Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew The Truth

I spent the next hour staring at the motel room door.

Waiting.

For someone to knock.

For someone to break in.

For someone to explain why my entire life had become a lie.

But nothing happened.

The silence was almost worse.

Because silence gave my mind room to remember.

My mother’s voice.

Her warning.

Her words.

*You cannot trust Ryan.*

I looked across the room at my brother.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor.

For the first time in my life, Ryan looked defeated.

Not tired.

Not hurt.

Defeated.

“You knew she was alive.””

His head lifted.

“Emma…”

“Don’t.””

My voice was quieter than I expected.

“Just answer.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

More than I wanted it to.

Chloe stood near the window, watching both of us.

“You knew?””

Ryan nodded.

“I found out two years ago.””

My chest tightened.

“Two years?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

He swallowed.

“No.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Of course.””

I walked toward the small table and grabbed the notebook.

“Everyone knows something except me.””

“Emma.””

“My father died. My brother disappeared. My mother abandoned me.

My rival attacks me before a race. A dead man comes back from the grave.””

I looked at him.

“And somehow I’m the last person to know what’s happening.””

Ryan stood.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s what everyone says when they’re hiding something.””

The words hit him.

Good.

Maybe he needed to hear them.

Because I needed him to understand.

Protecting someone did not mean trapping them in a lie.

Before Ryan could respond, Chloe stepped forward.

“He’s telling the truth.””

I looked at her.

“Why are you defending him?””

“Because I did the same thing.””

I froze.

“What?””

Chloe looked down.

“I knew Ryan was investigating.””

Ryan turned toward her.

“How?””

“Because Daniel told me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You and Daniel were working together.””

Chloe nodded.

“At first.””

The answer shocked me.

“At first?””

She sat down.

“Two years ago, I found documents from my father’s old company.””

“Your father?””

Chloe nodded.

“My father worked with Victor Hale too.””

The room became silent.

Another connection.

Another secret.

“He was part of it?””

“I don’t know.””

Chloe looked frustrated.

“That’s the problem. Nobody knows everything.””

She pointed at the notebook.

“Victor built an entire network. He used people against each other. He made sure nobody had the full picture.””

Ryan nodded.

“That’s why Dad kept records.””

I looked at the pages.

“So my father knew.””

“Yes.””

“And he trusted you to uncover it?””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“No.””

That surprised me.

“Then why did he leave you the message?””

Ryan looked at the photograph.

The one with the words written on the back.

You promised me you would protect her.

“He wasn’t telling me to investigate.””

“Then what?””

“He was telling me to protect you from the investigation.””

I felt my anger soften slightly.

But only slightly.

“Why?””

“Because he knew if Victor found out you were involved, he would use you.””

I stared at him.

“Like he did today?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

The race.

The brakes.

The attack.

Everything had been designed around me.

Not because I was the target.

Because I was the bait.

The next morning, we met with the police.

They didn’t believe everything.

I understood why.

It sounded impossible.

A dead engineer.

A missing mother.

A conspiracy inside professional racing.

But they believed enough to investigate.

Detective Mason placed several photos on the table.

“We found this near the old garage.””

One photo showed tire tracks.

Another showed a broken piece of metal.

“What is that?”” I asked.

“Part of a tracking device.””

Ryan looked up.

“Tracking device?””

The detective nodded.

“Someone placed it under your car before the race.””

My stomach dropped.

“So they knew where I would be.””

“Yes.””

Chloe crossed her arms.

“Or they wanted us to think that.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at the device.

“This isn’t just a tracker.””

Detective Mason raised an eyebrow.

“How do you know?””

“Because Victor used them.””

The room went quiet.

“Used them for what?”” I asked.

Chloe looked uncomfortable.

“To control races.””

I frowned.

“How?””

She explained.

“The devices weren’t just for location. They collected information.””

“What kind?””

“Engine data. Brake pressure. Driver reactions.””

My blood ran cold.

“Someone was watching me drive?””

“Yes.””

Ryan looked furious.

“Why?””

Chloe answered quietly.

“Because they were studying you.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“Studying me for what?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Mason’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A pause.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He stood immediately.

“We’re coming.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” Ryan asked.

The detective looked at me.

“We found your mother.””

My heart stopped.

The abandoned warehouse was three miles outside the city.

Police vehicles surrounded it.

I could barely breathe as we walked inside.

I didn’t know what I expected.

A confrontation.

An explanation.

An apology.

But when I saw my mother sitting on a chair, I forgot every angry thought I had prepared.

She looked older.

Smaller.

Not like the woman from my memories.

The woman who used to sing while making breakfast.

The woman who held my hand when I was afraid.

She looked like someone who had spent years running.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

That one word broke something inside me.

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted both.

Instead, I stood still.

“Why?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

“Why did you leave?””

My mother looked down.

“Because staying would have gotten you killed.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

“You disappeared.””

“I know.””

“You let me think you didn’t want me.””

Her face collapsed.

“I know.””

The pain in her voice almost made me cry.

Almost.

Then Ryan stepped forward.

“Who were you hiding from?””

My mother looked at him.

And her expression changed.

Fear.

Anger.

Betrayal.

“You.””

The word shocked all of us.

Ryan froze.

“What?””

She stood slowly.

“I wasn’t hiding from Victor.””

She looked at my brother.

“I was hiding from the person who helped him.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

“Mom…”

She shook her head.

“Don’t call me that.””

The room became cold.

“You made a promise to your father.””

Ryan looked down.

“I tried.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You failed.””

I stepped between them.

“Stop.””

I looked at my mother.

“What happened that night?””

She stared at me.

Then at Ryan.

Then she whispered:

“Your father didn’t die because Victor betrayed him.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because someone he trusted more than anyone else gave Victor the information.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

Like he already knew.

I turned toward him.

“You know.””

He didn’t respond.

“Ryan.””

His silence was an answer.

My mother whispered:

“Your brother was the one who told Victor where your father would be.””

The room disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the police.

Not the wind.

Not my own breathing.

Only those words.

My brother.

The person who raised me.

The person who saved me.

The person who searched for the truth.

My brother had helped the man who killed our father.

I looked at Ryan.

His eyes were full of pain.

But he didn’t deny it.

And that hurt more than anything.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

Ryan looked at me.

His voice barely came out.

“I was there.””

My heart shattered.

“What?””

He took a step forward.

“I was there because I made the mistake that started everything.””

The detective moved closer.

Chloe covered her mouth.

And Ryan whispered the sentence that changed everything.

“Emma…”

He looked at me.

“I didn’t kill Dad.””

May you like

A pause.

“But I helped the person who did.””
