collection of papers flying across the marble.
I bent down and picked them up.
Most were bank statements.
One was a hotel reservation.
Another was a printed email.
The subject line read:
*FINAL PAYMENT — CARTER FAMILY TRUST TRANSFER.*
I scanned the first paragraph.
My hands began shaking.
There was a payment of $200,000 scheduled for the following morning.
The recipient's name wasn't Vanessa's.
It was someone named Richard Hale.
I looked up.
"Who's Richard Hale?""
Vanessa froze.
Dad turned toward me.
"Let me see that.""
He read the document.
Then he looked at his wife.
"Who is Richard Hale?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"He's nobody.""
"Why are you sending him two hundred thousand dollars?""
"I wasn't!""
Dad held up the paper.
"Your signature is right here.""
She looked at me with a hatred so intense it made my skin crawl.
"You shouldn't have touched that.""
I took a step backward.
"Why? Who is he?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Dad called Thomas again.
"There's another name. Richard Hale. Two hundred thousand dollars scheduled for tomorrow.""
The attorney went silent.
Then his voice changed.
"Michael, do not let that transaction go through.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard Hale is the attorney who represented Vanessa during her first marriage.""
Dad frowned.
"What does that have to do with Emily's inheritance?""
Thomas took a breath.
"Everything. I just checked the original trust records. Richard Hale was involved in a legal dispute involving Emily's mother more than twenty-five years ago.""
My heart started racing.
"Why?""
Thomas hesitated.
Then he said something I would never forget.
"Because your mother accused him of helping someone falsify your birth records.""
I stared at the phone.
Dad looked at me.
"What birth records?""
Thomas continued.
"Michael, I think your wife knew something about Emily's biological father. And I believe Richard Hale has been helping her keep that information hidden.""
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
"STOP TALKING!""
Dad turned toward her.
"Who is Emily's father?""
She backed away.
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, she looked genuinely terrified.
Then she whispered:
"Ask your brother.""
Dad went completely still.
"My brother?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Ask Daniel what happened the night your wife gave birth.""
Dad's face drained of color.
I had heard stories about Uncle Daniel all my life.
He had died in a car accident before I was old enough to remember him.
But Vanessa was staring at my father as though she had just opened a grave.
May you like
And then she delivered the final blow.
"Your brother didn't die in that accident, Michael. At least, not the way you've always been told.""
