Chapter 6: The Man at the Door
I stood motionless as the man outside raised his hand and knocked again.
Daniel.
My biological father.
The man I'd been told was dead before I could even understand what death meant.
Dad stared through the glass.
His face had become unreadable.
"Daniel?""
The man nodded.
Then he held up an old photograph.
It showed two boys standing beside a red bicycle.
Dad's expression crumbled.
He unlocked the door.
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Then the stranger stepped inside.
"Hello, Michael.""
Dad stared at him.
"You're alive.""
Daniel gave a sad smile.
"Apparently.""
Dad suddenly grabbed his brother's shoulders.
"Where the hell have you been?""
Daniel didn't resist.
"Trying to stay alive.""
Dad released him and stepped backward.
"You let me bury you!""
"I didn't have a choice.""
"You let me mourn you for twenty-five years!""
Daniel's eyes lowered.
"I know.""
Dad's voice broke.
"Do you have any idea what that did to me?""
Daniel looked toward me.
"I know exactly what it did to you.""
Then his eyes met mine.
I couldn't move.
He looked older than the man in the photograph. His hair was almost completely gray, and a long scar ran from his eyebrow toward his temple.
But his eyes were familiar.
Not because I'd seen them before.
Because they were the same color as mine.
"Emily," he whispered.
I swallowed.
"You're Daniel?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"My uncle?""
His expression tightened.
"That is what you've always been told.""
I took a step backward.
"Are you my father?""
He looked at Dad.
Then back at me.
"Yes.""
The word was quiet.
But it changed everything.
I felt my chest tighten.
"Why?""
Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I loved your mother. And because I was there when she discovered she was pregnant.""
I shook my head.
"Then why did you leave?""
He looked down.
"Because your grandfather threatened to have me killed.""
Dad stepped forward.
"Stop making excuses.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Michael, I know you hate me.""
"Hate you? I thought you were dead!""
"I know.""
"You could have contacted me!""
"I tried.""
"When?""
"Several times.""
Dad laughed bitterly.
"Nobody contacted me.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"She made sure of that.""
Vanessa immediately stood.
"Don't you dare blame me.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"You took money from my daughter's trust.""
"I did what Arthur asked me to do!""
"Arthur is dead.""
"And you were supposed to stay dead!""
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at her.
Then he looked at me.
"She's right. I was supposed to stay dead.""
I approached him.
"Tell me what happened.""
Daniel took a breath.
"Twenty-five years ago, I discovered that our father had been stealing from the company. Millions of dollars were disappearing through shell corporations. When I confronted him, he threatened to destroy me.""
Dad shook his head.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I did. You didn't believe me.""
Dad's mouth tightened.
Daniel continued.
"Then Claire found the financial records. She was pregnant, and she knew our father would never allow the baby to inherit anything connected to the company.""
I looked at him.
"So she married Michael?""
Daniel nodded.
"She loved him. And she knew he would protect you.""
Dad looked away.
Daniel continued.
"Our father arranged the accident. My car was found burning on a country road. I survived because I had gotten out before it crashed.""
I stared at the scar on his forehead.
"Who helped you?""
"A truck driver. He found me unconscious near the road.""
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Because the first police officer who questioned me was already working for my father.""
Dad rubbed his face.
"Jesus.""
Daniel looked toward the open safe.
"Did you find the envelope?""
Dad nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then you know about the trust.""
"I know Vanessa stole from it.""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"She did more than that.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.
"That's enough.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Sit down.""
"Don't tell me what to do!""
"You've been lying to this family for twenty-five years. The least you can do is sit down while the truth comes out.""
She glared at him.
Then she sat.
Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a thick folder.
"I brought copies of the original financial records. Everything your father hid.""
He placed them on the table.
Dad opened the folder.
Inside were bank statements, company ledgers, photographs, and several signed agreements.
Then he found a document bearing his own name.
He frowned.
"What's this?""
Daniel leaned closer.
"Your father's original succession agreement.""
Dad read it.
His eyes widened.
"This says I was never supposed to inherit the controlling shares.""
"Correct.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed you were too loyal to Claire.""
Dad stared at the page.
"And Emily?""
Daniel nodded.
"He wanted to use her inheritance as leverage. He believed that if you ever discovered the truth, you'd choose the company over your daughter.""
Dad slammed the folder shut.
"That's insane.""
"Your father was afraid of losing control.""
I looked at the documents.
"Then why did Vanessa receive the dividends?""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Because she signed an agreement promising to keep the trust under her control until Emily turned twenty-five.""
I stared.
"That was six months ago.""
"Exactly.""
Daniel looked at me.
"She was supposed to transfer everything to you on your birthday.""
I remembered Vanessa's behavior.
The arguments.
The sudden accusations.
The day she threw me out.
"She knew the deadline was coming.""
Daniel nodded.
"And she had already transferred most of the money she could access.""
Dad looked at Vanessa.
"How much did you take?""
She covered her face.
"Michael, please.""
"HOW MUCH?""
"Nearly nine hundred thousand dollars.""
Dad looked sick.
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not the worst part.""
He opened another folder.
Inside was a photocopy of a medical report.
My mother's name appeared at the top.
I moved closer.
"What is that?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your mother's final medical report.""
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
A medication had been administered during her surgery.
The report stated that the dosage had been changed shortly before the procedure.
"Who changed it?"" I asked.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"Not me.""
"Who?"" Dad demanded.
Daniel placed another paper on the table.
A signed authorization form.
The signature belonged to Vanessa.
She immediately stood.
"That's not real!""
Daniel pointed to the date.
"You signed it two days before Claire died.""
"I was following instructions!""
"Whose instructions?""
She looked at Dad.
Then at me.
Her lips trembled.
"Arthur's.""
Dad looked devastated.
"You helped my father kill my wife?""
"I didn't know the medication would hurt her!""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Then why did you receive fifty thousand dollars three days later?""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I didn't know!""
I felt the room spinning.
My mother hadn't simply died.
Someone had changed her treatment.
Someone had paid Vanessa.
And the woman who had spent six months calling me worthless had known the truth all along.
Dad picked up his phone.
"I'm calling the police.""
This time, Vanessa didn't argue.
She just looked at me.
"You don't understand," she whispered.
I stared at her.
"What don't I understand?""
She slowly shook her head.
"Your grandfather didn't order your mother's death because of the company.""
Daniel's face changed.
"Vanessa, stop.""
But she continued.
"He ordered it because Claire had discovered who Emily really was.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.
"Your mother discovered that Daniel wasn't the only person involved in your birth.""
Daniel went completely still.
Dad turned toward him.
"What is she talking about?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Vanessa began crying harder.
Then she revealed the secret that made both men freeze.
"Emily was born with a twin brother.""
I stared at her.
"A twin?""
She nodded.
"Your mother gave birth to two babies. But only one was brought home.""
Daniel's face had gone deathly pale.
Dad whispered:
"Where is the other child?""
Vanessa looked at the old photograph on the table.
Then she said:
"That's what your mother was trying to tell you in the letter. Your brother is still alive.""
And just as the doorbell rang again, Daniel received a text message.
He read it once.
May you like
Then he looked at me with terrified eyes.
*THE BOY KNOWS WHO YOU ARE. AND HE'S COMING FOR HIS SHARE.*
