Chapter 8: The Daughter Hidden in the Shadows

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air like a sentence nobody wanted to finish.

Your daughter was born alive.

I looked at Mark.

My husband.

The man who had held my hand through pregnancy.

The man who stood beside me when the doctor told us Leo was healthy.

The man who cried when he first held our son.

And I wondered how many times he had looked into my eyes while carrying this secret.

“How?””

My voice barely worked.

“How could that be true?””

Mark looked destroyed.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“Don’t say my name.””

The tears finally came.

Not the kind that came from sadness.

The kind that came from your mind trying to reject something too painful to understand.

“I was there.””

My voice shook.

“I remember the hospital.””

Mark closed his eyes.

“I remember waking up.””

I looked at him.

“I remember you telling me the baby was gone.””

The room became silent.

Emily covered her mouth.

Arthur looked at the floor.

Because they all knew.

They knew.

I grabbed the edge of the table to steady myself.

“You told me our daughter died.””

Mark whispered:

“I thought she did.””

The anger that rose inside me was almost unbearable.

“You thought?””

I turned toward him.

“You thought?””

My voice echoed through the mansion.

“You let me bury my own child in my heart because you thought?””

Mark looked like he wanted to come closer.

But he didn’t.

Maybe for the first time, he understood that he had no right.

“I was told she didn’t survive.””

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Rachel.””

Mark looked away.

That was enough.

My sister.

The person who sat beside me while I cried.

The person who told me, “Some things happen for a reason.””

The person who knew my child was alive.

I felt sick.

“Where is she?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Arthur.

“You said Mark hid where she went.””

Arthur slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

His face showed regret.

“I don’t know everything.””

I stared at him.

“But you know something.””

Arthur took a deep breath.

“After Mark discovered the truth about Leo and Emily, he was desperate.””

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“Dad.””

“No.””

Arthur looked at him.

“You don’t get to interrupt anymore.””

Mark looked away.

Arthur continued.

“He was afraid of losing you.””

His eyes met mine.

“He was afraid Sarah would discover everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“He was right.””

Arthur nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“After the hospital,” Arthur continued, “Mark came to me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he was panicking.””

Arthur looked at his son.

“He said he needed help.””

Mark whispered:

“I was scared.””

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“You were selfish.””

A painful silence.

“He told me the baby had been taken.””

My breath caught.

“Taken by who?””

Arthur shook his head.

“That’s what we never knew.””

I looked at Mark.

“But you know now.””

Mark didn’t answer.

“Don’t lie.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I found out years later.””

“When?””

“After Leo was born.””

My heart broke all over again.

“So you knew?””

He nodded.

“I found documents.””

“What documents?””

Mark looked toward the floor.

“Adoption records.””

Emily’s face changed.

“No…”

Mark looked at her.

“I didn’t know where she was.””

I stepped closer.

“Who had her?””

His silence returned.

The silence that had ruined my life.

“Mark.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Rachel.””

The room went still.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, my sister would never…”

But even saying it sounded impossible now.

Because Rachel had already done the impossible.

She had helped him hide Arthur.

She had hidden Emily.

Why would my daughter be different?

Emily looked at Mark.

“Why would Rachel take Sarah’s baby?””

Mark’s face tightened.

“I don’t know.””

Arthur suddenly looked up.

“Yes, you do.””

Everyone turned.

Arthur stared at Mark.

“You know exactly why.””

Mark froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Arthur’s voice became quieter.

“The hospital.””

A pause.

“The night Sarah gave birth.””

My heart started racing.

“What about it?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Sarah, did you notice anything strange?””

I searched my memories.

The hospital room.

The nurses.

The doctor.

The exhaustion.

The pain.

And then…

Something.

A tiny detail.

Something I had ignored for years.

“I remember…”

My voice faded.

“What?””

I looked at Mark.

“You weren’t with me when the doctor came back.””

Mark went still.

“You said you had to sign paperwork.””

Nobody spoke.

Arthur nodded.

“What paperwork?””

I looked at Mark.

“What did you sign?””

He looked terrified.

“Sarah…”

“What did you sign?””

His eyes filled.

“I signed custody papers.””

The room exploded.

Emily gasped.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Officer Daniels immediately stepped forward.

“Custody papers?””

Mark looked at him.

“I thought it was temporary.””

“You signed away your daughter?””

“I was told she was dead!””

“But you signed.””

Mark couldn’t argue.

Because that was the truth.

I felt numb.

A million questions were racing through my head.

“If you signed papers…”

I looked at Arthur.

“Who has her?””

Nobody answered.

Then Officer Daniels’ phone rang again.

This time, everyone noticed his expression immediately.

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I already knew.

Something else had happened.

“What?””

The officer lowered the phone.

“The hospital security footage was reviewed.””

My heart pounded.

“And?””

He hesitated.

“The person who took your daughter was identified.””

I couldn’t move.

“Who?””

The officer looked at Mark.

Then at me.

“It was not Rachel.””

Mark’s face changed.

Everyone froze.

“Then who?””

The officer took a breath.

“The person on the footage was someone who had access to the hospital records.””

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

The officer looked at Arthur.

“I’m sorry.””

A pause.

“But the person who removed your daughter from the hospital…”

He looked at the photograph on the table.

The photograph of Mark’s secrets.

“The person who started this entire chain of lies…”

Nobody breathed.

Then he said the name.

“Was Arthur Carter.””

The room shattered.

I looked at Arthur.

The old man who had been trapped.

The man who claimed to be protecting the truth.

The man who had looked at Leo with love.

“No.””

Arthur’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer frowned.

“You’re saying you weren’t there?””

Arthur looked confused.

“I was locked away.””

Mark suddenly laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

Only disbelief.

“Dad…”

Everyone turned toward him.

Mark stared at Arthur.

“You really thought nobody would find out?””

Arthur’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

Mark stepped closer.

“You told everyone I was the monster.””

His voice became cold.

“But you were hiding something too.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Is it true?””

The old man opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

Because for the first time that night…

Arthur Carter looked afraid.

Not of Mark.

Not of the police.

Of me.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A young woman stood there.

She looked around twenty years old.

Her eyes immediately found mine.

I had never seen her before.

But something inside me knew.

She was holding an old photograph.

A photograph of a baby.

A baby wearing the same necklace I had given my daughter before she disappeared.

The young woman’s voice trembled.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I couldn’t speak.

She stepped forward.

“I think you’ve been looking for me.””

My heart stopped.

Because she looked at Arthur.

Then at Mark.

And finally at me.

“My name is Lily.””

May you like

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And I’m the daughter everyone lied about.””
