Chapter 9: The Truth Daniel Cross Buried For Eight Years
Nobody moved.
Not even Daniel.
He stood in the doorway of the abandoned race facility, older than I remembered, thinner than the photographs, but unmistakably alive.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man everyone blamed.
The man who had been hiding in the shadows while my family destroyed itself trying to understand the past.
And now he was standing in front of us saying the one thing I never expected to hear.
*“He died because of me.””*
Ryan immediately stepped forward.
“You have five seconds to explain that.””
Daniel didn’t flinch.
“I deserve that.””
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“You let everyone believe you were dead.””
“Yes.””
“You let my sister almost die.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I never wanted Emma hurt.””
Ryan’s voice became colder.
“But she was.””
The room felt smaller.
Detective Mason raised his weapon slightly.
“Everyone stays where they are.””
Daniel slowly lifted his hands.
“I’m not here to fight.””
“Then start talking,” the detective said.
Daniel looked at me.
Not Ryan.
Me.
“I owe you the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“You owe me a lot more than that.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
For years, I imagined meeting Daniel Cross.
I imagined anger.
I imagined revenge.
I imagined asking him why he destroyed my father’s legacy.
But standing there, looking at him, I realized something.
He wasn’t the monster I expected.
He looked like a man who had already been punished.
The question was why.
“Tell us what happened,” I said.
Daniel looked at the old engine beside him.
“Your father found out Victor was stealing technology.””
Ryan interrupted.
“We know that.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You know part of it.””
He walked closer.
“Victor wasn’t stealing information to help another racing team.””
He looked at the broken walls around us.
“He was building something bigger.””
“What?””
“A system.””
Daniel pointed toward the engine.
“A way to control races completely.””
Nobody spoke.
“He wanted to create failures that looked like accidents.””
My stomach tightened.
“The brakes.””
Daniel nodded.
“The crashes. The mechanical problems. The injuries.””
Ryan’s hands tightened.
“He killed drivers.””
“Yes.””
“And Dad found out.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father was going to expose him.””
I already knew that part.
But then Daniel said something I didn’t.
“He asked me for help.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“You were working with my father?””
Daniel nodded.
“We were going to bring Victor down together.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Then why did Dad die?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because Victor found out.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What happened?””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“The night your father died, we planned to meet with evidence.””
He looked at Ryan.
“Your brother was supposed to bring the final documents.””
Ryan froze.
“Me?””
Daniel nodded.
“You didn’t know what you were carrying.””
Ryan stared.
“What documents?””
“The evidence against Victor.””
Daniel continued.
“But Victor manipulated you.””
Ryan looked down.
“I gave him the location.””
“Yes.””
The guilt returned to Ryan’s face.
But Daniel continued.
“You gave him the location because you thought you were helping your father.””
I looked at Ryan.
“He thought Victor was protecting Dad.””
Daniel nodded.
“Victor lied.””
The room became silent.
“Then what happened when you arrived?””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“I followed Victor.””
“To the track?””
“Yes.””
He looked at the floor.
“When I got there, your father was already arguing with him.””
“About what?””
“About Elena.””
Ryan looked up.
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because Elena was the one who gave Victor access to your father’s work.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“But she regretted it.””
Daniel nodded.
“She realized too late what Victor planned.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did you say Dad died because of you?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Because that was the question he had been avoiding.
“I made a mistake.””
Nobody spoke.
“What mistake?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
A pause.
Then:
“I told someone about the meeting.””
Ryan’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the doorway.
Toward the darkness outside.
“I thought it was someone on our side.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
“My evidence.””
Detective Mason stepped forward.
“Give that to me.””
Daniel handed it over.
The detective opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
Then he stopped.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He looked at me.
“This is impossible.””
Ryan moved closer.
“What?””
Detective Mason held up one photograph.
A photograph from eight years ago.
The night my father died.
Three people stood beside the track.
My father.
Victor.
And Daniel.
But behind them…
Another person.
Someone watching.
Someone holding a phone.
Someone who had recorded everything.
The detective turned the photo around.
Written on the back was a date.
And one name.
*Emma Carter.*
My blood froze.
“Why is my name on that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Victor knew you would become a racer.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“He knew your father’s biggest weakness.””
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“You.””
I felt sick.
“My father’s weakness was me?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“You were his reason.””
The words hurt.
“Then why put my name there?””
Daniel looked at Ryan.
“Because Victor believed Ryan would protect you.””
Ryan frowned.
“What?””
“He knew your brother loved you more than anything.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“Victor’s plan wasn’t only to kill your father.””
“What was it?””
“To control the entire family.””
I looked at the documents.
The lies.
The secrets.
The missing years.
Everything was connected.
Then Chloe suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She was staring at one of the papers.
“This signature.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
She picked it up.
“This isn’t Victor’s.””
Detective Mason frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Chloe pointed.
“Victor signed many documents differently. This signature was copied.””
Daniel took the paper.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“This document wasn’t created by Victor.””
“Then who created it?””
Daniel slowly looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Before anyone could respond, the lights went out.
The entire facility went dark.
Someone screamed.
A gunshot echoed.
Everyone dropped.
I felt Ryan grab my arm.
“Stay down!””
Another shot.
Then footsteps.
Fast.
Running.
Detective Mason turned on his flashlight.
“Everyone okay?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Where’s the evidence?””
The detective looked at the table.
The documents were gone.
Someone had entered during the blackout.
Someone had taken the only proof we had.
Ryan stood slowly.
“He was here.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Ryan stared toward the open door.
“The person who has been ahead of us the entire time.””
A figure appeared briefly outside.
Running into the darkness.
Daniel chased after him.
Ryan followed.
I followed too.
Because I was done being protected.
We reached the parking lot.
The person stopped beside a car.
For one second, the moonlight revealed their face.
And my world collapsed.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it every day.
Trusted it.
Worked beside it.
The person holding the stolen evidence turned around.
It was Marcus.
But he wasn’t alone.
Someone sat in the driver’s seat.
Someone older.
Someone smiling.
The window lowered.
And I heard a voice I never thought I would hear again.
A voice from my childhood.
A voice from my happiest memories.
“Emma.””
I froze.
The person smiled.
“Your father never told you the truth about me.””
My hands went cold.
Because sitting beside Marcus was the last person I expected.
My father’s closest friend.
The person who had supposedly been dead for years.
Victor Hale.
May you like
And he said:
“Because he knew you would never forgive him.””
