Chapter 6: The Secret Rachel Tried to Bury
The message on the screen felt colder than the rain outside.
Sarah is in danger.
Four words.
Four words that changed the entire meaning of the night.
Until that moment, I thought I was uncovering the damage Mark had already done.
The hidden room.
The stolen years.
The lies about Leo.
But this was different.
This wasn’t about the past.
This was about now.
I looked up at Emily.
“What did she mean?””
Emily lowered her eyes.
“I don’t know everything.””
“That’s not good enough.””
My voice surprised even me.
I wasn’t crying anymore.
I wasn’t shaking.
Something inside me had gone quiet.
The kind of quiet that comes when fear turns into something stronger.
“Where is Rachel?””
Emily hesitated.
“She told me she would meet me tonight.””
“Where?””
“She didn’t say.””
I looked at Mark.
He was standing completely still.
Too still.
And I knew him well enough to recognize it.
When Mark was afraid, he became calm.
Careful.
Controlled.
“Mark.””
He looked at me.
“Did you know Rachel contacted Emily?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Arthur noticed too.
“You’re lying.””
Mark’s eyes moved toward him.
“You don’t know that.””
Arthur gave a tired smile.
“I know you.””
Those words seemed to hit Mark harder than any accusation.
I stepped closer.
“What did you do after Leo was born?””
Mark looked at me.
“I told you.””
“You told me nothing.””
His expression changed.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Stop calling them mistakes.””
The room was silent.
“Mistakes happen by accident.””
I pointed toward the hidden doorway.
“Walls don’t build themselves.””
I looked at Emily.
“People don’t disappear by accident.””
Then I looked back at him.
“And secrets don’t survive for twelve years without someone protecting them.””
Mark looked away.
That was when I knew.
There was more.
Officer Daniels stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, I need you to answer some questions.””
Mark ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Sarah, there are things you don’t understand.””
“Then explain them.””
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me everything.
“After Leo was born,” he finally said, “things became complicated.””
Emily laughed quietly.
“Complicated?””
Mark looked at her.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
His voice rose.
“You left.””
Emily froze.
The accusation hung there.
Then she whispered:
“Because you told me to.””
Mark looked away.
I watched them.
Two people who had once loved each other.
Two people who had destroyed each other.
And somehow, Leo had been caught in the middle.
“What happened after Leo was born?”” I asked again.
Mark didn’t answer.
Arthur did.
“Rachel found out.””
I turned.
“About what?””
Arthur looked at Mark.
“About the money.””
The room changed.
Money.
A new piece of the puzzle.
“What money?””
Mark closed his eyes.
Arthur continued.
“Mark was not only hiding Leo’s identity.””
He looked at me.
“He was hiding what he did with my company.””
I frowned.
“What company?””
Mark’s expression tightened.
Arthur sighed.
“When Mark was young, I built a business from nothing.””
I nodded slowly.
I knew that.
Everyone knew Arthur had been successful.
But after his disappearance, Mark inherited everything.
At least, that was the story.
Arthur continued.
“When I disappeared, Mark took control.””
My stomach tightened.
“Because everyone thought you were dead?””
Arthur nodded.
“He used my disappearance to transfer ownership.””
Mark immediately said:
“That’s not true.””
Arthur looked at him.
“You told everyone I abandoned my family.””
Mark’s voice became defensive.
“I was protecting what you built.””
“No.””
Arthur’s voice became colder.
“You were protecting what you stole.””
Officer Daniels looked up.
“Are you saying there was financial fraud?””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Mark.
“You stole from your own father?””
“No.””
His answer came instantly.
Then slower:
“I saved the company.””
Arthur shook his head.
“That’s what you told yourself.””
I looked at the documents Emily had brought.
“Does Rachel know about this?””
Emily nodded.
“That’s why she contacted me.””
I turned toward her.
“Explain.””
Emily took a deep breath.
“A few months ago, Rachel found documents in Mark’s office.””
Mark’s face changed.
“What documents?””
Emily looked at him.
“You know exactly what documents.””
For the first time, Mark looked genuinely frightened.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
I noticed.
And so did everyone else.
Officer Daniels stepped closer.
“What documents?””
Emily looked at me.
“Proof that Mark had been moving money for years.””
My hands went cold.
“From where?””
Arthur answered.
“My accounts.””
Silence.
Mark looked at Arthur.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
Arthur smiled sadly.
“I spent twelve years in a room because I knew exactly what you were doing.””
Mark’s breathing became heavier.
I watched him.
This was the first time I saw the man behind the mask.
Not the husband.
Not the father.
The person underneath.
Someone terrified of losing control.
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked around.
It was Mark’s phone.
He reached for it.
I noticed his hand shaking.
Officer Daniels stopped him.
“Don’t.””
Mark looked at him.
“It could be important.””
The officer stared.
“Then answer it on speaker.””
Mark hesitated.
Then pressed the button.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“Mark?””
Everyone froze.
Rachel.
My heart jumped.
“Rachel,” I whispered.
There was a pause.
Then her voice became desperate.
“Sarah?””
I stepped closer.
“Yes.””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“Oh my God.””
She sounded like she was crying.
“Sarah, listen to me.””
Mark looked at the phone.
“Rachel, where are you?””
She ignored him.
“Sarah, you need to leave the house.””
My blood ran cold.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Mark knows I found the original file.””
Mark’s face changed.
“What file?””
Rachel’s voice broke.
“The file about what happened to Leo’s real father.””
Everyone looked at Mark.
Emily went pale.
Arthur slowly stood.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel continued.
“He didn’t tell you the whole truth.””
I felt my chest tighten.
There was more?
How could there be more?
Mark stepped toward the phone.
“Rachel, stop talking.””
She suddenly sounded terrified.
“No.””
Then quieter:
“I should have told Sarah years ago.””
The call crackled.
“Rachel?””
A sound came from her end.
Like a door opening.
Someone entering.
Then Rachel whispered:
“He’s here.””
My entire body froze.
“Who?””
No answer.
Only breathing.
Then a man’s voice came through the phone.
A voice none of us expected.
“Rachel.””
The line went silent.
Mark stared at the phone.
Because he recognized the voice.
Arthur recognized it too.
His face drained of color.
“No…”
I looked between them.
“Who is it?””
Arthur whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The voice came back one final time before the call ended.
“Sarah…”
A pause.
“You need to know what your husband did to your first child.””
The phone went dead.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Until Leo’s voice came from behind me.
“My first child?””
I turned.
My son was standing there.
He had heard everything.
And on his face was the same fear I felt.
Because now we all understood.
The secrets around Mark were deeper than any of us imagined.

And somewhere in the darkness outside that mansion…
Someone from Mark’s past had just returned.
