Chapter 9: The Name Hidden in Emily’s Final Will

The name on the document made no sense.

I stared at it until the letters blurred.

Then I blinked.

And read it again.

*Thomas Reed.*

My brother.

My own brother.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The room around me disappeared.

The voices disappeared.

All I could see was that name.

Thomas.

The man who had stood beside me when Emily got sick.

The man who helped me paint Lily’s nursery.

The man who cried with me at the hospital.

The man who told me I was the strongest father he knew.

My brother.

The person Emily apparently trusted enough to raise my daughter.

I looked up slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa’s face told me she already knew.

Daniel looked confused.

Mason looked scared.

“Thomas?”” I whispered.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Michael…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long have you known about this?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Since before Emily died.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

I stepped back.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew Emily named my brother?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Her eyes filled.

“I tried.””

I laughed bitterly.

“When?””

“After the funeral.””

I stared at her.

“You tried to tell me after my wife died?””

She nodded.

“But you were destroyed.””

“And that gave you the right to keep it from me?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“No, it didn’t.””

I looked down at the document again.

The signature at the bottom was Emily’s.

Real.

Her handwriting.

Her decision.

But something about it felt impossible.

Because Thomas had never acted like someone who wanted my daughter.

He acted like an uncle.

A good uncle.

The kind who brought Lily birthday presents.

The kind who took her fishing.

The kind who called her “little princess.””

But now I had to question everything.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every moment I thought I understood.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Michael.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed at the document.

“Read the date.””

I looked.

The date was written at the top.

Three days before Emily died.

My heart stopped.

Three days.

Emily knew she was dying.

She made a final decision.

And she chose Thomas.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Tell me.””

She looked away.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She took a deep breath.

“Emily was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of what would happen if she wasn’t there.””

I frowned.

“That’s normal.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She wasn’t scared of dying.””

The room became silent.

“She was scared of what would happen afterward.””

I looked at the stairs.

At the room where Lily slept.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She worried about everyone fighting over Lily.””

I froze.

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became softer.

“Daniel wanted to be involved.””

I looked at him.

“He should have.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“Claire wanted control.””

Vanessa continued.

“And Emily believed you would never let anyone take Lily from you.””

“That’s right.””

“But she also knew something else.””

I waited.

“She knew you were exhausted.””

The words bothered me.

Because they sounded like criticism.

“She thought I couldn’t raise my own daughter?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She thought you would try to do everything alone.””

I said nothing.

Because maybe that part was true.

After Emily died, I worked more.

I worked because I needed money.

I worked because I didn’t know how to sit in a house full of memories.

I worked because being busy hurt less than being alone.

Vanessa continued.

“Emily believed Thomas could help you.””

I looked at the paper.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because she was afraid you would refuse.””

I felt anger rising again.

“So she made a decision behind my back?””

“She was dying, Michael.””

I stopped.

Because that was true.

Emily didn’t have endless time.

She was trying to protect Lily with the information she had.

But still…

I needed answers.

“Where is Thomas now?””

Nobody spoke.

That silence scared me.

“Where is my brother?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then said:

“He left.””

“When?””

“Six months after Emily died.””

“Why?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because he found out about Daniel.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Thomas believed Lily’s life was becoming dangerous.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because of me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because of everyone.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Claire.

I opened it.

*Now you know why Emily chose Thomas. Ask him what he did after she died.*

My stomach tightened.

I immediately called Thomas.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Voicemail.

I called again.

Nothing.

I felt something was wrong.

“Michael.””

I turned.

Mason was standing near the hallway.

His face was pale.

“Do you know where Uncle Thomas is?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“He came to our house.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Mason looked at Vanessa.

“Last year.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Mason.””

“No.””

The boy stepped forward.

“I’m tired of keeping secrets.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened when Thomas came here?””

Mason looked at me.

“He talked to Mom.””

“About what?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked toward the stairs.

“But he was angry.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Mason, stop.””

He continued.

“He said Lily was supposed to be with him.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You said he left.””

“He did.””

“Then why was he here?””

She had no answer.

Mason looked at me.

“And he said something else.””

“What?””

The boy swallowed.

“He said…”

He stopped.

Like the words were difficult.

“Say it.””

Mason looked at Vanessa.

Then me.

“He said you were the reason Emily changed her mind.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

“Then why would he say it?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked back at the document.

Emily’s final will.

Thomas’s name.

My brother’s secret.

The phone in my hand buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Claire.

It was Thomas.

A message.

Only four words.

*Stop looking, Michael. Please.*

My heart started pounding.

I replied immediately.

*Where are you?*

No response.

I called.

Straight to voicemail.

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a picture of Lily.

Not old.

Not from years ago.

Today.

She was standing outside the house with her backpack.

Someone had taken it from across the street.

Under the picture were the words:

*You still don’t understand what Emily was protecting her from.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

Then Mason.

Everyone looked afraid.

Because everyone knew something I didn’t.

I typed one final message.

*Thomas. Tell me the truth.*

The reply came instantly.

*The truth is that Lily was never in danger from strangers.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

*She was in danger from someone she trusted.*

My hands went cold.

May you like

Because the next message contained a name.

And it was the one person I never thought I would have to fear.
