Chapter 5: The Sister Who Knew Everything

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

The woman standing beside Mark wasn’t a stranger.

She wasn’t someone from his past.

She wasn’t someone I could convince myself was part of a life before me.

It was Rachel.

My sister.

My own sister.

The person who had held my hand when I gave birth to Leo.

The person who cried with me when I thought motherhood was too overwhelming.

The person who told me, “You’re lucky, Sarah. Mark is one of the good ones.””

My stomach twisted.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

Arthur watched my face carefully.

“You know her.””

I couldn’t answer.

Mark looked at the photograph.

And for the first time that night, his fear wasn’t about himself.

It was about what came next.

“Sarah…”

I looked up.

“Don’t.””

His mouth closed.

“Don’t say my name like you still have the right.””

The pain on his face almost fooled me.

Almost.

But then I remembered the hidden room.

The locked door.

The twelve years.

The lies.

I held up the photograph.

“How long?””

Mark looked away.

“How long did my sister know?””

Silence.

I laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“Of course.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone knew.””

Leo stood near the stairs, watching all of us.

Too young to understand the details.

Old enough to understand something terrible had happened.

I lowered my voice.

“Officer Daniels, can you take Leo somewhere else?””

The officer nodded.

A female officer approached him gently.

“Come with me, okay?””

Leo didn’t move.

He looked at Mark.

“Dad?””

Mark looked up.

The word still affected him.

Even after everything.

“I’m here.””

Leo swallowed.

“Are you still my dad?””

The question destroyed Mark more than any accusation could.

He stood there, unable to answer immediately.

Finally, he whispered:

“I always will be.””

Leo looked at Emily.

Then at me.

Then he walked away.

Only when he disappeared into the next room did I turn back.

“Explain.””

Mark rubbed his hands over his face.

“I can explain Rachel.””

“No.””

My voice was sharp.

“Not Rachel first.””

I pointed at Arthur.

“Explain him.””

Then Emily.

“Explain her.””

Then the photograph.

“And explain why my sister was standing beside you when your father disappeared.””

Mark looked exhausted.

“I never wanted any of this.””

Arthur gave a cold smile.

“That’s what you always say.””

Mark turned toward him.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“No?””

His voice was quiet.

“Then tell Sarah.””

Mark didn’t move.

“Tell her about the night you came to me.””

The room became silent.

Mark’s face changed.

Arthur continued.

“You were twenty-six.””

A pause.

“You were terrified.””

Another pause.

“You told me you had made a mistake.””

I looked at Mark.

“What mistake?””

He looked at the floor.

Arthur answered.

“Mark discovered Emily was pregnant.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“And he panicked.””

Mark immediately looked at her.

“That’s not what happened.””

“No?””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“You told me you weren’t ready.””

She looked at me.

“You told me he begged you to keep the baby secret.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Arthur spoke.

“Because Mark was engaged.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

I looked at Mark.

“You were engaged?””

He nodded slowly.

“To someone else.””

I stared at him.

“Before me?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Mark looked ashamed.

“I thought it didn’t matter anymore.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“It mattered.””

She touched her chest.

“It mattered when I raised our son alone.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Why did you get involved?””

Arthur’s expression changed.

Regret.

“I found out what Mark had done.””

He looked at his son.

“And I told him he needed to take responsibility.””

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“You threatened me.””

“I gave you a choice.””

“You said you would tell everyone.””

“Because you refused to.””

Mark looked away.

Arthur continued.

“You weren’t afraid of losing your reputation.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“You were afraid Sarah would never look at you the same way.””

That sentence hit because it was true.

Mark had protected his image.

Not his family.

“What happened next?”” I asked.

Arthur became quiet.

“Mark came to my house.””

The old man’s eyes darkened.

“He told me I was ruining his life.””

Mark whispered:

“Dad…”

“No.””

Arthur’s voice hardened.

“For once, you will hear the truth.””

The room went still.

“He pushed me.””

Emily covered her mouth.

I froze.

“He didn’t mean to hurt me,” Arthur continued.

“But when I hit the floor, he made a choice.””

Mark’s face went pale.

“He left me there.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I looked at Mark.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

Arthur nodded.

“He came back later.””

“When?””

“The next day.””

My breath caught.

“And that’s when he built the room.””

Mark finally exploded.

“Because you were going to destroy everything!””

Everyone jumped.

The anger that came out of him was raw.

“You were going to tell Sarah!””

Arthur stared at him.

“Yes.””

“You were going to take Leo from me!””

“No.””

Mark shook his head.

“You don’t understand!””

“I understand perfectly.””

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to keep my family together.””

I stepped forward.

“You don’t keep a family together by trapping people.””

He looked at me.

“I loved you.””

I stared at him.

“You loved the version of yourself you created.””

That sentence silenced him.

Because he knew.

Deep down, he knew.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Leo stood there.

I immediately moved toward him.

“Leo, sweetheart…”

But he looked past me.

At Mark.

“How long did you know?””

Mark froze.

Leo’s voice shook.

“How long did you know she was my mom?””

Emily started crying.

Mark looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“Leo…”

“Answer me.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried more pain than anger.

Mark slowly sat down.

“Since the day you were born.””

Leo wiped his face.

“So every birthday?””

Mark looked at him.

“Leo…”

“Every time you said I was your son?””

Mark broke.

“Yes.””

Leo nodded slowly.

“Was it a lie?””

“No.””

Mark stood.

“No, never.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Because there was no answer.

Not one that could fix it.

Mark opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Leo looked at Emily.

Then back at Mark.

“I need to be alone.””

He walked away.

This time, nobody stopped him.

Because everyone knew he needed space from the truth.

I watched him disappear.

Then I turned back to the photograph.

Rachel.

My sister.

The final person I thought I could trust.

“I want to talk to her.””

Mark’s eyes widened.

“Sarah.””

“I want to hear it from her.””

Arthur nodded.

“She has been hiding for a long time.””

I looked at him.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emily slowly pulled another document from the folder.

“I know where she is.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Emily hesitated.

“Because she contacted me two days ago.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Emily looked at Mark.

“Because she was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Emily handed me the document.

It was a message.

A message sent from Rachel.

The first line made my hands go cold.

*Emily, I can’t protect Mark anymore. He’s done something worse than hiding Arthur.*

I kept reading.

May you like

And the final sentence made everyone in the room silent.

*Sarah is in danger, and she has no idea what her husband did after Leo was born.*
