Chapter 7: The Mistake That Destroyed Our Family
I couldn’t move.
Not because I didn’t understand Ryan’s words.
Because I understood them too well.
*I helped the person who did.*
The sentence stayed in my head, repeating over and over.
My brother.
The person who taught me how to drive.
The person who sat beside my hospital bed.
The person who saved my life on the race track.
The same person who had been carrying a secret for eight years.
I looked at him.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
My mother turned away.
Even she looked like she was afraid of hearing it again.
“Ryan,” I said.
My voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not broken.
Empty.
“Tell me.””
He nodded slowly.
“I was nineteen when Dad started investigating Victor.””
I frowned.
“Nineteen?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I know what you’re thinking. I was young. I thought I understood everything.””
He walked toward the window.
“But I didn’t.””
The warehouse was quiet.
Every person in the room listened.
“I thought Dad was making enemies for no reason.””
My chest tightened.
“You didn’t believe him?””
“No.””
Ryan looked down.
“Victor was my hero.””
That surprised me.
“He was?””
Ryan nodded.
“Dad was always busy. Racing. Building engines.
Traveling. Victor was the one who spent time with me.””
I remembered.
Victor taking Ryan to the garage.
Victor teaching him about cars.
Victor laughing with our family.
“I thought he cared about us,” Ryan said.
His voice cracked.
“Then one night, Victor came to me.””
My hands tightened.
“What did he say?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“He told me Dad was hiding something from me.””
I already hated where this was going.
“He said Dad was planning to destroy the team.””
“That’s impossible,” I whispered.
“I know that now.””
Ryan swallowed.
“But back then, I believed him.””
He continued.
“Victor said he needed information. Just a location. A schedule. Nothing dangerous.””
My mother looked at him.
“You trusted him.””
Ryan nodded.
“Yes.””
A painful silence followed.
“What information did you give him?””
Ryan looked at me.
“The location of Dad’s meeting.””
My heart dropped.
“The meeting where Dad was going to expose him.””
“Yes.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked away.
Eight years ago.
One decision.
One mistake.
One moment that changed everything.
“What happened after that?””
Ryan’s face became pale.
“I went to the track because I realized something was wrong.””
“Too late?””
He nodded.
“Too late.””
He looked at the floor.
“When I arrived, Dad’s car was already gone.””
“Gone?””
“Victor had moved it.””
My stomach tightened.
“The crash?””
Ryan nodded.
“Was staged.””
The room went silent.
Detective Mason stepped forward.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“Because when I arrived, Victor was there.””
My eyes narrowed.
“He threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
Ryan looked at me.
“With Emma.””
I froze.
“He told me if I talked, he would come after my little sister.””
The anger inside me exploded.
“So you disappeared?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Yes.””
“You left me alone.””
“I know.””
“You let me hate you.””
“I know.””
His eyes filled.
“But I thought you were safer if you hated me.””
That sentence hurt because I understood it.
And I hated that I understood it.
My mother stepped forward.
“Ryan was trying to fix what he did.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“He came to me years ago.””
My breath caught.
“You both knew?””
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
Everyone had known.
Everyone except me.
Ryan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
“I’ve had this since that night.””
He handed it to Detective Mason.
“What is it?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Proof.””
The detective opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And one handwritten note.
Detective Mason read it silently.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at Ryan.
“You kept this all these years?””
Ryan nodded.
“Because I was waiting until I could prove everything.””
I stepped closer.
“What does it prove?””
The detective looked at the papers.
“It proves Victor Hale wasn’t just involved.””
He looked up.
“He was running the entire operation.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“But that’s not all.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at me.
“The person helping Victor wasn’t just Ryan.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
My mother looked away.
“There was someone else.””
Ryan immediately shook his head.
“No.””
My mother stared at him.
“You know I’m right.””
Ryan’s face changed.
“Mom.””
“Your father trusted that person completely.””
I felt a terrible feeling in my stomach.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Chloe spoke.
“I think I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
She slowly pulled out her phone.
“I found something in Daniel’s files.””
She opened a document.
A list of names appeared.
At the bottom was a name highlighted.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
The person who had been around our family for years.
The person who knew every weakness.
The person who had access to every race.
The person nobody questioned.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
Chloe nodded.
“Your father’s mechanic.””
I felt dizzy.
Marcus.
The man who had worked on my car.
The man who screamed through the radio when my brakes failed.
The man who helped save me.
The man I trusted.
“That’s impossible,” Ryan said.
Chloe looked at him.
“Is it?””
Ryan went silent.
And I remembered something.
Something small.
Something I ignored.
Before the race, Marcus had been nervous.
He kept looking toward the garage.
He had told me my car was perfect.
He had insisted he personally checked everything.
My stomach turned.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then Detective Mason’s phone rang.
He picked it up.
“Yes?””
A pause.
Then his expression changed.
“Are you sure?””
He looked at me.
“Marcus is gone.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean gone?””
The detective stared at the floor.
“His workshop was empty.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“When?””
Chloe looked at the document again.
“There’s more.””
She scrolled down.
A second file appeared.
A photograph.
A recent photograph.
Marcus standing beside Victor Hale.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
Behind them was another person.
A woman.
Someone whose face was partly hidden.
My mother grabbed the phone.
Her face changed.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Who is it?””
She couldn’t speak.
Ryan took the phone.
And when he saw the picture, he stepped backward.
Because the woman standing beside Victor…
The woman everyone thought disappeared years ago…
Was impossible.
My mother whispered:
“She was supposed to be dead.””
I stared at the screen.
A name appeared below the photograph.
A name connected to my father.
A name connected to every secret.
A name I had never heard before.
*Elena Carter.*
My father’s first wife.
Ryan’s biological mother.
And the woman who supposedly died before I was born.
Ryan looked at my mother.
Then at me.
His voice barely existed.
“Dad never told us she survived.””
The detective zoomed in on the photograph.
And then we saw the date.
Taken three days ago.
At the same time Daniel Cross returned.
At the same time my brakes were cut.
At the same time my life began falling apart.
My father’s first wife wasn’t dead.
May you like
She was alive.
And she had been working with the people who destroyed our family.
